Review: Deva Is A Shahid Kapoor Show All The Way

Shahid Kapoor is in his element in Deva. He anchors the adroitly mounted thriller buoyed by a screenplay that, to great effect, significantly alters the plot of the film that it reworks (Mumbai Police, 2013). 

Director Rosshan Andrrews, in his first Hindi venture, adapts his own Malayalam film by not only tailoring it for the lead actor's personality -the original project was ably top-lined by Prithviraj Sukumaran -but also liberally and judiciously sprinkling a mix of masala ingredients on a good cop-bad cop whodunnit.  

Deva journeys into the mind of a scarred and smouldering Mumbai policeman, who lets his fists do most of the talking on his behalf. And, bam, the truculent cop's memory goes missing in action and all that he is left with is his reactive muscle impulses.  

His ability to let it rip when he is provoked or threatened, bail him out of tight spots even when his mind is not all there. He has enemies and detractors aplenty in the police force and outside of it. But the more cornered he appears, the more he seems to revel.     

In terms of the story that it tells - a tough policeman with the odds stacked against him, seeks a second chance in life and in a case that goes into a tailspin following a severe head injury. It combines elements from multiple action genres, ranging from the purely visceral to the psychological, from the predictably procedural to the startlingly edgy.  

So, is there anything new on offer in Deva? Yes, there is. Take a few facile narrative sleights in your stride and respond to the gritty spectacle of a cornered cop fighting his inner demons as well as the violent criminals swarming the Mumbai underworld, and you have a film that holds your attention all through its 157-minute runtime. It is not often that a movie this long does not begin to weigh heavy on the audience, once the novelty has worn off. 

Thanks to a combination of factors - the competent performances, the first-rate camerawork by cinematographer Amit Roy, the expertly calibrated editing by A. Sreekar Prasad and the lively background score by Jakes Bejoy - Deva does not lose its intensity even in the passages where the pace is allowed (as part of a larger design), to occasionally decline a tad.                   

A motorcycle crash (in the film's first sequence) leaves the titular cop with an impaired memory. The process of recovery is slow but on the advice of a neurologist he returns to the thick of the action. He lands on his feet and the act of putting the shards back together helps him jog whatever is left of his memory.    

Two halves of the story of Dev Ambre (Shahid Kapoor) - pre-amnesia and post-amnesia - bring out the reasons behind the scars, inner turmoil and the moral laxity of Dev A and Dev B. It redounds on the latter 'persona' to attempt a claw-back into the muddied high-profile case, now floundering in a haze and redeem what the man's former self has lost.    

Dev has good friends around him. His immediate boss, Farhan Khan (Pravesh Rana), is his sister's husband. The wedding offers the screenwriters a pretext to stage the film's solitary song-and-dance set piece, no matter how out of place it is. The sight of a scowling, cynical, pugnacious cop vigorously shaking a leg is hard to digest.  

Dev also banks on a valued colleague, Rohan D'Silva (Pavail Gulatie), who is a childhood pal he stands by, through thick and thin. A selfless act late in the first half serves to underscore the strength of the bonding between the two men. This moment in the plot is the pivot around which the interrupted investigation eventually revolves.      

Memory loss is an old narrative trope in popular cinema. Deva uses it as a key turning point in Dev Ambre's relationship with his job, his much-maligned department and with the people who matter to him. The final lot includes an investigative journalist Diya Sathe (Pooja Hegde), a constable's daughter. 

Diya offers to support Dev's official probe with her skills at ferreting out information about how and why a wanted Mumbai criminal manages to repeatedly give the police, the slip. But her role is largely limited to what she is in here for - to serve as the hero's romantic interest, which, too, wanes as the film nears its business end. In fact, barring the song at the wedding in which she joins in, she has to make do without a love ditty.   

Even less significant is Deepti Singh (Kubbra Sait), a member of the police posse that is charged with raiding the hideouts of criminals. Dev A thinks nothing of her but Dev B, now shorn of his prior prejudice, includes her in his operations. But this is a man's world and there is little room for a woman in uniform. Deepti tags along, offers stray information or suggestions and stays out of the limelight. 

The devilish Dev has God-like power. He has a record of flying off the handle. Whether he is taking on a mafia don-turned-politician (Girish Kulkarni in a cameo) or a bunch of gangsters working for a crime lord, his methods are impetuous. In a courtroom sequence, the film reveals that Dev has five pending cases against him. His bosses have a tough time reining him in.  

Haven't we seen many such cops before on our screens? We certainly have and yet Dev Ambre isn't always the sort of flawed man going through the motions in his quest for redemption.     

Farhan helps him with gathering the scattered jigsaw pieces, which, on the face of it, seems like a perfectly logical thing for a friend to do. But somewhere along the line, in his narration to his trusted friend, Farhan throws light on a crucial detail that he would have had no way of being privy to.  

This element sticks out because it constitutes a key plot twist. It is an encounter in which a man on the run is gunned down and on which the rest of the film - a bit of the first half and all of the second - rests.  

Mercifully, such gaps aren't the rule in Deva. The plot amendments that provide the film with a new run-up to the climax and the final denouement serve the purpose of keeping the audience guessing. So, even if you remember the Malayalam film and know how it winds up, Deva has something in store for you. 

It is a Shahid Kapoor show all the way but Deva certainly isn't only for fans of the star.

Kohli's Lunch Menu During Ranji Return Revealed: "Ordered From Local..."

Indian cricket team star batter Virat Kohli returned to domestic cricket after 12 years as Delhi face Railways in their Ranji Trophy encounter on Thursday. Kohli's Ranji return sparked massive interest among fans who attended the match in massive numbers. The fans were outside the ground from last night and Virat's every movement resulted in massive cheer from the crowd. Journalist Rohit Juglan interviewed the chef Sanjay Jha during the game and he revealed that Kohli will eat chilli paneer from the local DDCA canteen during the lunch break. "In lunchtime Virat Kohli will have chilli paneer ordered from the local DDCA canteen," his post on X (formerly Twitter) read.

The unmatched aura of Virat Kohli was on full display in and around the Arun Jaitley Stadium during the Ranji Trophy fixture between Delhi and Railways as thousands of fans queued up to watch the superstar in an unprecedented rush that forced administrators to make additional last-minute arrangements.

The DDCA (Delhi and Districts Cricket Association) had projected a crowd of around 10,000 for Kohli's homecoming, which is unheard for a Ranji Trophy game. But such was his magnetic pull that even those lofty calculations went for a toss.

Long before the start of play at 9.30am local time, the 36-year-old Kohli's loyal band of supporters were jostling to enter the stadium where entry is free for domestic matches.

At first, the DDCA opened the roughly 6,000-capacity 'Gautam Gambhir Stand' for spectators but sensing that the crowd situation could go out of hand, the officials were forced to open the 'Bishan Singh Bedi Stand' which can accommodate around 11,000 people.

"I have never seen something like this in Ranji Trophy ever. Even in my playing days, there was hardly anyone who made the effort to watch domestic cricket. It is just because of one man," a former India player present at the ground told PTI.

What added to the commotion was the movement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cavalcade past the ground at the same time.

"I have been involved in Delhi cricket for more than 30 years but I have not witnessed such scenes for a Ranji Trophy game. It just shows the Kohli's popularity is unmatched," an overwhelmed DDCA secretary Ashok Sharma told PTI.

