New York Fruit Seller's Reaction After Banana Auctioned For $6.2 Million

A 74-year-old fruit vendor is receiving unexpected support after his humble banana was sold for an extraordinary $6.2 million at an auction at Sotheby's. Shah Alam sold the banana for just 35 cents (Rs 29) not realising it would go on to become the centrepiece of Maurizio Cattelan's artwork, ‘Comedian'. The surreal sale of the fruit taped to a gallery wall explores the absurdities of the art world.

Mr Alam, a Bangladeshi immigrant who has lived in the US since 2007, works at a modest fruit stand on the Upper East Side for $12 an hour, selling fresh produce to locals. He had no idea the banana he sold to a visitor at the Sotheby's auction house would become a world-famous item fetching millions.

Upon hearing about the sale, he broke down in tears. "I am a poor man," he told a New York Times reporter. "I have never had this kind of money; I have never seen this kind of money."

Living in a shared basement apartment in the Bronx, Mr Alam works 12-hour shifts, four days a week, regardless of the weather. Despite the unexpected windfall for the banana, he felt like the joke had been at his expense. “Those who bought it, what kind of people are they?” he asked. “Do they not know what a banana is?”

Last week's auction saw the banana fetch $5.2 million, with extra fees bringing the total to $6.2 million. The buyer, Chinese cryptocurrency mogul Justin Sun, said he admired Mr Alam's role in the work.

Mr Sun, whose net worth is estimated to be over $1.4 billion, has also announced that he plans to buy 1 lakh bananas from Mr Alam's stand as a gesture of gratitude. "To thank Mr Shah Alam, I've decided to buy 100,000 bananas from his stand in New York's Upper East Side,” Mr Sun wrote on X. “These bananas will be distributed free worldwide through his stand.”

Mr Sun's support was not the only sign of solidarity. An anonymous New Yorker launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Mr Alam.

"Do we really want to live in a city where we can shrug off a street vendor who's moved to tears...while celebrating some smartass for figuring out how to make $6 million from that joke?” the campaign's organiser, known only as "JS," wrote. The fundraiser quickly raised over $15,296 (Rs 12.93 lakh), with JS promising to directly deliver the money to Mr Alam.

"I will walk to the fruit stand myself next week (after Thanksgiving) and take a video of me handing him the money myself," JS wrote. "If I don't find him, GoFundMe will return your money."

Virat Kohli Dethroned As India's Top-Earning Cricketer. New No. 1 Is...

The conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction has changed the cricketing dynamics in the country. Rishabh Pant set a new record after being bought for INR 27 crore by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) while the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer were bought for Rs. 26.75 crore and 23.75 crore respectively. When it comes to retention among Indian players, Virat Kohli was the top pick, with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) deciding to pay INR 21 crore to keep him at the franchise.

Now that the salaries of IPL players are confirmed, Rishabh Pant has emerged as the highest-earning Indian cricketer, purely from a cricketing earnings point of view. The wicket-keeper batter earns a total of Rs. 32 crore annually from his cricketing commitments, dethroning Virat Kohli who now earns INR Rs. 28 crore annually.

Both Pant and Kohli have two sources of income - BCCI and IPL contracts. Pant slots in the A category in the BCCI central contracts, earning Rs. 5 crore annually while his IPL earning is Rs. 27 crore annually, hence taking the overall amount to Rs. 32 crore.

For Kohli, the earning through the BCCI central contract comes to be Rs. 7 crore since he is part of the A+ category of players. RCB pays him Rs. 21 crore annually for playing in the IPL (as per the new contract), hence taking the overall earnings to Rs. 28 crore.

Pant's earnings, however, can increase when the new BCCI central contracts are announced in March next year. In all likeliness, Pant can be promoted to the A+ category, considering he is key to Team India's plans in all three formats. Such a move by the board would see him increase the lead of Kohli further.

Kohli, who is no longer a part of India's T20 squad, could see himself being demoted to the A category of players, hence taking a pay cut.

When it comes to Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer, the next top earners from the auction, neither of the two is a part of the BCCI central contracts at the moment. However, Shreyas still stands the chance of being included if he makes a return to the Indian team.

"Weren't We Suffering Enough?": Australian PM Pokes Kohli, Gets Epic Reply

The Indian men's cricket team met Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ahead of the 2-day practice match in Canberra. India's returning skipper Rohit Sharma introduced Mr. Albanese to the entire Indian team. Though it was only for a brief period that the Australian PM met members of the Indian team, he did have some 'spicy' talks with Virat Kohli. In a video that has surfaced on social media, Mr. Albanese was seen having a cheeky conversation with Virat, where he lauded the Indian cricket icon's performance at Perth in the first Test.

"Good time at Perth. Bloody hell, as if we were not suffering enough at point," the Australian Prime Minister said as he met the Indian team. It was Kohli's reply that won everyone's hearts on social media. "Always got to add some spice to it," Kohli said in response.

The practice match has been scheduled ahead of the Indian team's pink-ball contest against Australia in Adelaide.

“The squad contains a mix of experience combined with some promising emerging players in Australian cricket. The Prime Minister's XI match presents an opportunity for a highly-talented squad to impress against a strong Indian team in their only pink-ball hit out prior to the second Test,” Cricket Australia's chief selector George Bailey said.

“We are utilising the opportunity to maintain Scott Boland's match fitness in his preparations as part of the Test squad. We thank the Prime Minister for his input into the squad which sees some of the country's most exciting young cricketers mixed with some highly experienced players,” he added.

Prime Minister's XI squad: Jack Edwards (c), Charlie Anderson, Mahli Beardman, Scott Boland, Jack Clayton, Aidan O'Connor, Ollie Davies, Jayden Goodwin, Sam Harper, Hanno Jacobs, Sam Konstas, Lloyd Pope, Matthew Renshaw, Jem Ryan

India didn't have a memorable outing at Adelaide the last time for a pink-ball Test (in 2020), they were famously bowled out for 36 runs in the second innings. Though India wen on to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that year, the ghosts of that collapse still haunt the team.

Two Drunk Fliers, Two Supreme Court Judges And 30-Minute Mid-Air Drama

On September 15, two Supreme Court judges boarded a night flight from Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore. Justice Surya Kant and Justice KV Viswanathan were returning from the wedding of a brother judge's son. It was Sunday night and the two judges had a long list of cases listed the next morning. They decided to sit apart and use the three-hour flight time to prepare for the hearings on their iPads. At the time of boarding, it seemed like just another flight. But it was not to be.

Hearing a petition that seeks tough guidelines to tackle unruly fliers, Justice Viswanathan yesterday referred to their harrowing experience mid-air due to two drunk, male passengers.

NDTV has learned that the judges were seated in the front row, close to the galley area and the toilet. About 30 minutes into the flight, some people started complaining that a male passenger had been in the toilet for about half an hour and was not responding to knocks. Around this time, another male flier walked towards the toilet, puking into an air sickness bag. The sight left the passengers, including the two senior judges, unsettled.

The flight crew repeatedly knocked on the toilet's door, but there was no response. They had a master key but did not want to open the door since they were unaware of the male passenger's condition. Eventually, they requested other fliers to open the door. When a passenger unlocked the door, the male passenger was found drunk and asleep. He was helped out of the washroom and brought back to his seat. The judges learned that the other passenger, throwing up near the washroom, was also drunk. Seated in the first row, they experience first-hand the mid-air situation created by unruly passengers and the need for proper guidelines to tackle them.

It is but a coincidence that the petition seeking an SOP to deal with unruly fliers, filed by an elderly woman who was allegedly urinated on during an Air India flight, came up before a judge who has experienced how such actions inconvenience other passengers.

During the hearing yesterday, Justice Viswanathan said "something creative" must be done to address this issue. "Maybe strategic seating or something."

The bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Viswanathan has been adjourned by eight weeks and the Centre's counsel, Additional Solicitor General Aiswarya Bhati, asked to instruct authorities concerned to examine and modify guidelines to manage unruly fliers in line with global practices.

