Opinion: How BJP Managed Allies In 2024

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

2024 was a year in which the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) skills in managing coalitions and addressing multiple challenges—some with finesse and others through subtle manipulation—clearly came to the forefront. The year began with the party fresh from victories in the assembly elections of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. The primary focus, however, was on the Lok Sabha elections.

For the BJP, the Lok Sabha election was about expanding its political footprint wherever possible while relying on its coalition partners when necessary. In Haryana, the BJP went alone, ending its alliance with the JJP. In Bihar, the BJP brought Nitish Kumar back into the NDA fold and drew the JD(S) in Karnataka into an alliance to put up a united fight against Congress, the ruling party in the state. In Odisha, after prolonged negotiations with the BJD, the BJP decided to contest alone. In Tamil Nadu and Punjab, the BJP formed new alliances to challenge the bi-polar political competition in these states. In Andhra Pradesh, it became the junior partner to the TDP-Jana Sena combination by bringing them into the NDA to challenge both Congress and the YSR Congress. In Uttar Pradesh, it included minor partners with strong local influence into the NDA. In Maharashtra, the BJP succeeded in ensuring splits among the two major regional players, the Shiv Sena and the NCP, and brought factions of both parties into the NDA. The party hoped that these efforts to expand its reach across the country's electoral map would yield political dividends. The slogan "400+" was a by-product of the confidence the BJP had gained from its coalition-building.

The results of the 2024 elections indicated that while most of the coalition partners (except in Tamil Nadu and Punjab) managed to put up a creditable performance, the BJP's own performance left much to be desired. The BJP's allies won 53 seats in 2024, compared to 50 in 2019. The BJP's own seat tally fell from 303 in 2019 to 240 in 2024—a difference of 63 seats. As a result, the BJP was compelled to declare a victory for the NDA coalition, as it fell short of the majority mark on its own. With the return of a genuine coalition era, many anticipated visible changes in the formation of the new government. It was expected that notional representation for partners would be a thing of the past.

When the ministry took oath, coalition partners received representation in the cabinet. The portfolio distribution mirrored what was seen in 2014 and 2019. The BJP leadership skilfully managed to accommodate the coalition partners. Key players—such as the JDU and TDP—were more focused on securing special attention for their states, where they were in power, rather than simply cabinet berths. The agreement seemed to be that key coalition partners would have a say in state politics, while the BJP would manage the national government. The Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP had insisted on a cabinet berth, but the BJP was unwilling to accede to the demand, resulting in the party having no representation in the ministry.

The second test of the BJP's coalition skills was evident in the Maharashtra and Jharkhand elections. The party succeeded in Maharashtra but did not reap electoral dividends in Jharkhand. Jharkhand deserves attention first. The BJP managed to secure a lion's share of seats within the NDA when distributing assembly tickets in the state. It fielded most of the candidates in the non-tribal seats, leaving many of the tribal seats to its alliance partners. However, the inability of the alliance to hold on to the non-tribal-dominated seats and make inroads into tribal areas led to the JMM-led coalition returning to power.

The situation in Maharashtra was quite different. In the three-party NDA alliance (called the Mahayuti in Maharashtra), the BJP negotiated for a majority of the seats, leaving the Shinde Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP to divide the remaining seats. When the Shiv Sena split and the Shinde faction backed the BJP to form the government, the chief ministership was given to Eknath Shinde, the leader of the breakaway Shiv Sena. Although the Mahayuti had a sitting chief minister, it did not formally declare him as the chief ministerial candidate. Both the manner of seat distribution and the silence on the chief ministerial candidate were clearly part of the BJP's coalition management strategy.

When the results came in, it was clear that the Mahayuti had achieved a historic victory, with the BJP itself recording its best-ever performance. Soon after the trends in Maharashtra became clear, by the afternoon of November 23, the focus shifted to the choice of chief minister. Would the incumbent, Eknath Shinde, be given another term, or would the BJP claim the chief ministership, given its spectacular performance? This became the central point of debate. The suspense continued for more than 10 days after the results were declared. Over these ten days, the partners and their leaders were gradually brought around. Ajit Pawar of the NCP was the easiest to convince, while Eknath Shinde held out for longer but ultimately gave in. This showcased the negotiation skills of the BJP leadership.
The party also convinced Shinde to accept the position of deputy chief minister, which he finally agreed to. The final two rounds of negotiations focused on the distribution of seats in the council of ministers and the allocation of portfolios. The more difficult negotiation seemed to be on portfolios, particularly the one for the deputy chief minister. Shinde was believed to be insisting on the home portfolio but ultimately had to settle for urban development and a few other ministries. A review of the portfolios shows that the BJP ministers secured a better deal.

This year demonstrated the BJP's capacity to drive negotiations with its coalition partners in its favour. With crucial state elections in 2025, it will be closely watched whether this trend continues or if there is a reversal.

Musk Changes His Name On X To 'Kekius Maximus', Uses Pic Of 'Pepe The Frog'

Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who is one of the most talked personalities in the world currently, has created a buzz on the internet again by changing his X (formerly Twitter) profile's display name to 'Kekius Maximus'. He also swapped his profile picture to an image of the famous 'Pepe the Frog' meme.

The tech mogul's new display picture shows 'Pepe the Frog' wearing golden armour and holding a video game controller. The image has been trending online for years and has been used in all sorts of posts symbolising humour and sarcasm.

'Kekius Maximus' is a meme-inspired cryptocurrency token operating on multiple blockchain platforms, including Ethereum and Solana. It recently emerged as a prominent entity in the cryptocurrency market, attracting attention from both investors and enthusiasts. As of December 27, Kekius was selling at around $0.005667 - representing a surge of 497.56 per cent in 24 hours.

The link between Musk's profile name change and cryptocurrency is not yet clear. However, in a post on X, he wrote, "Kekius Maximus will soon reach level 80 in hardcore PoE."

Musk has often shown interest in cryptocurrency. Recently, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that the owner of X will lead the 'Department of Government Efficiency' (DOGE) under his administration. DOGE was first proposed by Musk and was championed by Trump as a way to cut down on government bureaucracy. The department goes by the acronym 'DOGE' - the name of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency often touted by Musk.

This is not the first time Musk changed his X profile's display name. On January 26, 2023, he said, "Changed my name to Mr. Tweet, now Twitter won't let me change it back".

Panama Canal Treaty: Jimmy Carter's Legacy, Donald Trump's Threat

Jimmy Carter, the former US president who dealt with crises like the Iran hostage situation and brokered peace in the Middle East through the Camp David Accords, died on Sunday at the age of 100.

Mr Carter's presidency, though marred by economic struggles, is remembered for significant achievements such as the 1978 Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, and the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977, which transferred control of the canal to Panama. The move reshaped US-Panama relations and significantly impacted the geopolitical landscape.

The Panama Canal Treaty

Jimmy Carter, in 1977, signed treaties with Panamanian leader Gen. Omar Torrijos, which set in motion the gradual handover of the canal - a vital shipping route that had been under US control for over 75 years. The Panama Canal Treaty, agreed upon by both leaders, promised Panama full control by December 31, 1999, while the Treaty of Permanent Neutrality ensured the canal would remain open to vessels of all nations, and granted the US the right to defend it against any threats.

The decision led to a significant shift. The US had been deeply entrenched in the Canal Zone, a 82-km long, 16-km wide stretch of land in Panama that was essentially a US enclave, complete with its own government, courts, and military presence. But resentment had been growing in Panama, with increasing calls for sovereignty over the canal and an end to the segregationist policies of the Canal Zone, which had created inequality between US residents and Panamanians.