"What made it more challenging was that fans entering the stadium coincided with the VIP movement of PM Modi on the outside roads and as part of his strict security protocol and to maintain order, we were instructed by the police to open another stand for the public," he revealed.

Trump Pauses Foreign Assistance To Pakistan, Key Projects Hit: Report

The US has temporarily suspended foreign assistance to Pakistan for re-evaluation following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, according to a media report on Tuesday.

This move has instantly stopped a number of important United States Agency For International Development (USAID) projects in Pakistan, including the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), which is the flagship programme to promote cultural heritage preservation and protection, the Geo News reported.

According to the US embassy here, the AFCP fund "helps protect historic buildings, archaeological sites, museum collections, and traditional cultural expressions like indigenous languages and crafts around the world".

Quoting an unnamed official at the US Consulate in Karachi, the report said the US has paused Pakistan's foreign assistance for re-evaluation as per the executive order issued by Trump.

Five projects related to the energy sector have also come to a halt as a result of this decision, the report said.

They are Power Sector Improvement Activity, Pakistan Private Sector Energy Activity, Energy Sector Advisory Services Project, Clean Energy Loan Portfolio Guarantee Program and Pakistan Climate Financing Activity.

Economic growth-related four projects have also been hit. Among them, Social Protection Activity was the only programme supposed to end in 2025.

The US move also hit many projects related to health, agriculture, livelihood and food security, flood, climate, and education. Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance funds are also hit by Trump's order.

Fears are being expressed that some of these programmes will be shelved forever or at least reduced significantly, according to Geo News.

However, the total value of the affected projects is not known, as it is not clear how much annual aid the US is currently pumping into Pakistan.

So far officials in Pakistan have not confirmed the development and the impact of Trump's executive measures on assistance stoppage to Pakistan.

Last week, without naming any country, Tammy Bruce, spokesman for the US Department of State, in a statement said, "Consistent with President Trump's Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid, Secretary Rubio has paused all US foreign assistance funded by or through the State Department and US Agency for International Development (USAID) for review." "As Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said, 'Every dollar we spend, every programme we fund, and every policy we pursue must be justified with the answer to three simple questions: Does it make America safer? Does it make America stronger? Does it make America more prosperous?'" he said.

Video Of "Fresh Menu" Mumbai Cloud Kitchen Shocks Users, Company Responds

An Instagram user recently visited one of the Mumbai locations of a popular cloud kitchen and was left "shocked" at its surroundings. In a now-viral video, the man (@octanexoxygen) claims that he had ordered a paneer dish from Fresh Menu but received a chicken one instead. He notes that Fresh Menu often pops up on food delivery apps like Swiggy for its low price. But he wonders what really happens in the bargain of these decreased costs. He explains that when he was in the locality of the cloud kitchen outlet (Kalina, Santacruz East), he decided to go check it out. He says he was left "shocked" at the state of the surroundings as well as a sneak peek into the pantry.

In the video, one sees that the street around the cloud kitchen is muddy, with potholes filled with dirty water. The establishment is housed in what looks to be an old run-down grey building that has no proper paint on the outside. In general, the area comes across as unkempt and unclean. The user explained that he was not allowed to film inside the pantry and he didn't want to take a video of it either. He concludes by asking viewers to "be careful." Take a look below.

The same Instagram user later uploaded a "Part 2" video in which he is seen inside the cloud kitchen, explaining the order mix-up to the staff there. He opens the food item wrapped in paper on the counter and asks them to confirm whether it is chicken or paneer. He also provides a paper bill for his order. A staff member admits that it's chicken. In the caption, the user says that they accepted the mistake but said that it happened because the staff was new and had just joined. Watch the reel here.

Fresh Menu took notice of the first viral video and issued a statement in the comments section. The company wrote, "We sincerely apologize for the unfortunate incident of delivering a non-vegetarian burger to you. Our team recognized the error during your visit to our kitchen and expressed our regret for the mix-up at our dispatch station. Please be assured that we have taken this matter very seriously. Disciplinary action has been taken against the responsible team members, and we have retrained our staff to ensure strict adherence to our processes moving forward."

Fresh Menu also addressed the concerns raised about the location of the kitchen shown in the video. "We would like to clarify that our facility follows all required food safety measures within our premises. While we have been operating from this location for the past two years, as tenants, our influence over the external environment is limited. However, we can assure you that we do not contribute negatively to the neighbourhood. We follow proper garbage and waste management practices. The water seen on the street originates from water tankers that service businesses and residential buildings in the morning hours and is not sewage. The lane is shared with nearly 25 other businesses and shops. Taking your feedback into account, we will actively collaborate with other businesses to improve the overall upkeep of the area. We value your feedback and deeply regret any inconvenience caused. Your concerns are important to us, and we are committed to ensuring a better experience in the future," the company stated.

Opinion: As India-China Grow Close, Who's Driving The 'Narrative'?

India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, was recently in China on a two-day trip to discuss the future course of bilateral relations between the two countries, following an initiative by both nations to normalise ties after a military standoff spanning nearly four years.

A Host Of Measures

Relations between the two nations were fraught after Beijing unilaterally tried to change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in 2020, which resulted in the deaths of soldiers on both sides. As a response to China's military coercion and amassing troops along the border, New Delhi responded by adopting a stringent position, that peace and tranquillity along the boundary would decide the overall relationship. This approach necessitated viewing trade, technology, and civil society interactions from a national security lens.

Consequently, nearly 300 Chinese mobile applications were banned, direct flights between India and China were halted, strict curbs were imposed on visas for Chinese nationals, and educational cooperation between universities was reviewed. In October 2024, both nations finalised patrolling arrangements for friction points in Eastern Ladakh, following which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the BRICS summit in Russia. This resumption of top-level engagement has been followed by regular meetings down the hierarchy to chart the future direction.

Focus On Trade, Economy, And People

With disengagement having been completed and the resumption of patrolling as per the respective perceptions of the border, the focus has shifted to aspects like economic engagement and people-to-people ties, which had been in a deep freeze.

The restarting of the Special Representatives (SRs) mechanism, which was tasked with ways to settle the boundary question from a political perspective under an agreement in 2003, is a welcome move. Besides, the Indian readout of Misri's trip states that the pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet will resume this year. The meeting of the expert panel to confer on the resumption of sharing of hydrological data and cooperation on transnational rivers has been advanced. Interactions between media outlets and think tanks are set to resume. The pathway to restart direct air services between the two countries is also being cleared. There is also an impetus to address issues related to the economy and trade.

Not All Is Well

However, several challenges remain and overshadow the relationship.

First, while disengagement has been completed, the weaponry assembled along the border during the standoff remains in place. This raises the possibility that the disengagement has been a tactical move for the Chinese. Ahead of the Indian Army Day, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi cautioned that while the conditions in Eastern Ladakh were stable but sensitive, both armies were locked in a “degree of standoff”.

Second, in earlier rounds in 2022, disengagement was achieved at some points after creating no-patrol zones. While that was supposed to be a temporary measure, there is no clarity on how long these no-go areas for both militaries will continue.

Lastly, while military tensions are down, the strategy of cartographic warfare and weaponising of natural resources continues. Beijing recently announced plans to carve out two counties, which subsume a part of the territory of Ladakh, in Xinjiang province's Hotan prefecture. It is also constructing the world's biggest hydroelectric project on the Yarlung Zangbo river in Tibet (referred to as Brahmaputra after it enters Arunachal Pradesh). New Delhi has conveyed its concerns to Beijing on both these developments through diplomatic channels. 