Dhanush Sues Nayanthara Over 3-Second Clip Controversy

Dhanush has filed a civil suit against Nayanthara for allegedly using visuals related to his production Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her Netflix documentray without his clearance - the latest in an escalating row  between two popular Tamil cinema stars. Dhanush has approached the Madras High Court against Nayanthara, her husband Vignesh Shivan and their production house Rowdy Pictures Private Limited. The civil suit claims Nayanthara and others used certain visuals connected to the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the Netflix original Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale. Dhanush's Wunderber Films Private also has taken out an application urging the High Court to grant permission to sue in Tamil Nadu the Mumbai-based company Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, an entity through which Netflix reports its content investments in India.

As Dhanush's lawyer P.S. Raman made the case for permission to sue Los Gatos, it was opposed by the rival counsels Sathish Parasaran and R. Parthasarathy, representing Ms. Nayanthara and Netflix. After hearing both sides, the judge allowed Dhanush's request.

Dhanush's move came days after his threat last week of legal action  if the content (in Nayanthara's documentary) wasn't taken down within 24 hours. The statement from Dhanush's legal representative asserted, "Advice your client to take down the content infringing my client's copyright over the film NAANUM ROWDY DHAAN by using the same in your client's documentary named NAYANTHARA BEYOND THE FAIRYTALE within 24 hours, failing which my client will be forced to initiate appropriate legal action, including but not limited to seeking damages to a sum of Rs. 10 crores against your client and Netflix India."

Nayanthara had shared an open letter on Instagram, slamming Dhanush for touching "an all-time low" with his demand for Rs 10 crore compensation from the Jawan actress for use of footage lasting a few seconds. Nayanthara also shared a post thanking Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan and other producers who allowed her to use footage from their films for her documentary and granted her their all-clears "without any hesitation and delay."

Rashmi Shukla: 5 Facts About IPS Officer Who Is Back As Maharashtra DGP

IPS officer Rashmi Shukla has been reinstated as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra. The state home department formalised her reappointment late Monday, after the conclusion of the election code of conduct.

Ms Shukla was transferred two weeks before the Maharashtra Assembly polls following the Election Commission's directive. She will now resume her duties as the state's top police officer. Sanjay Kumar Verma, who served as the interim DGP, will return to his original position as DG Legal and Technical.

Here are some facts about IPS Rashmi Shukla:

1. Rashmi Shukla, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, is one of the senior members of the Maharashtra police force. She served as the Police Commissioner of Pune and was deputed to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as an Additional Director General (ADG) in Hyderabad. After her tenure in the CRPF, Ms Shukla was appointed the head of the Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB), a paramilitary force. She is the first woman to become Maharashtra's police chief.
2. During the BJP-Shiv Sena government led by Devendra Fadnavis (2014-19), Ms Shukla served as the Commissioner of the State Intelligence Department (SID). Her tenure, however, was controversial.
3. She faced accusations of illegally tapping the phones of several prominent political leaders, including state Congress chief Nana Patole, NCP leader Eknath Khadse, and Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut. These allegations led to three FIRs against her in Mumbai and Pune under the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. One of the cases involved the alleged leak of a phone-tapping report. Ms Shukla was named an accused in two of the three cases.
4. In December, the Bombay High Court quashed two of the FIRs against her. The Shinde-Fadnavis government transferred the third case, involving phone tapping allegations, to the CBI. The CBI closed the case after filing a closure report, allowing Ms Shukla's return to her position.
5. The Election Commission had ordered the transfer of Ms Shukla after the opposition, primarily Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), alleged that she was biased towards the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and claimed her role as DGP would hinder fair elections. The Maharashtra government reinstated her on Monday after the conclusion of the election code of conduct.

Fearing Job Loss, Locals Clash With Cops Over Vaishno Devi Ropeway Project

A proposed ropeway project along the trek to the Vaishno Devi shrine has sparked unrest among local shopkeepers, pony service providers, and labourers. Protesters clashed with police today at the Katra base camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district leading to several people getting injured.

The protests in Katra stem from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board's (SMVDSB) decision to proceed with a Rs 250-crore passenger ropeway project connecting Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat. The 2.4-kilometre ropeway, expected to shorten the trek to just six minutes, aims to benefit pilgrims, particularly the elderly and those with limited mobility. However, locals fear the project will devastate their livelihoods.

Hundreds of shopkeepers, porters, and pony service providers participated in a sit-in protest and chanted slogans like "Bharat Mata ki Jai" to voice dissent. The protesters argue that the project will bypass the traditional route, upon which their livelihoods depend.

Prabhat Singh, a leader of the shopkeepers' association, said, "We will not allow the ropeway project to be implemented in Katra. We have been fighting against it for three years. Assurances were given to us in the past, but now they have gone ahead with the project."

Protesters today confronted a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vehicle attempting to pass through the demonstration site. In the chaos that followed, the vehicle's windshield was shattered, and police intervened to restore order. Stones were reportedly thrown at J&K police and CRPF personnel.

Protesters have blocked the main bus stop in Katra through which the buses to the Vaishno Devi shrine run. The Vaishno Devi temple sees an annual footfall of over 80 lakh pilgrims.

"The law and order situation has become challenging and we are trying to handle it. Officers are in talks with the protesters to resolve the issue," Reasi's Senior Superintendent of Police Paramvir Singh said.

Initially called as a 72-hour strike on November 22, the protest was extended by an additional day. Despite reassurances from authorities, the protesters demand either the complete withdrawal of the project or compensation for the anticipated economic losses.

"The ropeway project will be a game changer, especially for those pilgrims who find it challenging to undertake the 13-km steep trek to the shrine," the shrine board said in a statement.

Gujarat Tailor Shocked By Rs 86 Lakh Power Bill. Then This Happened

A tailor in Gujarat's Valsad was in for a shock when he received an electricity bill that exceeded his shop's property value. Muslim Ansari runs the shop with his uncle and usually pays power bills through UPI. His heart skipped a beat when he saw the bill amount: Rs 86 lakh.

"I was stunned and thought how could this happen. I rushed to electricity board office the next day and showed them the bill," he told the media.

New Fashion Tailor, located in Chor Gali of Valsad, stitches men's outfits, ranging from shirt-pants to sherwanis. The shop draws electricity supplied by the state-owned Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited that has over 32 lakh consumers spread across seven districts in south Gujarat.

Soon after Mr Ansari flagged his massive bill, officials from the discom rushed to his shop and examined the meter. What they found was that two digits -- 10 -- had been mistakenly added to the meter reading and this led to the huge bill amount.

"There was a mistake. The person who took the meter reading added the digits 10 to the meter reading and this led to the (Rs 86 lakh) bill. We have now given a revised bill of Rs 1,540," said Hitesh Patel, an employee of the power distribution company.

Muslim Ansari is relieved now. "They have checked the issue and given me a new bill. This is for Rs 1,540. The electricity bill for the shop is usually under Rs 2,000," he said with a smile, between hemming garments with his sewing machine. The shop is attracting several visitors now after the news of the 86 lakh bill spread. Some are also clicking photos of the old bill. Mr Ansari joked that he should now start charging for the photographs.

GRAP 4 Curbs To Stay In Delhi, Supreme Court Flags Gaps In Toxic Air Fight

Tough restrictions on vehicular movement and construction activities in Delhi will stay for now, the Supreme Court ruled today. The national capital, battling bad air days for the past few weeks, is currently under the fourth stage of curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). GRAP 4 was imposed after the Air Quality Index crossed the 450 mark last week and entered the 'severe +' category.

The court, which earlier said GRAP 4 curbs won't be eased without its approval, said it would take a call on this question in the next hearing on Thursday. Delhi's Air Quality Index is now a tad better than last week and has dropped to the 'very poor' band.

The court, however, said the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) can take a call on whether to resume physical classes in schools in Delhi and other cities in the National Capital Region.

The bench of Justice AS Oka and Justice AG Masih cracked the whip on Delhi Police, warning the city police commissioner of prosecution for poor implementation of curbs to tackle the air pollution.

The bench today noted that without even seeing any report, it can say that no checkpoints to regulate vehicles are in action.

A counsel appearing for the 13 court-appointed commissioners who monitored implementation of the curbs told the bench that while checking happened, it is not clear how effective it was. The counsel said cops were "jumping in the middle of the road" to stop trucks and that there was no barricading at several checkpoints.

The Delhi government's counsel said employees of various levels were deployed at the checkpoints. When the court asked if Delhi government issued specific instructions to Delhi Police, the former said Delhi Police does not come under its authority.

