Ghatkopar elevator crash: Chairman, secy booked

A day after four people were injured after a lift in a building in Ghatkopar came crashing down, the Pant Nagar police have booked its secretary and its chairman for negligence. An offence under IPC sections of 336 and 337 has been registered against the secretary and chairman of Shanti-Sagar police housing society. The injured have been identified as Rupali Gaikar (23), Sunita Ingole (28), Komal Dalvi (43) and Vinayak Dalvi (43) are recovering in Rajawadi Hospital. On Tuesday, the police recorded the statements of society office-bearers and other members. Members told cops that the building was not being maintained well. "Residents of the society have said that despite several reminders about the malfunctioning lift, the society office-bearers did not pay heed," said A Shinde, inspector of Pant Nagar police. "People have got stuck in the lift on many occasions," he added. Police plan to inspect records of the complaints made by residents and will ascertain whether or not any action was taken.The incident took place around 7.56pm when the lift at the seven-storey building. The police said that the lift's iron rope broke and it came crashing down. Hearing the sound, residents of the building rushed out and opened the lift door. "We suspect the lift gave way when it was on the second floor. We will speak to the injured to get a clearer picture," said a senior police officer.