Narrative Games

This brings us to the issue of trust and peace. Going further, China's use of non-conventional means to gain leverage over India is likely to queer the pitch in the pursuit of a settlement. New Delhi needs to pay close attention to the narratives emanating from Beijing's strategic class. Their notion is that India is conciliating with China from a position of vulnerability. Second, they believe that India's relenting in imposing restrictions on Chinese corporations was hurting the Indian economy more. This sentiment has been buttressed ever since the Finance Ministry's Economic Survey 2023-24 made a case for inviting Chinese capital and integrating into Chinese-led international value chains. Lastly, there are assumptions in Beijing that there is a degree of strategic mistrust between the US and India in light of recent standoffs over the Pannun and Nijjar cases, and that this could force New Delhi to look towards China. 

While Xi's bid to redraw boundaries may have failed, China is unlikely to stop poking around on sensitive issues through all such non-conventional means, and this can test New Delhi's cautious normalisation.

Ex-India Star Highlights Concerning Stat On Samson: "Extremely Ordinary..."

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has revealed a concerning stat surrounding wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson's batting against express pace bowling. He pointed out how Samson's performances have been bang average against pacy, especually short-pitched, balls. Samson was dismissed by England pacer Jofra Archer in the first two T20Is of the ongoing five-match series. While highlighting his mode of dismissals, Chopra suggested that Samson has not only struggled to score runs he has also failed to preserve his wicket while facing express pace.

"Abhishek Sharma got out. He scored runs in the last match. So we won't talk a lot about him. Our stats team came out with a stat on how Sanju Samson has performed when the ball's speed is more than 140 kph. His performance has been extremely ordinary. He hasn't scored runs and has lost his wicket as well," Chopra said his YouTube channel.

Chopra also reckoned that Samson's struggles against express pace become an area of concern for the batter.

"His strike rate is very low. He is going deep inside the crease and going a little towards square leg. The bowlers are bowling bouncers and laying a trap by keeping a fielder in the deep. He has been caught in the deep twice in two matches. It is just a talking point right now," he added.

"He has scored three centuries if we see the five matches before this series. The story of centuries and ducks was ongoing, which is okay, but if this is his response to serious pace bowling, if you remove that 22-run over of Gus Atkinson (in the first T20I) since you want to improve, you will realize he hasn't scored too many runs, and he is having problems against pace and bouncers," Chopra elaborated.

Samson has registered scores of 26 and five in the first two T20Is. The third T20I will be played on January 28 in Rajkot, with India leading 2-0 in the series.

Arvind Kejriwal Questions Gujarat Police Deployment In Delhi. Cops Clarify

Shortly after former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed the Election Commission has removed Punjab Police and deployed Gujarat Police in the National Capital Territory, top sources in Delhi Police have provided a clarification.

The sources said 220 companies of security personnel were received in Delhi, including those from the CRPF, BSF, SSB, ITBP, CISF and RPF. Further, 70 companies were also deployed from Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh Police. These companies were received in Delhi in three phases, which included the deployment of seven to eight companies of Gujarat Police.

Sources clarified that the deployment came after 250 companies were demanded to maintain law and order as the February 5 Assembly polls near. These companies will conduct tasks like flying squads, interstate border checking, area domination, and security at critical polling stations. Further, they will also serve at counting centres and as quick response teams.

A response was awaited from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh Police, with farmers' protest ongoing in the first two states, while the Maha Kumbh is ongoing in Prayagraj, the sources said.

Mr Kejriwal raised questions on the deployment of eight companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) from Gujarat. The SRPF companies reached Delhi on January 13 as per the order of the Election Commission (EC), Commandant SRPF, Bhachau, Tejas Patel said on Saturday.

Punjab's Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the state police component deployed for Kejriwal's security was withdrawn following directions from the Delhi Police and the Election Commission.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, meanwhile, hit back at Kejriwal over his lack of awareness regarding the poll body's norms. "Now I understand why people call you a fraud. Kejriwal ji, as a former Chief Minister, I'm surprised you're not aware of the Election Commission's norms," Sanghavi stated in his post.

"They've requested forces from various states, not just Gujarat. In fact, the Election Commission of India has ordered SRP deployment from various states, a routine procedure. As per their request, 8 companies of SRP from Gujarat were sent to Delhi for the scheduled election on 11/1/25. Why the selective mention of Gujarat, Kejriwal ji?" he added.

Polling for all 70 assembly seats in Delhi will be held on February 5 and the votes will be counted on February 8.

Box Office: Akshay Kumar's Sky Force Shows No Signs Of Slowing Down

Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya's aerial action thriller Sky Force experienced a 75% surge in earnings on Saturday, following a solid opening day at the box office.

As reported by Sacnilk, the film saw a 75.51% increase in earnings, raking in Rs 21.5 crore on Saturday alone. This brings its total earnings to Rs 33.75 crore after two days of release. 

Sky Force has come as a much-needed relief for Akshay, marking his most successful movie release in years. The film opened to solid double-digit collections. 

According to Sacnilk, Sky Force earned Rs 11.25 crore (net) on its opening day. The movie was made on a relatively modest budget of Rs 160 crore.

The last big hit in Akshay Kumar's career was Sooryavanshi (2021), directed by Rohit Shetty. It was made on a budget of Rs 160 crore and earned Rs 293 crore globally.

His last few releases, including Khel Khel Mein, Sarfira, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Mission Raniganj, Selfiee, Ram Setu, Raksha Bandhan, Samrat Prithviraj, and Bachchhan Paandey, all failed to make a mark at the box office.

Akshay's last major release, Singham Again, raked in Rs 372.4 crore globally, but that movie was led by Ajay Devgn and featured an ensemble cast, with Akshay appearing in a cameo. Additionally, he made a guest appearance in Stree 2, which performed well, earning Rs 857.15 crore worldwide.

Since the film's trailer launch, Sky Force has drawn comparisons to Fighter, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. Fighter was also released around Republic Day last year and made Rs 22.5 crore on its opening day. Fighter, with a production budget of Rs 250 crore, went on to become a success, grossing Rs 358.83 crore worldwide. 

Sky Force is based on the untold story of India's first and deadliest airstrike, showcasing the events of the 1965 India-Pakistan War.

Veer Pahariya makes his acting debut as IAF officer T Vijaya, who goes missing in action during the war, while Akshay Kumar plays his fellow officer, KO Ahuja, who embarks on a mission to find him. 

The film also features Nimrat Kaur and Sara Ali Khan in important roles. Sky Force is directed by Sandeep Kelwani and Abhishek Kapur.

Rohit Captains ICC Men's T20I Team Of The Year, 4 Indians Make The Cut

Rohit Sharma was elected as the captain of the ICC T20I Team of the Year for 2024, after leading India to a second T20 World Cup title in the year. Despite poor form in Test cricket, Rohit won his first piece of ICC silverware as India captain, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament as well. Three other Indians featured in the ICC XI, in the form of pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Tournament of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Travis Head was selected to open alongside Rohit Sharma, while Phil Salt was also included in the XI, as the No. 3 batter.

Head amassed 255 runs in seven games at the T20 World Cup, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer. The Australian had a superb 2024, and also made his mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Phil Salt hit three T20I centuries in 2024, and found a spot in the ICC XI.