The court then asked the Commission for Air Quality Management and the Centre if they issued specific instructions to police. It was told that orders were issued for 23 checkposts. The court asked why it was not done for the other posts. "You were bound to post officers. We are going to ask the Delhi police commissioner to be penalised under the CAQM Act," the court said.

The court noted that it is apparent that authorities have not made "earnest efforts" to implement the curbs and and asked CAQM to take action against the officials concerned. It said GRAP 4 curbs were not implemented properly and proper steps to stop trucks from entering Delhi were not taken.

On the question of resuming physical classes at schools, the bench noted that all children do not have access to Internet to take online classes. The court has asked the CAQM to take a call by tomorrow.

The court praised the 13 Bar members named court commissioners and said they will continue to monitor the situation and submit reports to the court.

"It is apparent that the authorities which are mentioned against item numbers 1, 2 and 3 of stage 4 of GRAP have made no earnest effort to implement the action in terms of clauses 1 - 3. Some police teams were deputed at a few entry points that also without any specific instruction. In fact the report of the court commissioner indicates that at most of the entry points the police were posted pursuant to the order of this court dated 23rd November. There is a serious lapse on the authorities mentioned against clauses 1 - 3. We therefore direct the Commission to immediately initiate action in terms of section 14 of the CAQM Act," it said in its order.

The court also said that the curbs cannot be downgraded below GRAP 2 till the court sees a "consistent downward trend of AQI". "We direct all the states to use funds collected as labour cess to provide subsistence to construction workers when such work is prohibited and all states shall comply with the same," it said, adding that CAQM must issued directions to relief labourers and daily wagers.

"This Is Stage Managed": India Slams West 'Agenda' At COP29

India has rejected the new $300 billion climate finance deal for the Global South, which has been agreed upon and adopted at the United Nations COP29 Summit in Azerbaijan's capital Baku. India raised the objection after the financial package had been adopted, saying that it was too little and too late.

Chandni Raina, the representative of the Indian delegation, expressed her disappointment over the outcome and said, "We are disappointed in the outcome which clearly brings out the unwillingness of the developed country parties to fulfil their responsibilities."

Department of Economic Affairs adviser, Raina, while addressing the closing plenary session of the summit, said that the delegation was not allowed to speak before the adoption of the deal.

"I regret to say that this document is nothing more than an optical illusion. This, in our opinion, will not address the enormity of the challenge we all face. Therefore, we oppose the adoption of this document," she said.

"$300 billion does not address the needs and priorities of developing countries. It is incompatible with the principle of CBDR (Common but Differentiated Responsibilities) and equity, regardless of the battle with the impact of climate change," Raina added.

The Indian negotiator added, "We are very unhappy, disappointed with the process, and object to the adoption of this agenda."

Supporting India, Nigeria said the $300 billion climate finance package was a "joke". Malawi and Bolivia also lent support to India.

About The Deal

The agreement would provide $300 billion annually by 2035, boosting rich countries' previous commitment to provide $100 billion per year in climate finance by 2020. That earlier goal was met two years late, in 2022, and expires in 2025. The deal also lays the groundwork for next year's climate summit, to be held in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, where countries are meant to map out the next decade of climate action.

The summit cut to the heart of the debate over the financial responsibility of industrialized countries - whose historic use of fossil fuels has caused the bulk of greenhouse gas emissions - to compensate others for worsening damage from climate change.

It also laid bare divisions between wealthy governments constrained by tight domestic budgets and developing nations reeling from the costs of storms, floods and droughts.

Negotiations had been due to finish on Friday but ran into overtime as representatives from nearly 200 countries struggled to reach consensus. Talks were interrupted on Saturday as some developing countries and island nations walked away in frustration.

United Nations climate chief Simon Stiell acknowledged the difficult negotiations that led to the agreement but hailed the outcome as an insurance policy for humanity against global warming.

"It has been a difficult journey, but we've delivered a deal...This deal will keep the clean energy boom growing and protect billions of lives," Stiell said.

"But like any insurance policy - it only works - if the premiums are paid in full, and on time."

Canada To 'Abide' By ICC Arrest Warrant Against Netanyahu

After the United Kingdom, Canada said it would "abide" by the arrest warrant issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by the International Criminal Court (ICC). "We stand up for international law, and we will abide by all the regulations and rulings of the international courts," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

"This is just who we are as Canadians," he added.

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli premier and his former defence minister Yoav Gallant on Thursday for "crimes against humanity" committed since the Israel-Hamas war began more than a year ago, triggered by the militant Palestinian group's October 7, 2023 attack.

A warrant was also issued for Hamas's military chief Mohammed Deif.

Earlier on Friday, the British government indicated that Netanyahu could be arrested on the ICC arrest warrant if he travelled to the UK.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesman said: "The UK will always comply with its legal obligations as set out by domestic law and indeed international law."

However, he refused to be drawn specifically on whether UK police would detain Netanyahu, telling reporters he would not "get into hypotheticals in relation to individual cases".

Both the UK and Canada are part of the Five Eyes, an intelligence alliance also composed of Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Other countries that agreed to follow through with the ICC's decision include-- Belgium, the European Union, France, Iran, Ireland, Jordan, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, South Africa, Switzerland, and Turkey among others.

Other key Five Eyes member US has, however, called the move 'outrageous'. "The ICC issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli leaders is outrageous," President Joe Biden said in a statement.

"Let me be clear once again: whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence - none - between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security," the statement added.

However, the warrant was supported by US Senator Bernie Sanders, who took to X and said: “All launched indiscriminate attacks against civilians and caused unimaginable human suffering”.

“If the world does not uphold international law, we will descend into further barbarism,” he added.

Other countries to declare 'disagreement' with ICC decisions include-- Argentina, Austria, and Hungary, among others.

"World War 3 Has Begun": Ukraine Ex-Military Commander Amid Russia Conflict

Valery Zaluzhny, former military Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine, believes World War III is underway, adding the direct involvement of Russian allies in the conflict indicates the same.

"I absolutely believe that in 2024 we can believe that the Third World War has begun," Mr Zaluzhny said during a speech at the Ukrainska Pravda's UP100 award ceremony.

Now serving as Ukraine's envoy to the United Kingdom, Mr Zaluzhny pointed to the direct involvement of Russia's autocratic allies as a significant factor in the war's global expansion.

"Soldiers from North Korea are standing in front of Ukraine. Let's be honest. Already in Ukraine, the Iranian 'Shahedis' are killing civilians absolutely openly, without any shame," he continued, stressing North Korean troops and Chinese weapons were now actively contributing to the war.

Mr Zaluzhny urged Ukraine's allies to take decisive action and prevent the conflict from spreading beyond the country's borders. "It is still possible to stop it here, on the territory of Ukraine. But for some reason, our partners do not want to understand this. It is obvious that Ukraine already has too many enemies," he warned.

His comments came amid heightened tensions, with Moscow reportedly deploying over 10,000 North Korean troops to the Kursk region and utilising Iranian drones and other advanced weaponry against Ukraine.

"Ukraine will survive with technology, but it is not clear whether it can win this battle alone," Mr Zaluzhny said.

His speech also coincided with Russia's use of a hypersonic ballistic missile in Dnipro, an attack that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned as a severe escalation. "This is a clear and severe escalation in the scale and brutality of this war," Mr Zelensky said.

Valery Zaluzhny has remained a significant voice in Ukraine's military and political discourse despite his dismissal earlier this year. Once celebrated for stopping Russia's initial invasion in February 2022, tensions with President Zelensky led to his ousting. General Oleksandr Syrskyi replaced him, reportedly for his closer alignment with Mr Zelensky's strategies.

Opinion: Delhi's Air Pollution Situation Is Like A Bad Marriage

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

We, the people of Delhi, are in a bad marriage with the city. This marriage is beyond redemption, but both parties dither in calling it quits. Because calling it quits brings not only pain but also an acknowledgement that we made a mistake. So, we carry on with the burden of our past mistakes on our fingers only to dig our claws deeper into each other's skin.

On a ‘good' day, such as today, the AQI reading in Delhi is 407. We are jubilant at the sickly sunshine trickling through the slightly dissipated smog. At least it's not 1600. At least s/he isn't hitting me in the face. We are so used to the drama of this destructive toxicity that we are scared of the lack of drama. Our lungs get into a shock when we are exposed to clean, crisp air the way we feel threatened by a love that does not thrive on contractual power dynamics. We are instinctively scared and suspicious. We seek beauty in the haze of smog exactly how we find comfort in the seeming stability of a marriage.