Many saw the transfer of control as a surrender to a military dictatorship, while others viewed it as a crucial step in ending colonial legacies. The treaty had a tough battle in the US Senate, but with support from unexpected sources, including Hollywood star John Wayne, it was ratified. The handover process began in 1977, with Panama gradually taking on administrative and military duties. By 1999, Panama had gained the expertise to manage the canal effectively.

Donald Trump Threatens To Take Over Panama Canal

Earlier this month, Donald Trump threatened to reclaim US control over the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of charging "excessive tariffs" for its use. The President-elect also warned that he would not allow the canal to fall into the "wrong hands," citing potential Chinese influence. He said that the canal was "solely for Panama to manage, not China or anyone else." He also threatened that if Panama did not adhere to certain conditions, the US would demand the canal be returned to them.

Panama's Response

Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino has firmly rejected any discussions with Trump regarding the control of the canal. Mr Mulino also dismissed claims of Chinese influence saying that the canal is "Panamanian and belongs to Panamanians," and there is no possibility of opening any discussions on this matter. He further clarified that the canal's tolls are not arbitrarily set by Panama's president or administrator but through a long-established, transparent process. Mr Mulino also emphatically denied Trump's allegations of Chinese soldiers operating the canal, calling it a baseless claim.

First Commercial Flight Validation Test Successful At Navi Mumbai Airport

The Navi Mumbai International Airport took a big step toward becoming operational on Sunday with its first commercial flight validation test being carried out successfully. An A320 aircraft from Indigo Airlines successfully touched down at runway 08/26 and was welcomed with a traditional water salute by two crash fire tenders.

The landing was witnessed by senior officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Airports Authority of India, Customs, Immigration, Central Industrial Security Force, City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO), India Meteorological Department, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security as well as Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and other key stakeholders.

"This is a momentous day for Navi Mumbai International Airport. The successful completion of the validation flight is a major milestone, and we are now one step closer to operationalising the airport, prioritising safety at every step. We are grateful to the DGCA and all the agencies involved in making the validation flight trial successful. Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will not only offer world-class aviation facilities, it will also enable the overall development of the region," said Mr Arun Bansal, Chief Executive Officer, Adani Airport Holdings Limited.

The touchdown of a commercial aircraft validates and establishes the synchronised functioning of Instrument Approach Procedures at NMIA (airport code: NMI). The exercise includes technical assessment, landing and take-off manoeuvres, paving the way for the DGCA to validate the data collected from the flight and for NMIA to receive the aerodrome licence, which is essential for operating the airport. NMIA's established flight procedures will also be published in the Electronic Aeronautical Information Publication.

"Prior to the landing of the validation flight, NMIA successfully conducted the flight calibration of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI), subsequently drafting instrument approach procedures to prepare itself for the arrival of the validation flight," a release said.

Before this flight validation test, the inaugural landing of an Indian Air Force C-295, a large multi-role tactical airlifter, had taken place on October 11, representing a significant milestone in the development of the greenfield international airport, which is scheduled to be operational early next year.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited is a special-purpose vehicle established for the development, construction, operation, and maintenance of the greenfield international airport project in Navi Mumbai on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis. NMIAL is part of Adani Airports Holdings Limited and is owned by Mumbai International Airport Limited (74% shareholding) and CIDCO (26% shareholding).

The project will be developed in multiple phases and, once complete, the airport will have the capacity to manage over 90 million passengers per annum. In the initial phase, NMIAL is implementing a passenger capacity of 20 million passengers cargo handling capacity of 8 lakh tonnes a year.

China Builds Over 200 New Prisons As Xi Jinping Ups Anti-Corruption Drive

China has built or expanded over 200 specialised detention facilities across the country to support President Xi Jinping's widening anti-corruption campaign, reports CNN. The detention facilities, known as "liuzhi" centres, are designed to hold suspects for up to six months without access to legal counsel or family visits.

Since coming to power in 2012, President Xi has prioritised combating graft and consolidating control over the Communist Party and military. Now in his third term, his anti-corruption crusade has become a defining feature of his leadership, extending beyond party lines into public institutions.

Liuzhi, codified in 2018, replaces the controversial “shuanggui” system, which was criticised for abuse and torture. The centres have padded surfaces, round-the-clock guards, and surveillance cameras to monitor detainees. They target not just Communist Party officials but also anyone exercising “public power,” including officials, civil servants, and managers of public institutions. Businessmen suspected of bribery can also be detained. High-profile cases include billionaire investment banker Bao Fan and former soccer star Li Tie, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for corruption.

Between 2017 and November 2024, more than 218 liuzhi centres were built or expanded, with construction accelerating post-pandemic.

Critics argue that the expanded detention regime enables abuse of power and forced confessions. A lawyer representing officials in corruption cases told CNN that detainees often face threats, torture, and extreme psychological pressure. “Most succumb to the agony,” the lawyer said.

In one case, Chen Jianjun, a former official, claimed he was subjected to sleep deprivation and forced to sit upright for 18 hours daily during his six-month detention. His account, shared by his daughter, includes sketches on toilet paper showing the harsh conditions.

Authorities have established standard construction rules for liuzhi centres, with a national plan in place for building these facilities between 2023 and 2027. The centres are designed to prevent detainees from harming themselves, with features like padded walls and anti-slip surfaces.

Critics warn that local anti-graft agencies may be abusing their power, detaining businesspeople on false charges to extract bribes. In a now-censored article, economist Zhou Tianyong called for reforms, arguing such practises could harm China's economy.

A proposed amendment to the national supervision law has stirred controversy. It mandates investigators to follow "lawful, civilized, and standardised" interrogation practises but overlooks demands for access to legal counsel during liuzhi detention. The amendment also proposes extending the maximum detention period from six to eight months.

Rajasthan Girl, 3, In Borewell For 6th Day, Mother Pleads For Rescue

Hapless mother of 3-year-old Chetna, who fell in a borewell on Monday afternoon in Kotputli, Rajasthan, is pleading with the administration to bring her daughter out to safety.

Dhole Devi, Chetna's mother, was seen making tearful appeals to the authorities on Saturday. "For God's sake, take my daughter out," she pleaded in despair. The ordeal has left her emotionally shattered as rescue efforts continue around the clock.

Chetna's uncle, Shubhram, said on Saturday that the officials are unresponsive. "If you ask too many questions, they say, 'The Collector ma'am will inform you; she's currently resting'," he said.

So far, the District Collector has not visited the family, he complained.

Chetna's mother is in deep distress, crying uncontrollably, desperately requesting the girl to be brought out, he added.

The child is trapped at a depth of 150 feet, and her family, along with the entire community, is anxiously awaiting her rescue.

In Kotputli, a relentless rescue operation has entered its sixth day to save three-year-old Chetna who fell into a 700-foot-deep borewell on December 23. Rescue teams have made progress, completing the welding of the casing pipe by Saturday morning. The next phase involves digging an 8-foot horizontal tunnel at a 90-degree angle, which officials hope will allow them to bring out Chetna soon.

The welding of the casing pipe has been finalised, enabling the team to focus on creating the horizontal tunnel. Fans, lights, oxygen, and cutter machines have been sent down the borewell to facilitate the operation. For safety reasons, the administration has restricted media access to the site.

The delay in implementing alternative rescue plans has sparked criticism among people as they argue that the simultaneous execution of Plan B alongside Plan A could have expedited the process, potentially avoiding the prolonged rescue timeline.

Despite these challenges, rescue teams remain committed to bringing Chetna back safely, with hopes for a positive outcome.\

Man On Rs 13,000 Salary Swindles Rs 21 Crore, Gifts 4BHK Flat To Girlfriend

A computer operator working with a state-run sports complex in Maharashtra for a monthly salary of Rs 13,000 allegedly siphoned off a huge sum of Rs 21 crore and used it to buy luxury cars and a 4 BHK flat for his girlfriend.