Nicholas Pooran was the highest run-scorer across T20s in 2024, amassing over 2,000 runs, and was chosen as the wicket-keeper in the XI. Pakistan stalwart Babar Azam also found a spot, having scored 738 runs in 23 innings, despite not having the best T20 World Cup.

Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza, India's Hardik Pandya and Afghanistan's Rashid Khan were selected as the all-rounders in the team. Pandya was arguably the best all-rounder in the T20 World Cup, while Rashid led Afghanistan to a historic first semi-final.

Bumrah had a phenomenal T20 World Cup 2024, picking up 15 wickets, while Arshdeep was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 17. The latter picked up 36 wickets in 18 games in 2024.

Alongside Rashid Khan, Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga was selected as the other spinner in the ICC T20I Team of the Year.

Samson's Father Drops New Bombshell, Reveals Dravid's 'Jealous' Remark

Sanju Samson has been dominating headlines recently due to his ongoing feud with the Kerala Cricket Association. Following his Champions Trophy 2025 snub, the KCA said that he was not included in the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad after he skipped a preparatory camp and even asked him of 'lacking discipline'. Samson's father, Viswanath, has accused KCA of trying to end his son's career and recalled how Rahul Dravid played a key role in not letting that happen. Viswanath revealed that when Samson was 11 years old, Dravid intervened and even asked that people were jealous of him.

"I will tell you one incident about Rahul Dravid. When KCA had tried to disregard Sanju and destroy his career, Dravid ji had interfered in the matter. Wherever Sanju is at today, he owes it to Rahul Dravid. I have not forgotten anyone who has given us warmth and generosity. When action was being taken against Samson, they had given up his kit and everything else. Then, one day, we were all sad and sitting at home when Sanju got a call from Rahul sir. Sanju was overjoyed. He picked up the phone crying. The mood in the house was sombre," Samson Viswanath said on Sports Today.

"After keeping down the phone, he told me 'it was Rahul sir'. He said 'Sanju, I understand all that is happening with you. They are all jealous of you. Tu chinta mat kar (Don't worry). Don't get your morale down. I have taken care of it. You keep training and get ready for NCA'. He operated at a level higher than the KCA and took Sanju under his wings," he added.

In the first match of the ongoing T20I series, India won the toss and elected to field. England lost wickets at regular intervals, with only skipper Jos Buttler (68 off 44 balls, with eight fours and two sixes) putting up a fight for the Three Lions. England was restricted to 132 in 20 overs.

Chakravarthy (3/23) was the top wicket-taker for India, while Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel each took two wickets.

In the run-chase, Sanju Samson (26 off 20 balls, with four boundaries and a six) put on a 41-run stand with Abhishek Sharma (79 off 34 balls, with five fours and eight sixes), who single-handedly led India to victory with seven wickets and 43 balls to spare.

$5,000 To Join Facebook, Instagram: How Meta Is Wooing TikTokers in US

With the shadow of a tumultuous ban still looming over TikTok in the United States, billionaire Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is offering to pay a large sum of money to popular content creators on the "third party" social media app who join Facebook and Instagram. The company said select creators will get up to a $5,000 bonus if they post content on Meta platforms for over three months.

On its website, Meta said the influences who get accepted into the so-called "Breakthrough bonus programme" will be paid the money during their first 90 days on the app, so long as they post regularly. They will get the cash based on "an evaluation of your social presence.

By sharing content across Meta's platforms, creators will also get access to Facebook's content monetization program that enables users to earn additional income from their posts. In addition to the bonuses, Meta is also offering these popular faces a free trial of Meta Verified-- the sought-after blue checkmark that provides exclusive features and helps accounts stand out. Normally, this feature comes at a monthly cost ranging from $15 to $120. 

Meta Going After TikTokers?

Though Meta did not say the tempting cash offer was exclusively for TikTokers, it came just days after the rival platform was removed from US app stores. Though President Donald Trump delayed the short video app's departure from the US market by 75 days, TikTok still remains unavailable to download from app stores.

The timing of Meta's offer suggests it is attempting to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding the ByteDance-owned platform's users.

According to TikTok, it has 170 million users in the US - many of whose livelihood depends on its survival. This means a lot of people would be looking for an alternative platform to establish themselves if the Chinese company disappeared.

This is not Meta's first move to go after ByteDance's users. Earlier on Sunday, the firm announced an app called "Edits" which shared striking similarities with ByteDance's CapCut-- a video editing app which went offline when the ByteDance ban took effect on January 19.

Meta has also launched a "new affiliate link experience" for users' "shoppable content"-- a system where Meta users will be able to add prominent affiliate links directly on their videos - rather than in the comments - just like how it works on TikTok.

But, perhaps the most visible influence of TikTok is seen in how Instagram looks. After the new update, posts and videos on Instagram are now appearing rectangular, like on TikTok.

22 US States Sue Trump Over Birthright Citizenship Order. Can They Stop Him?

US President Donald Trump has been sued by a coalition of Democratic-leaning states and civil rights groups over his plan to end birthright citizenship in the United States. Several separate lawsuits came within hours after Trump took office and quickly unveiled a phalanx of executive orders he hopes will reshape American immigration.

The first two cases were filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, immigrant organizations and an expectant mother in the hours after Trump signed the executive order, kicking off the first major court fight of his administration.

The two other lawsuits were brought by 22 Democratic-led states along with the District of Columbia and the city of San Francisco, in federal courts in Boston and Seattle. The cases asserted that the President had overstepped his authority and violated the US Constitution by trying to eliminate the automatic granting of citizenship to anyone born on US soil.

If allowed to stand, Trump's order would for the first time deny more than 150,000 children born annually in the United States the right to citizenship, said the office of Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell.

"President Trump does not have the authority to take away constitutional rights," she said in a statement.

What Is Birthright Citizenship?

Anyone born in the United States is considered a citizen at birth, which derives from the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment which was added to the US Constitution in 1868. 

The amendment states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 also defines citizens and includes similar language.

The 14th Amendment was confirmed in the US Constitution in 1868, after the four years of the American Civil War, to overturn the Supreme Court decision Dred Scott v. Sandford, which denied basic rights to African Americans. The previous judgement said that enslaved people were not US citizens and, therefore, could not expect any protection from the federal government or the courts.

The US Supreme Court affirmed that birthright citizenship applies to the children of immigrants in 1898 in the Wong Kim Ark v United States ruling. Wong, who was born to Chinese immigrants in the US, was denied re-entry when he returned to the US from a visit to China. Wong successfully argued that because he was born in the US, his parents' immigration status did not affect the application of the 14th Amendment in his case.

The case affirmed that regardless of race or the immigration status of one's parents, all children born in the United States were entitled to all of the rights that citizenship offered. 

However, the Supreme Court has not addressed whether the Citizenship Clause applies to US-born children of people who are in the United States illegally.

What Does Trump's Executive Order Say?

Donald Trump's order declared that individuals born in the United States are not entitled to automatic citizenship if the mother was in the country unlawfully and the father was not a citizen or lawful permanent resident. It also declared citizenship would be denied to those whose mother was in the United States lawfully but temporarily, such as those on student or tourist visas, and whose father was not a citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Trump has complained about foreign women visiting the United States for the purpose of giving birth and conferring US citizenship on their offspring.