This beauty and this stability are enough to kill us a hundred times over.

Pollution, Marriage And Class

Resorting to generalisations, there is a class-defined perception of pollution of both marriage and air. While the rich keep discussing it ad nauseam from the relative comforts of their homes—with airconditioning and purifiers cranked up to max—the poor have no such luxury. In fact, they light a fire to keep them warm. The results are the same.

The rich have the luxury of getaways and vacations to lull them into thinking that it's not that bad. Or that it's temporary. The poor have their fatalism going for them. What's even the point of complaining when everything is awful anyway? This is us. This is how it is. This is how we live and die. The poor also mimic the rich without the safety net.

A recent report claims that there's no Delhi household without at least one member suffering from a pollution-related ailment. There are about 200 listed marriage counsellors in Delhi. The unlisted number could be even higher. And then there is the bevvy of family and friends who are ever so ready with their advice. There are at least 10,000 divorce lawyers in the city. You get the gist. Yet, it's a good day today.

It's very easy to blame the ‘other' for when things get ugly. It's the farmers of Haryana and Punjab. No, it's the automobiles in NCR. It's the other woman. Are you crazy? It's her nosy family, silly. It's her. It's him. It's them. It's never me.

Shifting Goalposts

We decide to GRAP-ple. We find new goalposts, we shift the old ones. “This is reasonable. At least today is better than yesterday.” And we fall into the old patterns when the obvious disasters, the 1600 AQI, come down to the ‘reasonable' limits of 450. We go back to keeping up the pretences for ourselves and others. We even celebrate with outdoor brunches.

We want somebody else to “fix” everything. We look at forces larger than us. God and government. Neither is interested in fixing anything. Governments and corporations have vested interests in maintaining the status quo because the alternative is inconvenient. Just as acknowledging a troubled marriage in the family is inconvenient. Turning a blind eye suits everyone.

But there are children involved, too. Oh, they will be fine. They need this. They need a good school. They need opportunities. They need stability. Stability. They'll grow up as ‘stable' people from ‘stable' families. The outside world is dirty anyway. They need not breathe in it. Let's buy them screens to shield them. Let's settle.

We're Culpable, Too

The resilience of the human body is unmatched. We get used to every horror if exposed long enough to it, from bad sex to bad air. It's not a good thing. It stops us from seeking change. We seek and demand change only when we can't bear it and our body gives up. But in most cases, it's too late by then.

We have the laws on our side to protect us. We don't know how to get them to protect us. Because that needs work. But, before that, an honest admission is needed: we have been living out our mistakes. We are enablers. We are culpable, too.

We'll keep burning stubble, sex, and dirty sources of power.

We'll keep constructing and deconstructing—villas, slums, dreams and demons.

What we'll not do is upset the apple cart. Because we are taking it one day at a time. Because in the end, we are all dead.

Snake Found In Jabalpur-Bound Jan Shatabdi Express, Railways Starts Probe

Panic ensued as a snake was found slithering among the overhead luggage aboard the Jan Shatabdi Express between Bhopal and Jabalpur.

The snake was found in the Jan Shatabdi Express two days back and the matter is being probed, West Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Harshit Shrivastava told PTI.

The area where the train was cleaned has been sanitised and workers there have been put on alert.

Further, a probe by the Railway Protection Force in underway from various angles. The possible involvement of an outsider in releasing the snake inside the train's coach is also being investigated.

Last month, a live snake was discovered in an AC coach of the Vasco-da-Gama Weekly Express travelling from Jharkhand to Goa on October 21. Several passengers spotted the snake slithering near the curtains of a lower berth in an AC 2-tier coach and took videos of it. The snake was caught and removed from the train with the help of IRCTC staff, who responded promptly to the situation.

In a similar incident in September, a long snake was found coiled around the iron bar that held the upper side berth of the Garib Rath Express going from Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur to Mumbai.

An incident in April took a dangerous turn when a passenger was allegedly bitten by a snake on the Madurai-Guruvayur Passenger Express. The passenger got down at Ettumanoor station and shifted to the Medical College Hospital.

Earth's Magnetic North Pole Shifting Towards Russia. Here's What It Means

The Earth's magnetic North Pole is moving towards Russia at an accelerating pace, British scientists have discovered. They have been tracking the North Pole for centuries, which has relocated some 2,250 kilometres from Canada towards Siberia, according to Live Science. But its travel seems to have accelerated - between 1990 and 2005, the rate of movement increased from 15 kmph to 50-60 kmph. The magnetic North Pole is important for several reasons, such as navigation, protection from radiation and GPS used to create the World Magnetic Model.

However, the magnetic North Pole is different from the geographic North Pole, which stays the same as it is the place where all longitudinal lines converge.

What magnetic North Pole's movement means?

The shifting of this crucial point is tracked by scientists from the UK to the US as it allows our smartphones and other devices to navigate.

"Planes, boats, submarines, you name it, it's in there," William Brown, the global geomagnetic field modeler at the British Geological Survey, said in an interview with The Times.

If the movement continues at this rapid pace, Earth's magnetic North Pole will move by 660 kilometres in the next decade. This in turn will cause all compasses to "probably point eastward of true north" by 2040, according to scientists at the British Geological Survey (BGS).

South Pole is moving too

The same thing is happening with the Earth's magnetic South Pole, which is drifting eastwards over Antarctica.

Scientists say the switch happens every 300,000 years. But the last swap or Earth poles happened 780,000 years ago, so experts say we are long overdue.

Why the poles are moving?

The molten iron in Earth's outer core flows in unpredictable ways, causing the magnetic poles to shift.

"It's like a giant cup of tea It's a hot liquid with the viscosity of water," Mr Brown told The Times.

When the poles switch, there comes a time when the magnetic shield shrinks to zero before growing again with the opposite polarity.

What happens if Earth's magnetic field disappears?

The Earth's magnetic field plays a crucial role in sustaining life and protecting technological systems. This invisible shield extends from the Earth's interior out into space, forming a protective bubble and shielding the planet from solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun. But what if this vital magnetic field were to disappear? The consequences would be profound, affecting everything from the environment to human health and technology.

Without a shield, the deadly radiation would reach Earth thereby increasing the mutation rate of living cells and leading to cancers in animals.

"Legend": Sarfaraz, Siraj Star-Struck After Seeing This Star In Australia

Things are about to get very serious Down Under. It's India vs Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The teams' rivalry is currently the most followed battle on the cricket field. In recent times, India have dominated Australia but this time things look different. Smarting from a 3-0 loss to New Zealand at home, India look vulnerable. All eyes will be on players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah among others to deliver against Australia.

Before the battle starts, the Indian cricket team members engaged in a fun session where they were asked about a particular question about their career. Virat Kohli was asked about his best knock in Australia.

"My best knock in Australia is definitely be my 100 at Perth. 2018-19 series that we played. I thought that was the toughest pitch that I played on in Test cricket. It was great to get a hundred on that tour," Kohli said while answering Mohammed Siraj's question.

After that Siraj and Sarfaraz Khan could be seen getting star-struck  as they looked at him and said "legend, legend".

Meanwhile, Sanjay Manjrekar, a former cricketer and now a cricket analyst, delved into how Australian bowlers might tackle Kohli's batting approach. Manjrekar believes that Kohli is "well aware" of the tactics that will be used against him.

He said exclusively on Star Sports, "I think Virat knows exactly what's going to be planned. They'll start with that line outside the off-stump and gauge what his mindset is. These days, he often leaves balls outside off and looks to drive anything pitched up. Australia might also try to cramp him for room and attack his body since he likes to get forward. This was a tactic New Zealand used effectively."

Manjrekar further elaborated that if Kohli is focused on balls outside the off stump, Australian bowlers, particularly Josh Hazlewood, might target a line on the middle stump, similar to the one Vernon Philander used effectively.

"If he's focused on balls outside off stump, bowlers like Josh Hazlewood might target that typical Vernon Philander line on middle stump. Australia will test various strategies, and Virat Kohli is fully aware of that," Manjrekar added.