Harshal Kumar Kshirsagar, a contractual staff with the divisional sports complex in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is now on the run. Police have arrested his colleague Yashoda Shetty and her husband BK Jeevan on charges of supporting Harshal.

The investigation has revealed the meticulous plan the 23-year-old followed to siphon off money. Harshal used an old letterhead of the sports complex to email the bank, requesting a change in the email address linked to the sports complex's account. He had opened a new email account with an address similar to the sports complex's account -- only one alphabet had been changed. This email address was now linked to the sports complex's bank account: Harshal could access OTPs and other information required for transactions.

In his next step, Harshal activated Internet banking facility on the bank account of the divisional sports complex committee. Between July 1 and December 7 this year, he allegedly transferred Rs 21.6 crore into 13 bank accounts.

This money, police said, was used to buy a BMW car worth Rs 1.2 crore, an SUV that cost Rs 1.3 crore and a BMW bike worth Rs 32 lakh. Harshal allegedly gifted his girlfriend a plush 4 BHK flat near the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar airport. He had also ordered a diamond-studded pair of glasses for his girlfriend, the probe found.

Police suspect that more people could be involved in this massive fraud and are now collecting documents linked to the bank accounts used to siphon money. The luxury vehicles have been seized as police conduct searches to arrest Harshal.

According to police, the matter came to light when a sports department official noticed the financial irregularities and registered a complaint.

Senior police officer Prashant Kadam said three people have been named in the FIR so far. "Two accused have been arrested, one is on the run. The investigation found that he bought BMW car and bike, bought a luxury apartment and also ordered some gold ornaments. Our teams are looking for the main accused."

Sunita Williams' Christmas Video Sparks Debate Online, NASA Responds

NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who are currently stuck at the International Space Station (ISS), celebrated Christmas in space with Santa hats, sparking several conspiracy theories on social media. The video, posted by the US space agency, showed Williams wearing a red t-shirt, while three of her colleagues wore the Santa caps.

Social media users were quick to come up with theories, questioning if the astronauts knew they would have a prolonged stay at the ISS.

"You brought Christmas decorations into space months ago?" asked a user. Another said, "Seriously? How did they know to have all these Christmas decorations with them when they were only going in an 8 day mission?"

One user asked, "Who delivered the Christmas hats and decorations?? So...u thought far enough in advance to pack them when extra space in the capsule is at a very high premium??"

Williams and her fellow astronaut have been at the ISS since June. What was supposed to be an eight-day ISS mission, stretched into months due to a Starliner spacecraft malfunction. The astronauts were to return home in February next year, but even that has been delayed. They will now return in March.

However, NASA has put an end to the conspiracy theories.

The US space agency told the New York Post that the Santa hats. Christmas tree, and other decorations and presents were sent to the ISS crew members as a part of a three-ton SpaceX delivery in November. The package also had Christmas meals including ham, turkey, potatoes, vegetables, pies, and cookies. Apart from this, some mission-specific and scientific items were also a part of the delivery.

The International Space Station is replenished with supplies several times each year, it said.

NASA astronauts' Christmas greetings from space

NASA shared a video featuring Williams and others talking about their Christmas plans and extending their greetings.

"Welcome to the International Space Station as we get ready for the Christmas holidays. It's a great time up here, we get to spend it with all of our 'family' on the International Space Station. There are seven of us up here and so we're going to get to enjoy company together," Williams said.

She also spoke about the things she liked about the occasion, saying, "One of the best things that I like about Christmas is the preparation and just getting ready, the anticipation, everybody getting together and preparing stuff and just getting ready for the holiday."

"Thankful To Sachin...": Kambli's Big Message After Urgent Hospitalisation

Former Indian cricket team batter Vinod Kambli said that he was thankful to childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar for his blessings after the former had to be admitted to a hospital following a deterioration in his health. Kambli was struggled with health issues in the recent past and he was taken to the hospital by a fan. Medical examinations revealed clots in his brain but latest updates suggested that he was doing better. Kambli, who played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India between 1993-2000, recently attended the inauguration of legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar's memorial at the Shivaji Park. During the event, he met Sachin and both of them shared an emotional moment.

"I am feeling better now...I will never leave this (cricket) because I remember the number of centuries and double centuries I have hit...We are three left-handers in the family. I am thankful to Sachin Tendulkar as his blessings have always been with me...," Kambli told ANI.

After a series of examinations the medical team supervising him at Akruti Hospital in Thane found clots in his brain, Dr. Vivek Trivedi informed. Kambli's health is being constantly monitored and the team will carry out additional medical examinations on Tuesday, the doctor said.

Trivedi also said hospital in-charge S Singh has decided to provide life-long free treatment to Kambli at his medical facility.

Earlier, Kambli also opened up on his health struggles. The 52-year-old is doing 'better' but suffered a health scare about a month back.

YouTuber Zara Dar Quits PhD To Become Adult Content Creator

YouTuber Zara Dar, a former advocate for women in science and technology, has quit her PhD pursuit to become an OnlyFans model. In a YouTube video titled "PhD dropout to OnlyFans model," Ms Dar explained her decision, stating that while it was a difficult choice, she's not particularly sad. She described her move to OnlyFans as a career switch and a gamble on her future.

"Moving on to doing OnlyFans and content creation full-time it's not just a career choice it feels kind of like a gamble on the direction of my entire life," Ms Dar said.

Ms Dar has over 1 lakh subscribers on YouTube, her previous videos included tutorials on machine learning and neural networks.

Ms Dar, while considering a future in academia, ultimately decided to leave her PhD program. She weighed the potential benefits of a polished career in academia with the alternative path of becoming a professor and mentoring students. However, the tradeoffs associated with this lifestyle ultimately influenced her decision to pursue a different path.

"People whose lifestyles I thought I envied are tied to someone else's vision. They'll spend their lives working for a company and doing things they don't necessarily enjoy," she said, adding that these people would never get the recognition they deserve.

"Their work might win someone else's wealth and fame while they stay in the background," she said. "Expendable, they will constantly worry about getting laid off and planning their lives around their salaries, budgeting to pay bills and likely renting a place to live," predicted Ms Dar, who pursued a master's in computer science at the University of Texas.

Ms Dar shared that she had envisioned a different life for herself- one unbound by "the expectations of an academic institution or the constraints of a corporate office."

By opting out of a career in academia or the tech industry, she explained that she could focus on exploring and learning about topics that genuinely interested her, rather than being limited to subjects deemed important by funding agencies.

"I've made $1 million," she revealed, emphasizing the financial side of her decision.

In her video, Ms Dar explained that she started creating content on OnlyFans as a side project while pursuing her PhD. Through this venture, she earned $1 million, which she used to pay off her family's mortgage and buy herself a car.

"Thankfully, I avoided taking out any student loans. Now, I have an investment portfolio and am planning to buy my own house. These accomplishments are a testament to the tangible rewards of carving my own path and the freedom it has brought me," she said.

She concluded her video by highlighting that most professors in the U.S. earn around $100,000 annually and often spend more time writing grant proposals than conducting actual research- a lifestyle she felt wasn't aligned with her vision for herself.

Mosquito Repellent Sticks Ignite Fire At Home In UP, 2 Dead

Two people died in a fire ignited due to mosquito repellent sticks at their home in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad on Saturday night. The incident took place when the family of four were sleeping.

According to officials, the victims, Arun and Vansh, lit mosquito repellent sticks in their room at 1 am and slept. Around an hour and a half later, their father, Neeraj, woke up to a massive smoke and fire coming out of his children's room. He rushed in to save them, but one of his children, Vansh, had already died. The other victim was burnt due to the fire. He was taken to the hospital, but the boy was declared dead, officials said.