There were an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in America in January 2022, according to a US Department of Homeland Security estimate, a figure that some analysts now place at 13 million to 14 million. Their US-born children are considered by the government to have US citizenship. 

Losing out on citizenship would prevent these individuals from having access to federal programs like Medicaid health insurance and, when they become older, from working lawfully or voting, the states said in the lawsuits.

Can Trump's Order Overturn Birthright Citizenship?

According to legal experts, birthright citizenship can not be ended by an executive order as it is bound to end up in litigation. 

"He's doing something that's going to upset a lot of people, but ultimately this will be decided by the courts...This is not something he can decide on his own," Saikrishna Prakash, a constitutional expert and University of Virginia Law School professor said, according to a report by BBC. 

Mr Prakash noted that while Trump can order employees of federal agencies to interpret citizenship more narrowly, it would trigger legal challenges from anyone whose citizenship is denied. This could lead to a lengthy court battle ultimately winding up at the US Supreme Court.

A constitutional amendment could do away with birthright citizenship, but that would also require a two-thirds vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate and approval by three-quarters of US states. Republicans have a 53 to 47 majority in the Senate and a 220 to 215 majority in the House, meaning America's grand old party (GOP) does not have the required number in either chamber.

Cases Against Trump's Order

Three of the four lawsuits against Trump's order were filed in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Any rulings from judges in those New England states would be reviewed by the Boston-based 1st US Circuit Court of Appeals, the only federal appeals court whose active judges are all Democratic appointees, according to a report by Reuters. 

Four states filed a separate case in Washington state, which the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals has jurisdiction over. US District Judge John Coughenour in Seattle has scheduled a Thursday hearing on whether he should issue a temporary restraining order blocking enforcement of Trump's order.

A fifth lawsuit was filed in federal court in Maryland by a group of pregnant women and immigrant rights groups including CASA.

The various lawsuits argue that Trump's executive order violated the right enshrined in the Citizenship Clause of the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment which provides that anyone born in the United States is considered a citizen.

The complaints cite the US Supreme Court's 1898 ruling in United States v. Wong Kim Ark, a decision holding that children born in the United States to non-citizen parents are entitled to U.S. citizenship. The plaintiffs challenging the order include a woman living in Massachusetts identified only as "O. Doe" who is in the country through temporary protected status and is due to give birth in March.

Temporary protected status is available to people whose home countries have experienced natural disasters, armed conflicts or other extraordinary events and currently covers more than 1 million people from 17 nations.

Several other lawsuits challenging aspects of Trump's other early executive actions are also pending.

The National Treasury Employees Union, which represents federal government employees in 37 agencies and departments, late on Monday filed a lawsuit challenging an order Trump signed that makes it easier to fire thousands of federal agency employees and replace them with political loyalists.

"Jeet's marriage is on 7th February. Our activities are like common people. His marriage will be very simple and with fully traditional ways," Mr Adani said to a question asked by the media about his son's marriage.

Mr Adani was asked whether Jeet Adani's wedding would be a "Maha Kumbh of celebrities", to which he said, "Bilkul nahi hoga" (No, it won't be). 

Jeet Adani joined the Adani Group in 2019, after attending the University of Pennsylvania - School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. He started his career in the Group CFO's office, looking at Strategic Finance, Capital Markets and Risk & Governance Policy. He is currently spearheading the Adani Airports business as well as the Adani Digital Labs.

Today, Gautam Adani, his wife, Priti Adani, who is the Chairperson of the Adani Foundation, and son, Karan Adani, the Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ Limited (APSEZ), offered prayers at Triveni Sangam. At this point, the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers meet.

Mr Adani also visited the camp of the ISKCON temple at the fair and helped cook Mahaprasad (sacred meals).

The Adani Group and ISKCON or the International Society for Krishna Consciousness have joined hands to serve meals to devotees at the Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13.

The Mahaprasad will be offered for the entire duration of the fair, scheduled to end on February 26.

How Trump's Day 1 Order To End Birthright Citizenship Will Impact Indians

Donald Trump's first day as the 47th President of the United States was marked by a significant move to reshape the country's immigration landscape. He signed an executive order that targets multiple immigration laws, including the long-standing principle of birthright citizenship. This move has sparked intense debate and is expected to face formidable legal challenges.

At the heart of the controversy is the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which grants citizenship to all individuals born in the United States. The 14th Amendment states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside."

However, Trump's executive order seeks to reinterpret this amendment, asserting that children born to undocumented parents are not entitled to automatic citizenship. This drastic shift in policy is expected to impact millions of Indian-Americans residing in the US, many of whom have been awaiting green cards for years or even decades.

The Trump administration has deemed birthright citizenship as "ridiculous" and claims that ending it will curb illegal immigration. "The 14th Amendment has never been interpreted to extend citizenship universally to everyone born within the United States," Trump delineated in the order.

The change in the policy is set to go into effect 30 days after the order issuance, a move set to ignite legal challenges.

One of the most significant effects of this policy will be on Indian families who have been using birth tourism as a means to obtain US citizenship for their children. Birth tourism, which involves traveling to the US to give birth, has been a popular route for Mexican and Indian families. However, Trump's new policy is expected to put an end to this practice altogether.

According to the US Census Bureau, about 5 million Indian Americans are currently residing in the US, making up about 1.47 per cent of the population. Of these, only 34 per cent are US born while the rest of the two-thirds are immigrants.

Majority of the Indian nationals that are currently working in the US are on the H1-B visa, with that, hundreds of Indian-origin children being born on the US soil will not be granted automatic citizenship according to President Trump's executive order.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has expressed concerns about the constitutionality of Trump's executive order, citing the 14th Amendment's clear language on birthright citizenship. The ACLU has also highlighted the potential for mass deportations, family separations, and other human rights abuses under Trump's immigration policies.

Per a press release, the ACLU also stated, "Immigrants' rights advocates today sued the Trump administration over its executive order that seeks to strip certain babies born in the United States of their U.S. citizenship."

As the battle over birthright citizenship and immigration reform intensifies, the future of millions of families remains uncertain. Legal challenges are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of this controversial policy. Ultimately, the outcome will depend on the ability of advocates, lawmakers, and the courts to protect the rights of vulnerable communities and uphold the principles of justice and equality enshrined in the US Constitution.

New Regime Or Old Regime - Which Income Tax Slab Works Best For You?

The income tax system in India operates through a progressive slab structure. The amount of tax an individual pays is directly proportional to their income in a financial year. The system is designed to ensure fairness, where higher earnings are taxed at a higher rate.

The income tax slabs are periodically revised, usually as part of the Union Budget announcements. During the Budget 2024, a few changes were introduced to the tax slabs under the new tax regime, alongside some adjustments to exemptions and deductions.

The new tax regime offers lower tax rates without any deductions. On the other hand, the old tax regime provides several deductions under various Sections of the Income Tax Act, 1961, though the tax rates are higher.

New tax regime slabs (for taxpayers below 60 years of age)

For taxpayers under the new tax regime, the following income tax slabs apply:

  • Up to Rs 3 lakh: No tax.
  • Rs 3 lakh to Rs 7 lakh: 5 per cent
  • Rs 7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh: 10 per cent
  • Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12 lakh: 15 per cent
  • Rs 12 lakh to Rs 15 lakh: 20 per cent
  • Above Rs 15 lakh: 30 per cent

Old tax regime slabs

Under the old tax regime, which still remains available for taxpayers, the income tax slabs are as follows:

  • Up to Rs 2.5 lakh: No tax is applicable.
  • Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh: 5 per cent 
  • Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh: 20 per cent 
  • Rs 10 lakh and above: 30 per cent

The standard deduction for salaried taxpayers has been increased to Rs 75,000 under the new regime. It remains at flat Rs 50,000 under the old tax regime.  