Explained: Why Delhi's AQI Was 494 Today But International Monitor Said 1,600

Delhi's air quality remained severely toxic on Tuesday, with the overall air quality index (AQI), which measures pollutants, spiked to 494. According to the Central Pollution of Control Board (CPCB) data, most of the monitoring stations in the national capital recorded an AQI of 500, forcing all schools across Delhi-NCR to go online. However, at the same time, the international monitoring app, IQAir, showed Delhi's AQI at 1,600.

Why Delhi's AQI Was 494 but IQAir showed 1,600?

All countries have different standards for measuring the air quality index. It varies from country to country, depending on pollutants and their measuring scale. In India, the scale of PM 2.5 is 60, while in some countries, that have adopted the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard, is five or ten.

Similarly, India's AQI has been capped at 500 - which means that an air quality index bigger than that is a big warning that the level of pollution is extremely severe.

According to the CPCB, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, 401 and 450 severe, and above 450 to 500 is severe-plus.

On the other hand, IQAir - which is based on the US model developed by the country's Environment Protection Agency, has 'hazardous' as the highest level of scale (over 500).

How do international agencies monitor India's AQI?

International agencies such as IQAir have installed sensors at some places across Delhi-NCR.

However, there is no clear information on whether the sensors have been installed at the right place with the standard equipment.

Which monitor's AQI should we follow?

While there is no particular right or wrong monitor, in India, citizens should consider the AQI released by the CPCB - which has 40 stations across Delhi-NCR for assessing pollution.

Delhi's air remains toxic, GRAP 4 imposed

As the air quality in Delhi-NCR entered the 'severe plus' category on Monday, the Delhi government imposed Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), an anti-pollution plan - in addition to the first three stages.

Under this, a ban has been imposed on Delhi-registered BS-IV or older diesel medium and heavy goods vehicles. All trucks and light commercial vehicles registered outside Delhi will not be allowed to enter the national capital, except for those carrying essential commodities or providing essential services.

Additionally, public and private offices have been asked to work at 50 per cent capacity and the rest have been recommended to work from home. All schools have been either closed or gone online.

Opinion: The Pakistan-China Friendship Is Fast Turning Sour

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Are Beijing-Islamabad ties under strain? Last month's bombing near Karachi airport, which killed two Chinese engineers and wounded a third, may well be a turning point. These bombings, claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), were the latest in a string of attacks on Beijing's interests in Pakistan, which began in 2016. They have angered China, which has pushed Pakistan to begin formal negotiations for a joint security management system.

Last Monday, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said that Beijing “will continue supporting Pakistan's counterterrorism effort[s] and socioeconomic development”. Pakistani officials who have direct knowledge of the previously unreported negotiations told Reuters that the Chinese want to bring in their own security, something that Pakistan is not in support of. Beijing has sent Islamabad a written proposal to “allow the dispatch of security agencies and military forces into each other's territory to assist in counterterrorism missions and conduct joint strikes”.

Pakistan, for its part, was amenable to setting up a joint security management system wherein Chinese officials could attend security meetings. It had also requested Beijing for greater help in improving its intelligence capabilities instead of direct involvement. But, it remains averse to having Chinese security and military forces on its territory.

Why China Is Frustrated

China does not seem to be in the mood to be placated—and not without reason. Two major deadly attacks have occurred this year—one was in October last month in Karachi, and another in March in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The latter attack, on a Chinese envoy, was carried out by affiliates of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and resulted in the deaths of five Chinese nationals working on the Dasu dam project.

Following the October bombings, the Chinese response was unusually blunt. It has been pushing for a thorough probe and investigation into the attacks as well as for a large-scale counterterrorism operation. The Chinese embassy, strongly condemning the “terrorist attack”, recently requested Pakistan to “thoroughly investigate the attack, severely punish the perpetrators, and take all necessary measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens, institutions and projects in Pakistan”, and asked “Chinese citizens, enterprises and projects in Pakistan to be vigilant, pay close attention to the security situation, strengthen security measures, and make every effort to take safety precautions”. This is not surprising because these two attacks are certainly not the only ones targeting Chinese interests and personnel in Pakistan.

The Balochistan Conflict

The roots of these tensions go back to Baloch dissatisfaction. However, the other broad underlying factor is Pakistan's inability to assimilate all its ethnic groups and provinces into a cohesive national identity, both culturally and economically. The narrative of Pakistani Balochistan follows a familiar trajectory. It has been seen earlier in the history of East Pakistan (which ultimately decided its destiny as Bangladesh), of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and of the Northwest Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). The steady depletion of natural resources of these provinces, the dispossession of their populaces, the erosion of local autonomy, negligence towards development, the suppression of ethnic identity and culture, demographic changes and the brutal crushing of any dissent or opposition are all-too-familiar patterns.

Balochistan is a resource-rich province with natural gas and mineral deposits, including coal, chromites, barytes, sulphur, marble, iron ore, quartzite, uranium, limestone and 95% of the world's asbestos. Nevertheless, the province continues to languish under neglect, with the Baloch people alleging internal colonisation by Pakistan's dominant Punjab province. The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) continues to press ahead with its demands for secessionism, with Pakistan launching large-scale anti-insurgency operations to crush the agitation. Hundreds of Baloch have lost their lives and many more "disappeared" under these operations.

Why CPEC Has Become A Bone Of Contention

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the flagship programme of China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), passes majorly through Balochistan and is meant to bring in all the fruits of development. But the project has added to Baloch anxiety. The CPEC, a network of road, rail, power grid and cable connections, links China's Xinjiang to the Gwadar Port in Balochistan Province. The Baloch allege dissatisfaction with and exploitation by the CPEC, whereby thousands have been displaced on their own land without adequate compensation or employment opportunities. There are charges of corruption and ambiguity, with many believing that only Pakistani elites and China would benefit from the project. The result has been a string of attacks on Chinese personnel and interests, interrupting the implementation of the CPEC. For instance, in 2018, the BLA attacked the Chinese consulate in Karachi. Two years later, it attacked the Pakistan Stock Exchange, where the Chinese are major investors. In 2022, a female Baloch suicide bomber targeted Karachi University, killing three Chinese teachers. Last year, the BLA set six Chinese mobile towers on fire.

These tensions have considerably slowed down the progress of the CPEC, with many projects having been stalled. The Chinese, who have invested almost $64 billion into the corridor, are visibly upset. In 2021, a Pakistan Senate panel expressed concern over the slow progress of the CPEC and the Chinese dissatisfaction, given that around 135 Chinese companies are engaged in the CPEC. The Chinese Ambassador in Islamabad had also complained that Pakistan had "destroyed CPEC”.

A Breakdown Of Ties?

Along with the stalled projects and lost profits, body bags containing the remains of Chinese workers returning to the country have added to China's frustrations. This has led to pressure on Islamabad to launch a full-blown counterinsurgency operation in Balochistan. It has also contributed to the erosion of confidence and a possible devaluation of bilateral ties with Pakistan. Analysts have pointed out that in the last few joint statements—most notable being the latest one released during the visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to China—Pakistan is no longer mentioned as a “highest priority” country for China, a tag that featured in previous joint statements. Also, the idea of extending the CPEC to Afghanistan—mooted during a trilateral meeting in 2023 between then-Pakistani foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang, and acting Afghan foreign minister Malawi Amir Khan Muttaqi—is no longer being discussed.

Pakistan neither wants to engage in another massive counterterrorism operation nor does it want Chinese security forces to guard CPEC projects. Yet, $30 billion of its $126-billion total external foreign debt is owed to China. It is also seeking another $7 billion from the International Monetary Fund. Not a pretty picture: not for Pakistan, not for China, and certainly not for the CPEC.

Canadian Man Claims Pregnant Indian Women Fly To Canada For Free Births

Chad Eros, a Canadian citizen, recently sparked controversy with a video claiming that many pregnant Indian women are flying to Canada specifically to give birth. Mr Eros alleged that these women are taking advantage of Canada's healthcare system, using it to obtain citizenship for their children, and potentially sponsoring their families to join them in the future. In his post, he shared that a nurse informed his relative that maternity wards are filled with Indian women who had come to Canada to give birth. While Mr Eros acknowledged that Canadian hospitals should provide equal care to all patients, he feels that Indian immigrants are occupying many beds in maternity wards.