The victims' parents were sleeping in another room when the incident took place, officials added.

The family lived in Ghaziabad's Prashant Vihar area.

According to the victims' father, there was no electricity in the area when the incident took place as electric wires were being replaced.

"There was no electricity in the area since evening. Due to this lack of air and being troubled by mosquitoes, my children lit the mosquito repellent sticks between two bricks and kept them under the bed they slept on. They were sleeping with a blanket on...there were also some clothes on the bed," he said.

He added that the neighbours helped them break into the room.

"Our neighbours filled water in buckets and tried to extinguish the fire," the victims' father said.

The bodies of the victims have been sent for postmortem which will determine whether they died due to burns or smoke inhalation.

Watch: Man Escapes Unhurt After Train Passes Over Him At Bihar Station

A major accident was averted at a railway station in Bihar's Samastipur as a man slipped and fell on the railway tracks while trying to board a moving train. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

The passenger was trying to board the Bihar Sampark Kranti Express when he slipped and fell on the track, getting stuck between the train and the platform wall.

In a video, the train can be seen leaving the platform while a person can be heard asking those looking for the trapped passenger to stay away from the tracks. As the train leaves the station, a man can be seen lying next to the platform wall, with little to no injuries.

Once the man was spotted, a few people lifted him from the tracks. The train stopped after covering a short distance and the passenger was finally able to board the train and left for his destination.

This incident comes weeks after train operations at the Samastipur Junction railway station were briefly halted for nearly an hour after a fight broke out between two monkeys.

The incident took place near platform number 4 when both the monkeys were fighting over a banana. One of the monkeys threw a rubber-like object at the other, which then came in contact with an overhead wire causing a short circuit. The wire broke down and fell on the bogie of a train, halting operations at the station.

Popular Dog Arthritis Medication Is Killing Them, Says Report

The US Food and Drug Administration has issued an urgent warning on arthritis medication Librela, which is commonly being used to treat osteoarthritis in dogs. This injectable drug has been associated with severe side effects such as seizures, lameness, and loss of muscle control, which could potentially risk the health of pets.

Between January 2023 and March 2024, over 3,600 adverse health reactions have been reported, some of which may have been fatal. The FDA has issued a warning, published on Monday, to pet owners, cautioning them to be aware of the dangers posed by Librela, which could severely impact the health of affected dogs.

Pet owners should seek advice from veterinarians for alternative treatment plans and closely monitor their pets for signs of distress.

"The adverse events identified and analysed include ataxia, seizures, and other neurologic signs, including but not limited to paresis, recumbency, urinary incontinence, polyuria, and polydipsia. In some cases, death (including euthanasia) was reported as an outcome of these adverse events," the agency said.

Drug Information

The FDA approved Librela, a monoclonal antibody drug used for the control of pain associated with osteoarthritis in dogs, on May 5, 2023, and it was introduced to the marketplace later that year. Prior to approval, the FDA reviewed available studies and other data on Librela and determined Librela to be safe and effective for its intended use for control of pain associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. Librela is dosed by weight and labelled for subcutaneous injection once a month.

What should a veterinarian do if a patient treated with Librela has an adverse event?

If a dog under your care experiences an adverse event while receiving Librela, the FDA encourages you to report it to Zoetis, the drug sponsor, at 1-888-963-8471. Drug sponsors are required to submit reports of adverse drug events to the FDA. If you prefer to report directly to the FDA, please see https://ift.tt/r2L0Vnw.

When reporting adverse events to the FDA and/or Zoetis, please include, if available, a full medical history, how many times the dog has received Librela, and the lot number on the vial used.

Ashwin's Father's Shocking Revelation On Son's Retirement: "Humiliation..."

The plot behind Ravichandran Ashwin's international retirement thickens as the India all-rounder returned home from Australia on Thursday. Ashwin, who quickly flew out of Australia after leaving the cricket world shocked with his retirement decision, received a warm welcome at the Chennai airport. Even Ashwin's father and mother, who met him upon return to Chennai with tears in their eyes, admitted that the news was as much a shock to them as it was to millions of his fans across the globe.

In fact, Ashwin's father went on to say that 'humiliation' could be one of the reasons behind the Test great's decision to call it quits from international cricket so suddenly.

"I too came to know last minute, actually," Ashwin's father told News 18. "What was going on in his mind I don't know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feelings at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued."

"(Retiring) is his (Ashwin's) wish and desire, I cannot interfere in that, but the way in which he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation," he added.

"No doubt about it (emotional moment for the family) because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change, retirement, gave us really kind of a shock.

Ashwin has been at the top of his game, especially in Test cricket, for about a decade. He ends his career as the second-highest wicket-taker for the country, not just in Tests but in international cricket. Ashwin's father feels he would've continued playing but had to call it quits because he was being 'humiliated'.

"Definitely, no doubt about it (being emotional for the family), because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change - retirement - gave us really kind of a shock. At the same time, we were expecting it because humiliation was going on. How long he can tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own," Ravichandran said.

Ashwin only featured in the pink-ball Test for India against Australia, replacing Washington Sundar, who was preferred for the opening match in Perth. In the third Test at Brisbane, Ashwin found himself on the bench again, with Ravindra Jadeja taking his spot in the team.

The hint from the team management was clear, Ashwin wasn't India's No. 1 spinner in Tests anymore.

Gavaskar Disagrees With Ashwin Retirement Timing. Says, "Could've..."

Former Indian captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar reacted to Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement decision's impact on the team and said the allrounder the same what Dhoni did during 2014-15 Asutralia series. Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket immediately following the drawn Gabba Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gavaskar drew parallels to MS Dhoni's mid-series retirement during the 2014-15 Test series in Australia, arguing that such decisions disrupt team planning. "He could have said, listen after the end of the series, I won't be available for selection for India. What it does is that, similarly when MS Dhoni retired at the end of the 3rd Test in 2014-15 series, it leaves you one short," Gavaskar told broadcasters.

"The selection committee has picked so many players for a tour with a purpose. If there are any injuries they can select from the reserve players to have in the team. So, Sydney is somewhere where there is a lot of support on offer for spinners. So India could have played with two spinners. You never know. He could have been there for sure. I don't know how the pitch in Melbourne will be like. Normally, you tend to look at the end of the series. That's it. In the middle, it is not usual," he added.

When asked if Washington Sundar was being groomed to replace Ashwin, Gavaskar admitted it seemed likely. "Maybe Washington Sundar is ahead of him. Rohit mentioned that Sundar is flying out tomorrow. So, this marks the end of Ashwin as an international cricketer. He has been one heck of a cricketer," Gavaskar said.

Menwahile, Sundar posted a heartfelt post for state-mate Ashwin on Instagram, following the allrounder's retirement. "More than just a teammate - Ash anna, you have been an inspiration, a mentor and a true champion of the game. It's been an honour to share the field and the dressing room with you."

"Coming from the same state of TN, I have grown up watching you from the close corners of Chepauk to playing against you and alongside you. Every moment has been a privilege. The learnings, both on and off the field are something I will carry with me forever. Wishing you success and happiness in whatever comes next," the post read.

Ashwin's retirement comes at a crucial juncture in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with the series delicately poised 1-1 with the drawn Gabba Test. His absence leaves a gap in India's bowling arsenal, especially as they prepare for the upcoming Test in Melbourne and Sydney, traditionally a spinner-friendly venue.

Harmeet Dhillon, Trump Nominated Lawyer, Wades Into 'Punjab' Debate

Indian-origin lawyer Harmeet K Dhillon, who was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump as the Assistant Attorney General in his new administration has entered into the debate of 'Punjab v/s Panjab' after a post on X.

In a post on X, Dhillon wrote, "Pnjab"

This comes days after Indian singer Diljit Dosanjh, in a post on X referred to the state of Punjab as "PANJAB" in an announcement for his upcoming tour in Chandigarh.