Choosing between the old and new tax regimes

When deciding between the old and new tax regimes, assess both and choose the one suited best as per your earnings and investments.

Old regime: The old tax system allows for various exemptions and deductions, such as those under Section 80C for investments and Section 80D for insurance premiums. Additionally, individuals can benefit from savings-focused provisions like deductions on home loan interests and HRA (House Rent Allowance). The old regime could be beneficial for those with significant deductions.

New regime: The new tax regime simplifies the tax process by offering lower rates but does not provide the same range of exemptions and deductions. It may suit those with fewer investments or those who prefer simpler tax filing, as it eliminates the need for tax-saving investments. 

How to calculate your tax

To calculate your tax liability under either regime, you must first determine your taxable income:

Old regime: Start with your total income, calculate the applicable deductions (such as 80C, 80D, and others), and apply the relevant tax slabs to the net taxable income.

New regime: You will calculate tax based on your total income, as no deductions are allowed in this regime. Your tax liability is directly calculated according to the tax slabs mentioned earlier.

Inform your employer

One of the most important things to do is to inform your employer about the tax regime you choose, as this will impact the TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) from your salary. Your employer will calculate the tax based on the regime you select, ensuring your taxes are deducted appropriately.

Opinion: Does The BJP Need Congress's Help In Delhi?

The Battle of Delhi is intensifying, with Rahul Gandhi joining the election campaign. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has received approval from the Home Ministry to prosecute Arvind Kejriwal in the alleged liquor scam. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its second list of candidates, and as the deadline for nominations approaches, candidates from all parties are filing their papers.

For the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), it's a fight for survival; for the BJP, it's about prestige, and for the Congress, it's about relevance. Will the AAP score a hat trick, or will a rejuvenated Congress spoil its chances? Can the BJP make a comeback after a gap of almost 27 years?

The AAP and the Congress have been engaged in a war of words in Delhi since contesting as allies in the June 2024 Lok Sabha polls. While Ajay Maken called Kejriwal “anti-national”, Sandeep Dikshit has been fielded against the former chief minister from the New Delhi seat. Dikshit has ramped up his attacks on the AAP in a bid to recover lost ground. In response, the AAP has called for the Congress's removal from the INDIA bloc.

'Jugalbandi' 

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi attacked Arvind Kejriwal, claiming that Kejriwal's campaigning style mirrored that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He accused the AAP of making false promises and blamed it for rising pollution and inflation. Kejriwal quickly responded, accusing Gandhi of abusing him. He claimed that both the BJP and the Congress were working in tandem and that the elections would expose their “jugalbandi" (duet).

The AAP has grown at the expense of Congress and other parties, particularly among Purvanchalis, the poor and lower socio-economic classes, minorities, and Dalits. Therefore, any gain for the Congress in the vote share is likely to come at the AAP's expense. In the 2008 assembly elections, the Congress recorded a 40% vote share, with the BJP, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Others getting 36%,14%, and 10% votes, respectively. In the next state elections in 2015, the AAP secured 54% votes and the BJP got 32%, while the Congress and Others got 10% and 4% votes, respectively. In 2020, the Congress's vote share further declined to 4%. Almost the entire vote chunk of the Congress and Others has been absorbed by AAP in assembly elections.

Overlapping Vote Bases

Meanwhile, whenever the Congress has improved its vote share in local body or general elections, it has been at the expense of the AAP. For example, in the 2017 MCD elections, the AAP couldn't win as the Congress recorded a 21% vote share—an 11 percentage point (pp) gain compared to the 2015 assembly polls. Similarly, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the AAP lost 36% of its vote share as the Congress saw a 13 pp gain and the BJP 25 pp, compared to the 2015 assembly elections. These AAP voters who shifted to the BJP may have been motivated by a preference for Arvind Kejriwal in the assembly and Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha. Similarly, the AAP voters who shifted to the Congress may have been anti-BJP voters, backing Kejriwal in the assembly and Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, as both were seen as better positioned to defeat the BJP in their respective elections.

In the 2020 Delhi assembly elections, the AAP secured 54% of the vote share, the BJP got 39%, the Congress 4%, and Others 3%. Both the Congress and the BJP lost around 18% of their votes compared to the 2019 general elections.

In the 2022 MCD elections, the AAP lost 12% of its vote share as the Congress gained 8%, compared to the 2020 assembly elections. The AAP won the close contest with 134 out of 250 seats, just eight more than the simple majority of 126. This was an election the AAP was expected to win comfortably as the BJP was battling a 15-year anti-incumbency.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP bagged 54% votes, the AAP 24%, the Congress 18%, and Others 4%, with the AAP and the Congress contesting as allies. According to trends from the past two election cycles (2014-15 and 2019-20), a section of voters swing between AAP-BJP and AAP-Congress from one election to the next.

Will Swing Voters Swing Again?

The AAP holds a 15% lead over the BJP in assembly elections, a significant margin that is difficult to overcome. Meanwhile, the Congress has 10 to 15% of AAP's swing voters, who Kejriwal hopes will shift back to the AAP in the 2025 state elections. In the 2024 general election, the Congress secured 20% of Dalit and 34% of Muslim support, according to CSDS post-poll data, translating to an 8% vote share from these two communities. The BJP needs the Congress to retain some of these votes.

The AAP's 15% lead in 2020 can be broken down as follows: 3% votes from Hindus, 2% from Sikhs, and 10% from Muslims. The BJP led among upper castes and upper OBCs by 10%, while the AAP led among Dalits by 30%, Sikhs by 40%, and Muslims by 80%. The AAP's significant lead among Dalits and minorities gives it a real advantage over the BJP. In 2020, Congress received 13% of the Muslim vote and 4% of the Sikh vote, according to CSDS post-poll data.

A Sticky Situation For Congress

The BJP hopes the Congress can regain some of its appeal among minority voters, who may feel uneasy with the AAP's soft Hindutva approach. If the Congress were to gain 15% more support from Muslims, Dalits, and Sikhs compared to 2020, it could reduce the AAP's vote share by around 5%, given that these communities make up 35% of the population.

If the BJP also manages to capture 5% of AAP's vote share due to anti-incumbency and middle-class disillusionment with the AAP—partly due to corruption allegations against Kejriwal and his top ministers—then the AAP could lose as much as 10% of its vote share. In the event of this 10% swing, the BJP could win 39 seats, while the AAP could secure 31 seats, based on the 2020 performance.

This election is unique in that the BJP is hoping for the Congress to perform well. The better the Congress does, the worse the AAP will fare in terms of vote share, given the complementary nature of their voter bases. This creates a dilemma for the Congress: campaigning aggressively would harm AAP and help the BJP.

Gaza Ceasefire: List Of 33 Israeli Hostages To Be Freed In First Phase

The Palestine-based Hamas has released the names of three Israeli women hostages to be freed on Sunday as part of a ceasefire deal which has still not come into effect. The implementation of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was delayed on Sunday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked, an hour before the 06:30 am GMT deadline, that Hamas provide the names of three hostages it was to release on Sunday as part of the agreement.