He wrote on X, ''The nurse told my niece that the maternity ward is full of Indian women flying to Canada to have their babies, to get a child with Canadian citizenship. Canadian hospitals won't turn anybody away, so they accept all these foreign Indian women, filling up the many wards. Of course, I bet they get a bill for the birth because they don't have Canadian health care, but, how are they going to collect? You see, they fly back to India with their baby after they use our health care system. When their Indian baby grows up they'll come to Canada as a Canadian citizen, sponsor their parents and siblings, and bring the whole family over. And I'm willing to bet it's all free of charge at the Canadian taxpayer's expense.''

See the post here:

The video has garnered mixed reactions, with some supporting his claims and others defending the women and criticising the narrative. Some Canadians offered a differing perspective, emphasising that blame should not be directed at Indians.

''As long as the government allows nothing is illegal. The Government needs to restrict,'' one user said.

Another commented, ''While hearing this looks odd and being an Indian citizen but I somehow agree. This is what the practice is getting followed from last many years and it's not about India I believe most asian countries. Canadian politics take entry here for this baffled system.''

A third wrote, ''Your concern is valid, but this issue stems from gaps in Canada's policies, not any one country. It's a system issue that needs addressing.''

"She Wants To Have Affair...": Kabir Bedi On His Open Marriage To Protima

Kabir Bedi, who has always lived life on his own terms, opened up about his open marriage to Odissi dancer Protima Bedi in a recent interview with Digital Commentary. Kabir and Pratima (died in 1998), were parents to a daughter Pooja and a son Siddharth. During the conversation, Kabir Bedi revealed that he and Pratima wanted to stay together for the sake of their children. At the same time, they chose open marriage as they wanted to have affairs in their respective lives. On being asked about the dynamic he shared with his first wife Protima, Kabir said, "When you think about the past, you tend to have some regrets, everyone feels that and you think about what you could have done differently."

Kabir and Protima Bedi didn't want to conform to the societal norms. Reflecting upon the choices they made, Kabir said, "At that time, we felt that if we want to be together, it is for the kids. And if our inclination is such that she wants to have an affair and I want to also have an affair, the best thing we can do is have an open marriage. You do whatever you want, and I will do what I want. We will stay together and parent our kids together. But ultimately, that didn't work out. And it was a difficult thing to work."

Kabir shared he was always there for his children even after their separation, even though he was working in the US back then. "Even though we separated, we divorced, I fulfilled all my responsibilities. I gave my house to her, and supported her too. We stayed friends all our lives because we had two kids, and we wanted the kids to know that even if the parents can't stay together but they are still our parents," reminisced the actor.

In addition to his work in films like Kurbaan, The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, and Dilwale, Kabir Bedi has also appeared in many international projects, including The Archer: Fugitive from the Empire, La tigre è ancora viva: Sandokan alla riscossa! and The Thief of Baghdad.

In Karnataka Horror, Woman Accused Of Sex Work, Beaten By Neighbours

A woman and a young girl were allegedly assaulted by their neighbours in Karnataka's Belagavi and her clothes were torn on suspicion that they were into prostitution. The incident was reported from Vaddarawadi. According to the police complaint, the girl had been living in the locality for four years.

A family living nearby has alleged that the girl's family indulged in prostitution. The accused had barged inside her residence, dragged her and a young girl outside, and assaulted them.

The attackers claimed that strangers frequented their house, police stated.

The neighbours, while assaulting the two, had torn the clothes of the woman in public and recorded it on mobile phones.

When the woman approached the police station, officials allegedly refused to take her complaint for two days. She then approached the Belagavi Police Commissioner and demanded security citing threat to her life.

Following the instruction from the Police Commissioner, the local police lodged a case against three persons on Friday night. The police have started the investigation and are preparing to question the accused.

A similar incident was reported from Belagavi last December. On December 10, 2023, a 42-year-old woman was dragged outside her home, stripped naked, and paraded. She was then tied to an electric pole and assaulted, reportedly because her son had eloped with a girl from the village.

He Killed Man Over Fight At Meat Shop, Then Calmly Walked Out With His Order

In Uttar Pradesh's Noida, a man's routine trip to buy meat on a quiet Thursday afternoon took a shocking turn as he was stabbed to death outside a shop. Shahzad, a 35-year-old Meerut native living in Noida, and an unidentified customer had arrived at the shop owned by Gulzar. As the two awaited service, a seemingly benign argument over a towel spiralled into a deadly confrontation.

As Shahzad asked the unknown man to lend him a towel he wore, the request provoked the accused, leading to a heated exchange. Eyewitnesses describe how, in the midst of rising tempers, the attacker suddenly seized a butcher's knife lying on the counter, of the Sector 117 meatshop. Without hesitation, he plunged it into Shahzad's stomach, cutting it open which sent Shahzad staggering from the shop.

Holding his bleeding stomach, Shahzad ran approximately 40 metres to a nearby intersection. His desperate plea for help, as he collapsed onto a culvert, went unanswered. The accused continued his pursuit, stabbing Shahzad several more times until he collapsed, dead. The killer, as though unaffected, returned calmly to the meat shop, picked up his order and walked away.

Responding to frantic calls, police officers soon arrived at the scene, retrieved Shahzad's body and sent it for an autopsy. With no initial clues on the killer's identity, three teams were quickly mobilised to scour the area and examine CCTV footage from nearby shops.

Later that night, police received a tip-off about the accused, identified as Amarjeet Mahato, a resident of Bihar. Around dawn today, they traced Mahato to the jungle bordering Sector 117. When police closed in, Mahato fired at the officers with a pistol. In the ensuing exchange of fire, Mahato was shot in the leg, subdued, and taken to a local hospital for treatment. The police also seized the knife used in Shahzad's murder, as well as Mahato's pistol and a stash of live cartridges.

According to the police, Shahzad was the father of three children. His wife Salma works as a cook. Shahzad, who had recently lost his job as a driver, was hoping to secure new work when he was killed.

Though the meat shop was equipped with surveillance cameras, the footage captured only glimpses of the attack: Shahzad is seen fleeing the shop after the initial stab wound, followed by Mahato in quick pursuit. The police have confiscated the CCTV footage from surrounding shops as part of their ongoing investigation.

Gulzar, the meat shop's owner, vanished immediately after the incident.

Shami Sends Big Message To IPL Teams With Stunning Show On Ranji Return

India pacer Mohammed Shami made a memorable return to the Ranji Trophy, claiming four wickets to power Bengal to a first-innings lead over Madhya Pradesh at the Holkar Stadium. On Thursday, the 34-year-old seamer, playing his first Ranji Trophy match since 2018, showed his class and experience, finishing as Bengal's standout bowler with figures of 4-54 in 19 overs. After going wicket-less on the opening day, Shami came back with a vengeance on Day 2. He struck early, dismissing MP captain Shubham Sharma for just eight runs with a trademark delivery that rattled the stumps.

Shami's ability to break partnerships and decimate the lower order was on full display, as he later returned to mop up the tail. In a devastating spell, he bowled Saransh Jain and dismissed Kumar Kartikeya and Khulwant Khejroliya off successive deliveries, leaving the hosts reeling.

The veteran pacer's performance helped Bengal secure a crucial 61-run lead after the first innings, setting the tone for their campaign. Despite not bowling at full pace, Shami troubled the MP batters consistently, including beating the edge of key batter Rajat Patidar multiple times.

He was seen bowling in tandem with his brother, Mohammed Kaif. Shami's appearance in this Ranji Trophy match comes after a five-year gap; his last game for Bengal was a one-off encounter against Kerala in November 2018, just before India's historic 2-1 Test series triumph in Australia. During that Border-Gavaskar series, Shami was a crucial contributor, claiming 16 wickets.

As Shami eyes a return to peak fitness, his strong Ranji showing could pave the way for a recall to India's squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, starting November 22 in Perth.

Musk Hits Out At SNL After Being Mocked, Says Show "Has Been Dying Slowly"

Elon Musk has hit out at a Saturday Night Live (SNL) skit mocking him. The said episode aired on November 9, days after Donald Trump's win in the US presidential election that shocked the world. Both Mr Musk and Mr Trump were lampooned in the episode, with actors sarcastically sharing their support for the president-elect to avoid being put on his "enemies list". Mr Musk's character was portrayed by Dana Carvey, a regular SNL cast member. The episode was hosted by comedian and actor Bill Burr.

During the episode, comedian Kenan Thompson said, "If our planet falls apart, we can all go to Mars with the other man that we love and trust: Elon Musk." At this point, Carvey appears mimicking Mr Musk.