After netizens expressed outrage over the alternative spelling of the state, the singer issued a clarification criticising the undue conspiracy people were getting into.

"If I mention Punjabi with the Indian flag in a tweet then there is a conspiracy, if I write Punjab as Panjab then it is considered a controversy. Whether you write Punjab as Panjab it will still remain Punjab. Panja-Aaab-5 Rivers. Those who are using the White man's language-English to generate a controversy -Congratulations. Keep going, how many times do I have to prove that we love India...do something new or is this the only task you have been assigned? "

As per the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), the earliest known use of the noun Punjab is in the 1830s with OED's earliest evidence for Punjab is from 1833, in Journal of Royal Geographical Society.

As per the official website of the Government of Punjab, the first known documentation of the word 'Punjab' is in the writings of Ibn Batuta, who visited the region in the fourteenth century. The term came into wider use in the second half of the sixteenth century, and was used in the book Tarikh-e-Sher Shah Suri (1580) in Persian.

"The name Punjab is made of two words Punj (Five) Aab (Water) i.e. land of five rivers. These five rivers of Punjab are Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum. Only Sutlej, Ravi and Beas rivers flow in today's Punjab. The other two rivers are now in the state of Punjab, situated in Pakistan", the website mentioned.

The Indian State of Punjab was created in 1947, when the partition of India split the former Raj province of Punjab between India and Pakistan, the website noted.

Hence, the usage of the word 'Panjab' has often been associated with the entire region as one state before the partition of India and Pakistan.

In this background, the post by Dhillon becomes significant as she would take up the post as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice under the upcoming Trump administration.

The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice plays a significant role in major civil rights issues of the US and also has prominence in key international issues as it is involved directly in addressing issues such as justice for victims of overseas terrorism, organised crime and cyber security amongst others.

In the post announcing her nomination, Trump had said, "I am pleased to nominate Harmeet K. Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the US Department of Justice."

"Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished Civil Liberties, including taking on Big Tech for censoring our Free Speech...Harmeet is a respected member of the Sikh religious community. In her new role at the DOJ, Harmeet will be a tireless defender of our Constitutional Rights, and will enforce our Civil Rights and Election Laws FAIRLY and FIRMLY."

Gavaskar's Unfiltered Verdict On Kohli's Yet Another 7th Stump Dismissal

It isn't often that one sees India's great Sunil Gavaskar mincing his words. As Virat Kohli departed after scoring just three runs in the first innings of the third Test against Australia, Gavaskar was quick to call out the India batter's poor shot selection. Facing Josh Hazlewood, Kohli edged the ball into the hands of Australia's wicket-keeper Alex Carey despite the fact that the ball was quite far from the stumps. Gavaskar, in his blunt criticism of Kohli, said that there was no need for him to play the 7th or 8th stump delivery.

"If it was on the fourth stump I could understand," Gavaskar said on Channel 7 after Virat was dismissed for a single-digit score on Monday.

"This was wide, on the seventh, eighth stump, you could say. There's no need to play that," he added.

Gavaskar feels Kohli would be extremely disappointed with the manner in which he was dismissed, understanding how much India needed him to play a big knock on the day, knowing Australia had put 445 runs on the board.

Gavaskar even felt that Kohli lacked the patience required to excel on The Gabba's tricky surface.

"He'd be very, very disappointed, he'd be very upset with that. Even before Rishabh Pant faced a ball, the rain started to come down and the covers have come on. If Kohli had shown a bit of patience he could be not out with KL Rahul," Gavaskar asserted.

The lure of playing cover drives has been one of the biggest reasons behind Kohli's struggles outside the off-stump. Even during India's net sessions, Kohli has been rigorously practicing his treatment of outside-off deliveries. However, in the matches, he has found it tough to curb his natural instincts.

Many pundits have advised Kohli to take inspiration from Sachin Tendulkar, in dealing with this tricky matter, especially on Australia pitches where the balls tend to bounce more than usual.

US Man Mauled To Death By His XL Bully Dogs In Front Of Horrified Onlookers

A California man has died after being mauled to death by his three 'XL bully' dogs at a children's playground. According to the New York Post, emergency calls were made to the San Diego police around noon, reporting a dog attack at the Mesa Viking Neighborhood Park. Upon arrival, officers found the victim being violently attacked by the three XL bullies. Despite desperate attempts by bystanders to intervene, the dogs refused to release their grip on the man. The ferocity of the attack was so severe that one witness initially believed police were attempting to subdue a violent suspect.

"I just saw they had something trapped in the weeds over here. I thought it was a person at first because they were talking about setting up a perimeter. They were big, like XL bullies, just massive muscle," said witness Steve Marto.

As the brutal attack continued, bystanders attempted to intervene, using shovels and a golf club to try and deter the dogs. However, the animals' ferocity persisted, forcing the police to resort to using tasers to subdue them. Two of the dogs were eventually caught and restrained, but a third managed to escape into the nearby neighbourhood. That prompted the nearby Ericson Elementary School to go into lockdown until the animal was found back at its home and captured.

A search operation ensued, and the loose dog was eventually tracked back to its home, where it was safely captured. The community breathed a collective sigh of relief as the situation was brought under control.

"The officer was able to break up the dogs. They fled, and the injured male was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries," police said. However, the 26-year-old man identified as Pedro Luis Ortega, died at the hospital.

San Diego Humane Society, along with police, confirmed the owner's death, CNN reported.

"The first victim sustained fatal injuries. Our hearts go out to the victim's family during this incredibly difficult time. Upon arrival, our Humane Officers worked closely with SDPD to locate two dogs that were still loose and safely impounded a third dog that had been secured in a vehicle," a Humane Society statement said.

The dogs were taken into custody "under mandatory bite quarantine protocols," and were later euthanised following standard protocol, the Humane Society said.

The Society officers also discovered a second person who had suffered severe bite wounds while attempting to aid the initial victim. This person was rushed to the hospital and is currently recovering. The Centers for Disease Control reports that on average nationally, 43 people die from dog bites and attacks every year.

Those Who Give Money To Beggars Will Now Face Police Case In This City

India's cleanest city Indore, which now aspires to be beggar-free, has decided on an extreme measure to ensure its streets are free of beggars. From January 1 onwards, the district administration will start registering FIRs against anyone who gives money to beggars.

District collector Ashish Singh told the media that the administration has already issued an order banning begging in Indore. "Our awareness campaign against begging will continue till the end of this month. If any person is found giving alms from January 1, an FIR will also be registered against him/her," he said. "I appeal to all residents of Indore not to become partners in the sin by giving alms to people," the official added.

Efforts to make Indore streets beggar-free are being made under a pilot project of the central government to rehabilitate beggars. The project covers 10 cities -- Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Indore, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna and Ahmedabad.

During the anti-begging campaign, the Indore administration made some startling revelations. Project officer Dinesh Mishra said, "When we prepare reports, we find some beggars have a pucca house, and others' children work in a bank. Once we found Rs 29,000 on a beggar. Another beggar loaned money and claimed interest. One gang came with children from Rajasthan to beg here. They were rescued from a hotel where they were staying."

Madhya Pradesh Social Welfare Minister Narayan Singh Kushwaha said an Indore-based organisation has come forward to support the government in its efforts. "The organisation will provide shelter to them for six months and try to find work for them. We are working tirelessly to free people from begging," he said.

Mysterious Reason Why Over 300 Elephants Died In Botswana Revealed

At least 350 elephants died under mysterious circumstances in Botswana in 2020, sparking global concerns while leaving scientists puzzled about the reason for the mortalities. Four years later, a study conducted at King's College London may have finally unearthed the answer. As per the research, a "toxic brew" of open water tainted by a species of cyanobacteria that releases cyanotoxins, which contaminated the watering holes in the region, led to mass elephant deaths.