"As part of the... prisoner swap deal, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, decided to release the following Israeli prisoners today," Hamas's armed wing said in a statement, giving the names of the women.

Once the truce deal is implemented, it will halt one of the Middle East's most devastating conflicts in years. Earlier in the day, the Israeli government also released the list of 33 hostages that Hamas will release in the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire.

Those on the list are likely to be handed over by Hamas fighters to Israeli troops over a period of 42 days. The hostages include women, children, elderly individuals and the infirm.

The schedule for the release will be such that three hostages will be returned on the first day after the deal is implemented, followed by four more returned on the seventh day.

Subsequently, for a period of the next four weeks, three hostages will be returned every week. The remaining 14 hostages will be released in the final, sixth week of phase one, according to a report by The Times of Israel.

Israel's list included the names of Kfir Bibas, who was taken alongside his now four-year-old brother Ariel and his mother and father, Shiri and Yarden. Kfir, who was abducted when he was just 9 months old, became a symbol of the suffering of the hostages.

Top 10 Executive Orders Trump Plans To Carry Out On Day 1 Of His Presidency

On the first day of his first term, President-elect Donald Trump had signed just one executive order, which targeted Obamacare. But this time around, he has promised quite a few orders. Here are a few of them.

Mass deportation program

Trump's immigration plans are a key aspect of his day-one agenda. He has vowed to begin a mass deportation program, targeting undocumented migrants. "On day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out," Trump said during a rally in New York City. This promise has raised concerns among immigration advocates, who argue that such a program would be logistically challenging and potentially harmful.

End birthright citizenship

Trump has also promised to end birthright citizenship, a right granted to anyone born in the United States under the 14th Amendment. This move would likely face significant legal and logistical challenges. When asked if he plans to end birthright citizenship on day one, Trump replied, "Absolutely." Additionally, Trump has vowed to terminate every open-borders policy of the Biden administration, he has even said that he will "use Title 42", a public health law that allows for faster deportation of migrants.

Pardon Capitol Hill rioters

On the issue of pardons, Trump has promised to pardon defendants convicted for their role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. "I'm looking first day," Trump said when asked about his timeline for pardons. He has also stated that he would consider pardoning defendants charged with violent crimes, saying, "We're looking at it." This move has sparked controversy, with many arguing that pardoning those involved in the January 6 attack would undermine the rule of law. Furthermore, he told Time magazine, "I'll be looking at J6 early on, maybe the first nine minutes."

Ending the Russia-Ukraine War

In terms of foreign policy, Trump has made the bold claim that he can end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, or even before. "That is a war that's dying to be settled. I will get it settled before I even become president," Trump said during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. "I know [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy very well, and I know [Russian President Vladimir] Putin very well. I have a good relationship and they respect your president, OK, they respect me. They don't respect Biden," Trump added.

Tariff implementation

Trump has also promised to implement tariffs on products imported from Mexico and Canada, two of America's biggest trading partners. This move has raised concerns among economists, who argue that such tariffs could have drastic and harmful effects on the US economy.

"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Nov. 25. He even referred to the word tariff as "the most beautiful word in the entire dictionary of words."

End Biden's 'electric vehicle mandate'

On economic issues, Trump has vowed to cancel the electric vehicle "mandate" implemented by the Biden administration. "The day I take office, I will cancel Crooked Joe's electric vehicle mandate," Trump said during a campaign event in Houston.

The mandate Trump has been speaking about is an order Biden signed setting a national goal aiming for 50% of new cars and trucks sold by 2030 to be zero-emission. In March, the Environmental Protection Agency finalised the tailpipe emission limits and electric vehicles were expected to help reach the goals. Trump has referred to this as "electric vehicle mandates", although no one is required to buy a certain type of car.

Drill, drill, drill

He has also promised to increase oil drilling in the United States, saying, "Drill, drill, drill" during a town hall interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. According to Trump, increasing oil production in the US would drastically reduce energy costs.

This move has sparked concerns among environmental groups, who argue that increased oil drilling would exacerbate climate change.

Ban transgender athletes from women's sports

Trump's stance on transgender rights has been a topic of controversy. He has repeatedly referred to transgender women as men and has promised to limit participation in women's sports by transgender women, saying, "I will keep men out of women's sports, 100%, immediately, first day."

End gender-affirming care practices

Trump has also vowed to end gender-affirming care practices, which can include hormone therapy. "On day one, I will revoke Joe Biden's cruel policies on so-called 'gender affirming care,'" Trump said in a video posted to his campaign website. This move has sparked outrage among LGBTQ+ advocates, who argue that such policies would be discriminatory and harmful.

Made-in-America auto industry

Furthermore, Trump has promised to revitalise the American auto industry, saying that "a vote for President Trump means the future of the automobile will be made in America." He has also vowed to promote American energy, sourced by American suppliers, and built by American labourers. This move has sparked enthusiasm among some in the auto industry, who see Trump's promises as a potential boon for American manufacturing.

As Trump prepares to take office, its not yet certain which of these promises he will prioritise and how he will implement them. One thing is certain, however: Trump's day-one agenda is ambitious and far-reaching, with the potential to shape the course of his presidency and the future of the United States.

Urvashi Trolled For Showing Off Watch While Talking About Saif Attack

Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his upscale Bandra residence in the wee hours of Thursday. After the worrying incident, several celebrities raised their concerns over the safety of Mumbaikars. Urvashi Rautela also spoke on the matter, but her remarks did not sit well with the internet users. 

Amid expressing concern over the law and order in Mumbai, Urvashi Rautela flaunted her expensive diamond-studded watch, ring and watch and spoke about her latest film Daaku Maharaaj's box office collection. The actress claimed that Saif's stabbing incident has made her "insecure" about wearing expensive jewellery in public. 

In a conversation with ANI, Urvashi Rautela said, "It is very unfortunate. Now Daaku Maharaaj has crossed Rs 105 crore at the box office and my mother gifted me this diamond-studded Rolex, while my father gifted me this mini watch on my finger, but we don't feel confident to wear it outside openly. There is this insecurity that anybody can attack us. Whatever happened was very unfortunate."

After this, the interviewer subtly steered Urvashi Rautela back to the subject of Saif Ali Khan and his family and asked if she would like to send them some well wishes. Urvashi said that she was praying for them.

ICYDK: Saif Ali Khan was stabbed around 2 AM inside his Bandra home. The actor was soon rushed to the Lilavati hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries. Saif is now recovering well.

2. Sugar was a big no on most days: Yes, having a balanced diet is very important. Being too restrictive is harmful in the long run, but giving in to your cravings too frequently will slow down the progress unnecessarily. Plan your meals, plan your indulgences, whenever pospossible, the cravings for healthier altalternatives,d when you know you're disdisciplined, have in a little here and there once in a while.

3. Early dinners: This one took time. I had to train my mind and body that eating by sunset was right for me. I did crave food while sleeping for a few days, but once my body had adapted to this new lifestyle, there was no going back. If and when I am forced to eat late dinners owing to social commitments now, I tend to feel heavy and uneasy while sleeping.

4. Perfectionism: This should have been first on the list. This is the first thing to let go of when trying to lose weight or improve your health overall! No two days are alike; some are extremely productive, where you get everything right: food, steps, workout, water intake, and sleep-every single aspect is spot on-and on most days you lack in something or the other, and that's all right. Consistency takes precedence over perfection here.