He wore a dark MAGA hat while jumping up and down with his hands in the air.

"Check it out: dark MAGA. Yeah! But seriously, I run the country now. America's going to be like one of my rockets. They're super cool and super fun, but there's a slight chance it could blow up and everybody dies. Haha!" said Carvey.

He also threw his hands in the air and exclaimed, "See you in the White House!"

The billionaire was not impressed by the skit and wrote "Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey," on X, replying under a clip.

Responding to another post, he wrote, "They are so mad that @realDonaldTrump won," and also added a few crying-laughing emojis.

"SNL has been dying slowly for years, as they become increasingly out of touch with reality. Their last-ditch effort to cheat the equal airtime requirements and prop up Kamala before the election only helped sink her campaign further," another of his comments read.

Mr Musk had thrown his weight behind Mr Trump, urging voters to elect the Republican leader. He had even offered cash rewards to people who vote.

According to Bloomberg, Mr Musk's net worth has surpassed $300 billion for the first time in almost three years, as shares of Tesla Inc. soar on bets that his close ties with President-elect Donald Trump will bolster the company.

Tesla's stock has jumped 28per cent since Tuesday's close, increasing his wealth by $50 billion to $313.7 billion.

Dutch Police Use Hologram To Solve 2009 Amsterdam Sex Worker's Murder

The Netherlands Police are using an innovative life-size hologram of a sex worker, killed in Amsterdam in February 2009, to uncover new information about the cold case and bring her killer or killers to justice. The hologram has been placed behind a window in Amsterdam's Red Light district. Sitting on a stool, it looks at people passing by and appears to knock on the window. The glass fogs up, while the word “help” appears on it, CNN reported.

The hologram is modelled on Bernadett Szabó, known as Betty, who was found murdered in the Dutch capital in 2009. Created using 3D visualisation technology, it also features a large dragon tattoo covering Betty's stomach and chest.

A house in the area has been dedicated entirely to Betty's murder, with large stickers on the windows and TV screens showing the crime scene, a documentary and images of the woman.

This holographic has been created to reach out to people, who may have knowledge about the murder case but did not come forward at the time of the incident.

In the official statement, Benjamin van Gogh, coordinator of the Amsterdam Wanted and Missing Persons Team, noted that it was "difficult to determine what it takes to get possible witnesses, in this case, to share their information with us”.

“Betty's hologram may create a certain connection with her and thus convince a person to come forward. In this type of case, we always try to put a face on a victim, so that informants know who they're doing it for, and the hologram is a way of taking this a step further," CNN quoted the official as saying.

In a statement, the Dutch police said that Szabó was born and brought up in poverty in the Hungarian city of Nyíregyháza, before shifting to Amsterdam at the age of 18. After landing in the city, she began earning money as a sex worker in the red light district. After becoming pregnant, she continued to work throughout her pregnancy and later gave birth to a son in November 2008. The child was later placed with a foster family.

Betty was found dead on the night of February 19, 2009, when two of her fellow sex workers reached her workroom on Oudezijds Achterburgwal. They realised they didn't see her or hear the music she usually played. At around 1 AM, they found her body stabbed dozens of times. She was 19, The Guardian reported.

For the past 15 years, police carried out a large-scale investigation into the case, monitoring CCTVs and interviewing witnesses. The case remained unsolved.

The reward for any information related to the case has been hiked to €30,000 (around $32,160).

Do Airport Food Prices Make You Go Hungry? Here's Some Good News

Eating at airports is a costly affair. Food items sold at airport outlets are often overpriced, forcing many passengers to skip meals. But it may soon get easy on the pockets with the authorities planning economy zones that would sell food and beverages at an affordable price, sources said.

Unlike other restaurants in the airport, these zones will not have any seating arrangements. Passengers will have to collect their food from the counters and eat at fast-food tables. There will also be a takeaway facility.

The civil aviation minister reached a consensus to start work on the economy zones after several rounds of meetings. Discussions will now be held with the Airport Authorities of India (AAI), food outlets at airports as well as other agencies to operate such zones, they said.

Sources said such zones will first come up at the newly built airports.

Several passengers had raised concerns over overpriced food items being sold at airport outlets.

Former Union minister P Chidambaram, who was among them, said in an online post in September that a cup of tea - made with just "a tea bag and hot water" - costs Rs 340 at a well-known café that has an outlet in the Kolkata airport. Responding to him, the airport said it had noted the price discrepancy.

'Gambhir To Be Sacked' Report Discarded As "Malicious Intent". However...

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has rubbished the rumours of head coach Gautam Gambhir's ouster if the team fails to put on a show against Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gambhir and the senior players have come under the scanner after India were whitewashed at home by New Zealand, their first Test series loss at home in nearly 12 years. Few days back, a report in Dainik Jagran suggested that Gambhir could be removed from his role in Test cricket if India fail to impress in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting November 22.

The report also added that former India batter and current National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman could be asked to take up the role. However, However, Chopra has discarded the narrative, claiming that it was spread with "malicious intent."

"I feel it is an absolute rumour. This news seems absolutely baseless that if Team India doesn't perform well in Border-Gavaskar Trophy, then change the coach. Have different coaches for different formats. I'd say it's a little too soon. I see this rumour being floated around with malicious intent. Gambhir has just been made the head coach. It does not happen like this that if players are not performing, fire the coach. This is not the way. I do not agree with this thinking at all. I am discarding this kind of report," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

However, Chopra suggested that Gambhir should be held responsible for the loss as the BCCI had accepted all of his demand, including the wish to have his own coaching staff,  before appointing him.

"Whatever Gautam asked for, the BCCI gave him. Publicly, Gautam had said in the past that Team India should have Indian coaches but when he asked for Ryan ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel, the board agreed. When Gautam asked for senior players in Sri Lanka, the board said yes to it. Liberty was given in making pitches as well. When so much happens, then accountability is obvious," he added.

India's tour of Australia will kick off with the 1st Test in Perth, starting from November 22.

Not Allowing Daughter-In-Law To Watch TV Not Cruelty, Court Rules

The Bombay High Court's Aurangabad Bench overturned the conviction of a man and his family over allegations that they did not let his wife watch television, go to the temple, meet neighbours and made her sleep on the carpet.

A single judge bench of Justice Abhay S Waghwase, said the aforementioned actions against the woman, now dead, would not constitute as "severe" under the offence of cruelty under Indian Penal Code Section 498A, LiveLaw reported. The court said that the allegations would not comprise physical and mental cruelty as they pertained to the domestic affairs of the accused.

The court also dismissed the woman's family members' allegation that she was made to fetch water at midnight, after the man's family stated that in their village water supply commenced there at that time and all households went to fetch water at 1.30 am.

The man and his family had earlier been convicted by a trial court on the basis of a case that ill-treatment had pushed the woman to die by suicide on May 1, 2002. "There is a gap of almost two months since deceased, complainant and witnesses met each other. They (mother, uncle and aunt of deceased) have admitted that, there was no communication from deceased either written or oral, she has not conveyed that there was any instances of cruelty in proximity to suicide. There is no evidence to show that at that relevant point or any proximity to the suicide, there was any demand, cruelty or mal-treatment so as to connect them with the suicidal death. What triggered the suicide has remained a mystery," the high court said.

BCCI's Champions Trophy Stance Final, Pakistan Cricket Board Told To...

The Indian cricket team will not travel to Pakistan for next year's ICC Champions Trophy, a tournament which has been revived after a gap of 8 years. According to a report in the Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has communicated their decision to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The BCCI cited security concerns for their decision and expressed their desire to play all their games in Dubai, as per the report. "This has been our stance and there is no reason to change that. We have written to them and asked them to shift our games to Dubai," a BCCI official told the Indian Express on the condition of anonymity.

The last tournament that Pakistan hosted was the Asia Cup in 2023, conducted in a 'Hybrid Model', with the Indian team playing its matches in Sri Lanka, including the final.

However, the latest development comes after India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting at Islamabad.

Recent reports had also claimed that the PCB approached BCCI with the idea of their team returning to India after every game. However, it seems that the BCCI has also rejected this option and are adamant not to travel to Pakistan.

ICC's is unlikely to interfere in India's refusal to travel Pakistan as they can't force any Board to go against its government policy.