Combining satellite data and spatial analysis the study revealed that as many as 20 watering holes in the Okavango Delta had been contaminated across roughly 6,000 sq km. After drinking, elephants were estimated to have walked an average of 16.5 km from the toxic waterholes and died within about 88 hours of exposure.

"Our results highlight that seasonal, predominantly rain-fed pans, rather than the permanent waterbodies (i.e., lakes, rivers, and lagoons) within the Panhandle, were the likely source of cyanotoxin exposure," said Davide Lomeo, the lead scientist of the study.

Notably, the dead elephants were of varying ages, with tusks intact which led to scientists ruling out death by poaching. Additionally, no carcasses of other wildlife or livestock species were observed at the time of one of the aerial surveys.

What promoted algae growth?

Not all cyanobacteria or blue-green algae is toxic but some cyanobacteria produce a type of deadly algal blooms (HABs) in standing water. As per the study, the shift from a dry 2019 (the driest year in decades in the region) to an extremely wet 2020, may have prompted the unprecedented algal growth due to the resuspension of significant amounts of sediments and nutrients from the ground.

"Scientists believe that the production of cyanotoxins is related to certain environmental triggers, for example, sudden rise in water temperature, nutrient loading, salinity," said Mr Lomeo.

Scientists have warned that such incidents may become frequent in the future owing to climate change.

"Southern Africa is projected to become drier and hotter under climate changes, and as a result, waterholes across this region will likely be drier for more months of the year. Our findings point to the potential negative effects on water quantity and quality, and the catastrophic repercussions on animals, this could have.

The study underscores the severe ecological consequences of toxic algal accumulation while emphasising the critical need for water quality surveillance across water bodies, including the smallest ones.

"Never Blamed Machines": Ally Omar Abdullah Trashes Congress's EVM Charge

At a time when Congress and its allies have raised questions on the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and demanded a return to ballot voting, INDIA alliance member National Conference has said one has to be "consistent" in questioning the voting method.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, also the vice-president of Congress ally National Conference, told news agency PTI in an interview that it is wrong to question EVMs only when results don't meet expectations.

"When you get a hundred plus members of Parliament using the same EVMs, and you celebrate that as sort of a victory for your party, you can't then a few months later turn around and say... we don't like these EVMs because now the election results aren't going the way we would like them to," Mr Abdullah said. When he was told that his remarks echoed the BJP's counter to the Congress's EVM charge, Mr Abdullah said, "God forbid... No, it's just that... what's right is right."

"If you have problems with the EVMs, then you should be consistent in those problems," he said, adding that parties should not contest polls if they do not trust the voting method.

Citing his example of losing in the Lok Sabha election and scoring a big win in the Assembly polls months later, he said, "One day voters choose you, the next day they don't. I never blamed the machines."

In the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls this year, -- the first after the Centre revoked its special status and turned it into a Union Territory -- the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference posted a stellar show by winning 48 seats in the 95-member Assembly. The Congress, which fought the polls in alliance with National Conference, won six seats.

Mr Abdullah said he spoke on principles instead of partisan loyalty. In another remark at odds with the Congress line, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister praised the Narendra Modi government for infrastructure projects like the Central Vista.

"Contrary to what everybody else believes, I think that what's happening with this Central Vista project in Delhi is a damn good thing. I believe constructing a new Parliament building was an excellent idea. We needed a new Parliament building. The old one had outlived its utility," he said.

Mr Abdullah's remarks come amid the protest by the Congress and some of its allies against the EVM voting method after its big losses in Haryana and Maharashtra. The BJP has trashed the allegations and pointed to the Opposition's win in Jharkhand, which voted along with Maharashtra.

The National Conference leader's statements also come amid rumblings within the INDIA Opposition bloc, with the Trinamool Congress demanding a change at the top and naming its chief Mamata Banerjee as leader of the alliance.

On a question regarding this issue, Mr Abdullah acknowledged that there is disquiet among some INDIA partners as they felt Congress was not doing enough to earn the bloc's leadership.

"By virtue of being the single largest party in Parliament, and also having the leader of opposition in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the fact that they have a pan-India footprint, which no other party can lay claim to, they are natural sort of leaders of an opposition movement," he said.

"Yet there is a sense of disquiet among some of the allies because they feel the Congress is "not doing enough to justify it or to earn it or to keep it. That's something the Congress might wish to consider." Mr Abdullah praised former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and said described her as a leader of unparalleled stature within the Opposition. "When the INDIA bloc comes together, she plays an important leadership role," he added.

Video: Man Jumps Out Of Moving Car As It Skids On Snowy Road Near Manali

Himachal Pradesh witnessed the season's first snow this week. While tourists and locals celebrated the snowfall by taking pictures and videos, many people had horrifying experiences navigating the hill station in cars. A video is doing rounds on social media showing cars losing control on snow-covered roads near Atal Tunnel. The clip shows multiple cars skidding out of control on the snowy stretch, which connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti Valley. It also captures a man jumping out of a moving car, narrowly escaping a tragic incident.

Mikheil Kavelashvili: Ex-Manchester City Player Who Will Be Georgia President

Former Manchester City footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili is all set to become Georgia's next president on Saturday. The 53-year-old, who previously served as an MP with the ruling Georgian Dream party, is the only candidate for the position. His appointment will be decided by an electoral college controlled by the Georgian Dream party, which changed the election process in 2017, eliminating popular voting for president.

Many view Mr Kavelashvili's upcoming presidency as "illegitimate," given the widespread social unrest in the capital, Tbilisi. He's set to become only the second former footballer to serve as a head of state, following in the footsteps of George Weah, the former president of Liberia.

Who is Mikheil Kavelashvili?

  • Mikheil Kavelashvili played as a striker for Manchester City during the 1995-96 Premier League season. He scored once on his debut in a Manchester derby, though his time at City was brief and unspectacular. Over his 12 months at the club, he made 29 appearances, scoring 3 goals.
  • He also played as a striker for many Swiss clubs – Grasshoppers, Zurich, Luzern, Sion, Aarau, and Basel. He played for Dinamo Tbilisi and Spartak Vladikavkaz. On national duty, he represented Georgia 46 times, scoring nine goals.
  • After retiring from football, Mr Kavelashvili transitioned into politics. He was elected to the Georgian parliament in 2016 and later became a key figure in the Georgian Dream political party, which has been accused of harbouring pro-Russian sentiment.
  • He left the party in 2022 and co-founded the People's Power party. On November 27, 2024, Georgian Dream nominated him as their presidential candidate for the election on December 14.
  • Mr Kavelashvili is known for his far-right political stance. He was nominated for the largely ceremonial role of president-elect of Georgia in December 2024, following a controversial re-election of the Georgian Dream party.

The election comes after 16 days of protests across Georgia, where citizens have rallied for the country's pro-EU stance.

Why Are People Protesting In Georgia

The protests erupted following the Georgian Dream party's decision to delay talks on joining the European Union until 2028. The decision has angered many citizens hoping for closer integration with the EU. The protests intensified after Mr Kavelashvili was nominated as the country's next president.

The 53-year-old is seen by protesters as a puppet of oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, the party's founder. Protesters also disapprove of his controversial views, especially on LGBTQ rights, and criticise the Georgian Dream party for aligning more closely with Russia than the West.

Georgia Protests

Demonstrations have persisted in Tbilisi and other cities, with protesters gathering in central locations such as the Parliament and Heroes' Square. The protests are likely to escalate, especially with Mr Kavelashvili's upcoming presidential election. More than 400 arrests have been made, and over 100 people have been hospitalised as of December 12, CBS reported.