5. Punishment loop: I gave up on the idea of punishing myself for eating a piece of cake on my birthday by running for two hours on the treadmill and instead inculcated a wholesome relationship with food and my body. Where I take care of my body and its needs 80-85% of the time, and the remaining times when I indulge, my body supports me by metabolising the food.

Opinion: Trump's Return Has Exposed Europe's Weaknesses

Europe had experienced a great deal of heat from Donald Trump during his first term as president. He had cast doubt on the continuing relevance of NATO, viewed it as a financial burden on the US because the Europeans were not spending enough on their own defence, and demanded that they spend 2% of their GDP on defence. He showed his disdain towards the EU by supporting Brexit.

The belief that Russia had interfered in the US presidential election in Trump's favour had created misgivings that he might pursue a more flexible policy towards Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. His right-wing, nationalistic political orientation clashed with Europe's left-leaning liberalism. His Make America Great Again (MAGA) slogan created anxiety as it was considered inward-looking, protectionist and tending towards isolationism. European politicians were concluding that Europe and Trump's America no longer shared the same values.

Can Europe Cope?

Trump has now come back to power with a thumping majority. The Republicans have also won control of both houses of the US Congress. Trump is undoubtedly convinced that his re-election, despite all the legal and other efforts of the Democrats to disqualify and prevent him from fighting the election, has vindicated his proclaimed domestic and foreign policy agendas. Europe and others will have to cope with the unpredictability, impetuousness and self-assertion of this maverick president.

Trump, even before his inauguration, has put Europe under stress by his power play in questioning the continent's territorial integrity by laying claim to Greenland. During his first term, too, he had laid his eyes on Greenland, but this time ,he is brazen about acquiring it on grounds of “national security” and access to its natural resources such as oil, gas, lithium etc. Trump has threatened to pursue his claim with economic coercion or use of force, if necessary, as he considers ownership of Greenland an “absolute necessity”.

The president-elect clearly wants the US to become a major Arctic power in anticipation of the melting of the Arctic ice, which would open up a vital trade route between Europe/Asia and the Americas and allow mining of the oceans' rich resources of oil, gas and other minerals as well. At present, Russia dominates the Arctic geographically, and China is eyeing it too for its potential for trade connectivity. This is reminiscent of the ruthless great power politics of the 19th century.

This attack on Europe's territorial integrity puts Europe against the wall. Its dependence on the US for its security provides it no real option to resist. The response of European leaders has been to temporise and avoid challenging Trump head-on. The Danish prime minister recognises America's “security concerns”, while also stating that Greenland is not up for sale. The US already has a military base in Greenland, which can be expanded, and hence, the argument of security concerns seems debatable. The autonomous Greenland government has made hedging statements. The German Chancellor has resorted to a non-specific statement to the effect that the “inviolability of borders applies to all”. The French foreign minister has avoided mentioning the US by name while remarking that the EU would “not let other nations of the world attack its sovereign borders, whoever they are”.

Lost For Answers

The European Commission has refused to “go into the specifics” when asked to comment on Trump's claims. Van der Leyen, the head of the European Commission and Antonia Costa, the head of the European Council, stated evasively that the “EU will always protect our citizens and the integrity of our democracies and freedoms” and, rather pointlessly, that “we look forward to a positive engagement with the incoming US administration, based on our common values and shared interests. In a rough world, Europe and the US are stronger together”.

Europe is embarrassed and does not quite know how to respond adequately. Its geopolitical weakness has been exposed, diminishing its status as a collective power. It sees itself threatened by Russian power from the East and now by American power from the West—one an enemy and the other an ally. In Russia's case—which is unlike that of the US seeking to seize Greenland—it is not a territory belonging to an EU state that is being annexed or under threat of annexation. The message from all this is that Europe is unable to look after its own security. It depends on US-led NATO for protection, but it is the leader of NATO that is weakening NATO solidarity, with an uncomfortable message that Trump's America sees Europe as quasi-dispensable.

A Double Bind

The quandary for Europe is that if it were to react strongly and decide to condemn the US territorial bid, it would need an internal consensus, and seeking one could divide NATO. The NATO edifice, which is considered vital for Europe's security by member states, especially in East and Central Europe, could well begin to crack, given Trump's known disdain for the transatlantic alliance. A strong anti-US reaction could also weaken Europe politically against Russia. Europe's no-holds-barred discourse against Russia for seeking to annex the territory of a sovereign state and allegedly altering the map of Europe for the first time since the Second World War, as against a compliant attitude towards the US for a somewhat similar goal, could well become unsustainable.

Europe's problem is that it cannot build its security simply on the basis of countries increasing their defence budgets individually. The smaller European countries—and there are many—increasing their defence budgets means little. To be autonomously secure, Europe needs to rely on its own arms industry, European countries to buy European-produced arms, and Europe to have some kind of a centralised European chain of command. This will require a deepening of the EU as a sovereign entity, on which there is no political consensus amongst Europeans.

As things are, European security has remained frozen in the Cold War matrix, with Russia being an enduring threat and the US standing as a bulwark against it. Although France and the UK are nuclear powers, their nuclear umbrellas are not politically acceptable to many European countries. They would prefer to rely only on the US nuclear umbrella, especially in the face of Russia's formidable nuclear arsenal.

Narrative Wars

European public opinion could get confused if tensions between the EU and the US over the Greenland issue become acrimonious, and could well begin to affect public attitudes towards Russia, with mounting support for some compromise with Russia over Ukraine instead of a complete refusal to engage in a dialogue with Moscow. The discourse, in some circles, could well turn into one of US imperialism versus Russian imperialism.

On the Ukraine issue, Trump's repeated declarations on engaging in a dialogue with Russia to find a solution, the statement by the incoming US National Security Adviser that Russia cannot be expelled from all the territory it holds, and the implied message that Ukraine will have to yield territory, as well as talk of arranging a Trump-Putin meeting, are huge political blows to Europe, whose leadership has persistently demonised Russia and Putin and closed doors to any dialogue with Moscow. Trump is upending Europe's position of complete alignment with the Biden administration's position on the Ukraine conflict. There is reported concern in Brussels that Trump may lift some sanctions on Russia as part of a potential deal.

Other than security issues, Trump's presidency could increase economic pressures on the EU. This will come in addition to the economic costs paid by the EU because of Ukraine-related economic sanctions on Russia. During his first term, Trump had targeted Germany for its mercantilist trade policies. Germany's current economic woes add to Europe's vulnerability to US economic pressures.

Clash Of Values

Trump's personal deep antipathy to ‘wokeism', DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and gender identity issues will be another clash of “values” with Europe. Elon Musk, who is amplifying many of Trump's political and social views, has already become a major headache for the European political class. He is openly interfering in European politics by, for instance, supporting the right-wing nationalist party (AfD) in Germany, and the right-wing Reform Party in the UK. He has brutally targeted prime minister Keith Starmer on the “grooming gangs” scandal, calling him “complicit in the rape of Britain”. Vice-president-elect J.D.Vance has also attacked the UK over not suppressing Islamism in the country. Trump Jr has joined in criticising the Labour Party too. This bodes ill for the US-UK special relationship.
 
All in all, Europe's dependence on the US and its limited margin of manoeuvre have been brutally exposed with Trump's coming ascension to the White House.