According to the tentative schedule proposed by the PCB, the marquee Champions Trophy match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is slated in Lahore on March 1 next year.

The tournament is slated to begin on February 19, 2025, with Pakistan facing New Zealand in Karachi. The final is scheduled on March 9 at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.

According to the tentative schedule, all of India's matches have been kept in Lahore for security and logistical reasons.

The PCB is pushing the ICC to announce the schedule for the tournament by next week as some top officials of the world governing body are due to visit Lahore again next week.

Eknath Shinde's Jibe After Team Thackeray Promises To Scrap Dharavi Project

Former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray's poll promise to scrap the ambitious project to redevelop Dharavi, the biggest slum in Asia, has sparked a strong response from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Releasing his party's manifesto for the Maharashtra election, Mr Thackeray had said yesterday that the Dharavi project will have ramifications on Mumbai and will be scrapped if he is elected to power. Mr Shinde, his former aide who sided with the BJP to topple the earlier Thackeray government, said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) - an alliance of three parties including the Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Shiv Sena (UBT) - knows nothing apart from staying projects.

"Do they know anything except putting a stay on projects and discontinuing them? What else can we expect from MVA? 1-2 lakh people stay in poor conditions in Dharavi, while these leaders stay in big houses," the Chief Minister told reporters.

The MVA is contesting the upcoming Maharashtra polls together to unseat the Mahayuti - an alliance of the BJP and the Shiv Sena faction led by Mr Shinde and the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar.

Asserting that his government has housing for all, Mr Shinde accused the MVA of copying their schemes and challenged them to talk about the work they have done.

"I openly challenge the MVA to talk about the work they have done. They are only copying the schemes we have announced. They are liars and the public will not believe them. The public has decided that the Mahayuti will form the government with a thumping majority," he said.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project - which is set to give the largest slum in Asia spanning over 250 hectares - is a joint venture between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group.

Eligible residents will be given 350-sq-ft flats in the area after the project is completed. Those not eligible will be rehoused elsewhere in the city. Schools, community halls, and hospitals will also be built as part of the redevelopment project.

Opinion: Iran To Trump: When Female Body Becomes A Battleground

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Dissent can take many forms. There are times when a single image can project dissent more powerfully than armed resistance. One such image went viral on social media last week. It was the video of a young woman at Tehran's Islamic Azad University defiantly walking in her underwear. Her long hair is uncovered and she keeps her arms folded in a gesture that is at once steely and protective of her unclothed body.

The woman had been accosted by Iran's morality police for not wearing her hijab properly. According to eyewitness accounts, she was roughed up by them, and, in protest, took off her clothes and walked around in her underwear. Her act — brave, dramatic, and in some ways desperate — was a stark reminder of Iranian women's ongoing struggle against the regressive and repressive dress code imposed on them by the country's hardline theocratic regime, which makes it mandatory for them to cover their heads and wear loose-fitting clothes.

The young woman at Azad University was later surrounded by the police, bundled into a car and taken to an undisclosed location. One Iranian newspaper reported that she had been taken to a psychiatric hospital. The authorities said that she was mentally ill.

'Crazy' Women

“Crazy'' is, of course, a hoary old descriptor that a male-dominated society routinely uses to insult women who are bold, who do not conform to its ideas of how the female sex should behave, and who, above all, seek equal rights with men (Donald Trump, who has just been re-elected as President of the United States, regularly deploys the term against women who stand up to him). So it is no surprise that a regime as misogynistic as the Islamic Republic of Iran would seek to trivialise the young woman's courageous protest by dismissing her as unhinged.

The diktat of compulsory hijab for women came into force in Iran after the revolution of 1979, which put the Islamic clerics in power. Since then, it has been ruthlessly enforced by the country's morality police. Violators can be arrested, beaten, fined, imprisoned or taken to “re-education'' centres where they are sought to be indoctrinated in the virtues of wearing the Islamic headdress.

The Death Of Mahsa Amini

Even so, Iranian women have consistently resisted the autocratic state's loathsome attempt to control their bodies, which really translates into controlling their lives. In 2022 their rage over the draconian dress code and laws that keep them as second-class citizens boiled over when a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, was arrested and assaulted by the morality police for not wearing her hijab in the proper way. Amini died of her injuries three days later.

The outrage over Amini's death sparked massive protests and many women showed their defiance by cutting off their hair and dispensing with their headscarves. Their rallying cry, “Women, Life, Freedom'' rang out, not just across the country, but all over the world. Human rights groups say that more than 500 people were killed and thousands detained by Iran's law enforcement forces during the protests.

The subjugation of women in Iran plays out in other ways, too — by permitting child marriage, by limiting their access to divorce, child custody, and so on.  Iranian women have the lowest employment rate among women in other Islamic countries in the Middle East, barring Afghanistan. According to World Bank data, Iranian women's labour participation rate in 2020 was 19%, compared to, say, 51.8% in Qatar or 30.5% in Oman (as of 2019). You cannot restrict the human rights of one-half of a population and not pay a price in terms of their human development.

Trump's Sinister Return

However, the impulse to control women's bodies and curb their freedom of choice is hardly confined to medievalist theocracies. Women in large swathes of  India see their freedom of choice trampled, be it in their choice of what to wear, how far to study, whom to love or marry, whether to work or where to work. We may not have a band of morality police surveilling and rounding up women who defy the code of modesty, but the fact is that many of our women have little ownership over their own bodies. Their bodies are controlled by social and familial dictates, controlled by the fear of sexual violence, controlled by the fear of being slut-shamed, controlled by fathers who marry them off at will, husbands who decide when they should have a child and how many, or those who feel it is their divine right to beat up their wives.

The sad truth is that even in countries where women had won hard-fought battles to secure equal rights and freedom over their own bodies, there has been a disturbing slideback. In 2022, the conservative majority in the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v Wade judgement of 1973 that gave American women the right to abortion. It was a stunning act of revisionism, a huge blow to women's reproductive rights and an institutionalised move to force women to give up control over their bodies and their lives.

An Age-Old Tale Of Oppression

And now that the US has voted Trump back into power, one can only imagine a further hardening of the conservative agenda. The incoming Trump government is widely expected to either institute a nationwide ban on abortion or further restrict women's access to contraception, reproductive health and, of course, abortion.

When will we see an end to this misogyny? Why is the instinct so deep-rooted in society that each time you feel it has been stamped out and the women set free, it comes right back and thrives anew? Why does the state arrogate to itself the right to determine a woman's decisions — be they reproductive or sartorial?  The only heartening aspect of this millennia-old tale of oppression is that women are never giving up. They will keep fighting. As the young woman in Tehran fought back, standing in her underclothes and turning her body into a searing symbol of resistance against the attempt to control and invisibilise womankind.

"Who Is India's Batting Coach?" For Gambhir, Sharp Criticism From Pakistan

The Indian men's cricket team, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, has come under severe criticism following the Test series whitewash against New Zealand at home. For the first time ever, India lost a series at home with a scoreline 3-0, comprising of as many games. Amid the ongoing debate surrounding the spin-friendly tracks, former Pakistan player Basit Ali questioned the role of Gambhir and his coaching staff. He highlighted India's batting failures, particularly against spin, and criticised the batting coach for not doing his job.

"India ka batting coach hai kaun, jo yeh nahi bata pa raha ki Test cricket session to session hoti hai? Bas har over 12 run bana lo, 10 run bana lo. Yeh koi cricket hai yaar! (who is India's batting coach, not able to advise the batsmen that you approach Tests session by session. Trying to score 10-12 runs every over is not cricket)," Basit said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Gambhir's coaching staff comprises of Abhishek Nayar and Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate. However, there is no clarity as to who performs the role of the batting coach.

Basit also slammed India's batting coach, if there's any, for not having proper dialogue with young players, especially the likes of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

"Is there no one to tell players like Jaiswal and Gill that when you reach 30-35, then don't get out playing loose shots, try to play out the session? Because only a set batsman can be successful (on such tracks), at that time he is your Bradman. But it seems they wait and think that there is still Virat Kohli to come, Rishabh Pant too, also KL Rahul and Sarfaraz; but on these tracks, the one who is set is the big player," he added.

New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel ran through the Indian line-up. While Santner took a match-haul of 13 wickets in the Pune Test, Patel bagged 11 in Mumbai.