'Those Looking For Temples Under Mosques Don't Want Peace': Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said those looking for temples under mosques don't want peace, a day after the Supreme Court paused ongoing surveys of places of worship, including mosques.

Mr Yadav's statement came during the debate on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Among other instances, it referred to the violence in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal last month over the survey of a mosque, in which several people died.

The Kannauj MP said the BJP does not respect Indian voters. He added that voters in Uttar Pradesh were not allowed to vote in the Lok Sabha elections, alleging that they were stopped by the police.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said the Constitution has kept India secure and united and is the soul of democracy. Speaking during the debate on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha, he raised doubts on the security along the borders, state of economy and internal safety of citizens. Referring to the alleged Chinese transgressions, he said India's borders are shrinking.

Mr Yadav said efforts are being made to make the country's 20 crore minorities, especially Muslims, second class citizens. "Caste census will bridge gap among castes. Whenever we get opportunity, we will conduct caste census," he said.

Gukesh D Says He Wants To Play Against Magnus Carlsen, World No. 1 Responds

World number one Magnus Carlsen has lauded D Gukesh for making the most of his chances to be crowned the youngest-ever world chess champion but has ruled out the possibility of a title showdown with him as desired by the Indian teen. The 18-year-old defeated defending champion Ding Liren in the 14th and final round of the match on Thursday to become only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to claim the coveted trophy.

"It's an incredible achievement (by Gukesh), first he was down in the FIDE circuit, won the tournament in Chennai on demand, then he had an amazing performance in the Candidates tournament," said Carlsen on a popular recap stream, analysing the match.

Carlsen said he was a bit surprised by how the match unfolded with most of the games ending in draw.

"This was something that was bit unexpected, a lot of us thought that Gukesh was a favourite to win the match but this was a game that never really took off, Gukesh was doing a great job of keeping the position alive and suddenly it was all over," Carlsen said.

"It's a really good thing for him, he has the title now for two years, winning this championship is extremely motivating so there is a very good chance that he is going to go for a great run of results now and probably become the number two player now and may be number one in the not so distant future," he noted.

In the post-event press conference, Gukesh stated that he would love to fight it out against Carlsen at some point. The Norwegian maverick decided not to defend his title in 2023 after winning the world championship in 2013.

"Winning World Chess Championship does not mean I am the best player, obviously that is Magnus Carlsen. I want to reach the level Magnus has achieved," Gukesh said.

"Obviously playing against Magnus in the world championship would be amazing, it would be the toughest challenge there is in chess. It is up to Magnus, but I would love to test myself against the best player in the world."

But Carlsen ruled that out. "I am not part of this circus anymore," said Carlsen in a general reference to world title clashes.

Carlsen also praised Gukesh's team and said they did a good job.

"It is becoming progressively harder (to play mainstream openings) all main lines are analysed so they had to jump a bit," Carlsen said of the opening choices made by Gukesh.

"I have generally kept it fairly risk-free with the white pieces, I have tried not to let things go out of control," he added.

The world's best player for a decade now was critical of Liren's choices in the final game.

"There are lot of things that Ding could have done differently, Gukesh really made most of his chances," he said.

"It's a massive moment for India, it's a combination of work that is being done there. This is not over.

"There are many more success stories to come, it was really heartwarming to see what it means to Gukesh, it was a very beautiful moment," Carlsen summed it up.

"Rs 2,000 Ki Plate": This Wedding Invitation Card Takes Internet By Storm

A viral wedding card has taken a hilarious jab at the typical Indian wedding cliches, offering a unique and humorous perspective on these familiar traditions. The reception invite begins by playfully acknowledging the inevitable guest's comments about the wedding food. It then introduces the bride as "Sharma Ji ki ladki," emphasising her academic achievements, and the groom as "Gopal Ji ka ladka," a B.Tech graduate who now manages a shop, adding a touch of self-deprecating humour.

The wedding date playfully referred to as a "holy day" selected by three priests, is conveniently timed to coincide with the end of a relative's exams.

Recognising the potential for family drama at Indian weddings, the card humorously acknowledges the inevitable disagreements that may arise between relatives, particularly referencing "Bua and Fufa Ji," and playfully offers some lighthearted advice to guests on how to navigate these situations.

The card resonated deeply with social media users, with its humorous advice ranging from controlling children from playing on stage to the playful request to greet "Fufa Ji" to avoid his displeasure - a situation humorously described as causing his face to "puff up like a golgappa."

The card playfully highlights the concept of Indian Standard Time, stating that the wedding is scheduled for 7:00 PM, but they anticipate arriving by 8:30 PM.

Check out the card here:

The last leaf of the card humorously listed the family members with witty descriptions.

Mama and Mami (maternal uncle and aunt) were humorously credited with providing the traditional Mayra (gifts from the maternal side), which the card suggested is why their names are listed at the top.

The Bua-Fufaji are labelled as "in-house kalesh experts," while the "irritating bachche" (annoying kids) are called out for spoiling the pictures on stage.

The RSVP section humorously reads "Rishtedar Saare Vahi Pakau" (All the same boring relatives).

The post shared on X quickly went viral, garnering over 2.20 lakh views. Netizens found the witty comments highly relatable, leading to widespread laughter. It also sparked a flood of comments from users eager to share their own thoughts.

Another user remarked, "Honest wedding card."

The third user asked, "Can I use this Invitation Card for my Son's Wedding?"

Shatrughan Sinha Admits He Two-Timed Wife Poonam And Co-Star Reena Roy

Film veteran Shatrughan Sinha confessed that he cheated on his wife Poonam Sinha when his co-star Reena Roy was in his life, in a recent interview with Lehren Retro. Without taking names, the senior actor admitted he made "mistakes" in life and his love triangle took a toll on his mental health. Busting stereotype ideas, the actor shared, men (not only women) also "suffer" when they are caught in complicated relationships. Shatrughan Sinha was asked how he analyzes that phase of his life where he had both Reena Roy and Poonam in his life. "I wouldn't take names. But, I am grateful to all the women who were part of my life. I don't have any grudges against anybody. I never think ill of them. They have all helped me grow and become a better person," said Sonakshi Sinha's father.

"When a man is good at heart, and he is having two committed relationships simultaneously, he too suffers a lot in terms of his mental and physical health. You also feel guilty. When you are out with your lover, you feel guilty for your wife at home and when you are with your wife, you feel bad for your lover: Usko khilona banake kyu rakha hai (Why am I treating her like a toy)?'", Shatrughan Sinha said unapologetically.

Talking about "mistakes" in his life, the veteran actor said, "I have definitely made mistakes in my life. It was natural for a boy, who had come all the way from Patna to get lost in the glitz and glamour of the industry. I didn't know how to deal with stardom. People get lost in all this. I didn't have any guardian to guide me. However, after Poonam came in my life, she helped me a lot."

On Reena Roy's role in his life, he said, "I don't want to take the name, but whatever was happening with this person. I am grateful to her. I have received lots of love from her, and have learnt a lot. I have no complaints."

Shatrughan Sinha also added, "I want to say, it's not just the girls involved in the love triangle that are suffering, the man equally suffers. He struggles to get out of the situation even when he wants to."

Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy met on the sets of Kalicharan (1976) and went on to star in films like Milap, Sangram, Sat Sri Akal, and Chor Ho To Aisa, where they came close to each other until Shatrughan Sinha announced his marriage to Poonam Sinha. In an interview with Rajiv Shukla, Shatrughan Sinha addressed the reason behind his decision. The actor said, "Sometimes in life, one reaches a juncture where making a decision becomes very difficult. But once the decision is made, it may not always be in everyone's favour."

Opinion: Opinion | Opposition vs Centre: A Battle That Keeps Worsening

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

A rare development has marred the functioning of Parliament in its seven-decade history. The collective decision by the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha to submit a motion against the Chairman on Tuesday is unprecedented.

This move, despite the Opposition's lack of bench strength and awareness of the technical shortcomings, highlights the extent to which relations have soured.

A motion against Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar was thought of during the previous session and gained momentum in the ongoing winter session, driven by charges of his partisan conduct. The Opposition pressed ahead with the motion even though it fell short of the mandatory 14-day notice required for such a motion to be brought before the House for consideration.

A Never-Ending Saga

A standoff between the Opposition and the ruling coalition has become a regular phenomenon in Parliament, as have the disruptions and turbulence. However, severe disagreement regarding the functioning or conduct of the Chair has not been raised in this manner in the Rajya Sabha until now. Parliamentary managers from the ruling coalition and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokespersons have engaged with the Opposition, providing reasons behind their actions. Yet, what remains unspoken is the fact that the entire Opposition—heterogeneous and with separate priorities—has made common cause. This unified step should be evaluated dispassionately.

Five years ago, the Opposition signalled its lack of trust in the conduct of the Upper House by submitting a similar motion against the Deputy Chairman. That motion was also rejected as it did not meet the mandated notice period requirements. Nevertheless, this development could be seen as symptomatic of the Opposition's perception of being denied space.

This lack of trust in presiding officers is rare in the Rajya Sabha, though there have been instances in the Lok Sabha where motions were submitted against Speakers G.V. Mavalankar (1954), Hukum Singh (1966), and Balram Jakhar (1987).

Opposition And Its Role

Parliament consists of both the ruling coalition members and the Opposition. In the era of coalitions, another phenomenon has emerged. Some parties occupy a middle ground, often characterised as maintaining an “equidistant” position from either side and offering, at best, “issue-based” support.

However, when a party with a majority, whether on its own or in coalition, is comfortable with its bench strength, the situation changes. It is here that parliamentary managers on all sides play a crucial role. These leaders often meet across the table to resolve differences and find common ground.

Such a discussion took place as recently as 10 days ago. The government and the Opposition came to an understanding, with the government agreeing to hold a debate on the Constitution in both Houses, while the Opposition suspended its agitational approach. However, this truce now seems fragile.

While there are sufficient parliamentary devices in the rule book for the Opposition to raise concerns, the main issue appears to be the priority and specific provisions being invoked. For example, in the Lok Sabha, the Opposition attempts to raise an issue through an Adjournment Motion, while in the Rajya Sabha, Rule 267 is invoked. The decision to admit or reject these motions rests with the Chair.

In the past, such stand-offs between the government and the Opposition were resolved through a collective approach, with both sides finding a midpoint between their maximalist positions.

Is There A Solution?

Parliamentary managers, particularly on the ruling side, play a crucial role in ensuring that the businesses of the Houses are conducted and that the legislative agenda moves forward. The Opposition must understand that stalling Parliament cannot continue indefinitely. While creating pressure on the government is one aspect, interrupting parliamentary work creates a perception that the institution is dysfunctional.

Disruptions and the stalling of proceedings in both Houses of Parliament have been a recurring phenomenon since the mid-1980s. Despite several attempts and resolutions adopted by leaders on many occasions, such as on Parliament's 50th anniversary, to avoid these practices, they have become entrenched, irrespective of which party is in power.

One potential solution could be to adopt the practice of designating specific days for the Opposition, as done in the British and Canadian Parliaments. After all, the parliamentary adage holds that while the opposition can have its say, the government must have its way.

Veteran Telugu Actor Mohan Babu Attacks Reporter, Then An Apology From Son

Telugu actor Manchu Manoj has apologised to the media after his father and veteran actor Manchu Mohan Babu attacked a journalist covering a property dispute between the father and his son. Mr Manoj appeared with folded hands before the reporters this morning and said he would disclose all details about the dispute at a press conference later in the day. The cops have already registered a case and summoned Mohan Babu after a reporter with the TV9 news channel lodged a police complaint.

The property dispute saw Mohan Babu and his younger son Mr Manoj file police cases against each other yesterday. To cover the dispute, several newspersons had reached the veteran actor's house in Jalapalli at his invitation, the TV reporter said in his complaint.

Manchu Manoj too had reached his father's house at that time and forced his way in after an argument with the bouncers at the gate. During this, some journalists had also entered the house along with Mr Manoj and his private security men.

Mohan Babu got enraged when the reporter asked him a question about the dispute and videos showed him grabbing the reporter's microphone and attacking him with it.

The journalist fell to the ground and was later admitted a hospital. The doctors at the hospital later said the reporter suffered three fractures in his cheekbone and needed plastic surgery. The reporter also said in his complaint that Mohan Babu used abusive language and the attack led to a severe head injury.

The bouncers drove out the reporters after the incident.

Mr Manoj later told reporters it was his mistake to get the reporters inside the house. "I was helpless in that situation," Mr Manoj said.

The journalists staged a protest in front of the Film Chamber office this morning and demanded that an attempt to murder case be filed against Mohan Babu. They also demanded that the Movie Artists Association, a top Telugu film body, expel the actor.

Mohan Babu's elder son and actor Manchu Vishnu, who is also the president of the association, has called it an "unfortunate incident". "We are in touch with them. This is an unfortunate incident and I wish it did not happen," he said this morning.

Mr Vishnu, who arrived from Dubai yesterday, said such quarrels are common in the family and the issues would be resolved soon.

Mohan Babu was also hospitalized after the incident with complaints of body aches, high blood pressure, and severe neck pain. A health bulletin by Continental Hospital said he is mentally distressed and unable to comprehend what's happening around him.

Reacting to the reports on the dispute, Mr Manoj said yesterday he was not fighting for possessions or money. "I am fighting for self-respect. I am not getting justice. The police are acting unilaterally. I will meet everyone until I get justice," he said.

Elon Musk's "Crazy" 1998 Prediction About Media's Future Now A Reality

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has shared an old video in which he predicted that the internet would “revolutionise traditional media”. Mr Musk's 1998 prophecy has come true; the internet has indeed transformed the way we consume media today.

In the reposted video from 26 years ago, the Tesla CEO responded to an interviewer's question about the future of the internet. “I think the internet is the superset of all media,” Mr Musk said. “It is the fuel and end all of the media. One will see print, broadcast, arguably, radio... essentially all media falling into the internet.”

He explained the internet's unique ability to facilitate interactive “two-way communication medium that is intelligent.” “It allows consumers to choose what they want to see, when they want to see it, whether that be radio, whether that be print, whether that be television, broadcast,” he added.

“I think it's going to revolutionise all traditional media,” he concluded.

He now revealed that many once thought his vision was “crazy,” for pointing out “this super obvious prediction.”

Elon Musk aims to provide high-speed internet globally through his SpaceX Starlink project, which uses a network of satellites in low-Earth orbit. The service is designed to serve remote and underserved regions, offering unlimited data, no contracts, and low-latency connections. Starlink is user-friendly, with customers receiving a dish and modem that can be self-installed. Starlink is also reportedly seeking to enter the Indian market to provide satellite internet, challenging major players like Jio and Airtel.

Earlier, the SpaceX CEO predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) will eventually eliminate all jobs, but he doesn't view this as a negative development. Speaking remotely at the Viva Tech event in Paris, Mr Musk said, “Probably none of us will have a job,” in a future where work becomes “optional.”

He explained that people could choose to work if they wanted to, describing jobs as something one could do “like a hobby.” He believes AI and robots will provide all the goods and services people need. Mr Musk also mentioned the need for a “universal high income” to make this vision a reality, though he clarified that this is different from universal basic income (UBI), a concept where the government provides money to everyone, regardless of their earnings.
