We prefer facemasks over sheets, but SUGAR's latest variants with ingredients such as green tea, rose water and aloe vera, are too tempting to decline. Try the cheat sheet clarifying mask, which promises to control oil and blemishes and unclog pores. It's not cumbersome, even for a first-timer; we almost applied it on the wrong side. It takes longer to dry (30 minutes) but the eyeholes are a bonus. These aren't too large, a problem that makes our dark circles more prominent.

Shah Rukh Khan, the knight in shining sherwani

Leading publicist Archana Sadanand escaped a freak fire accident during a Diwali party at Amitabh Bachchan's Juhu home Jalsa thanks to Shah Rukh Khan's presence of mind.

Sadanand, who has represented Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for over a decade, sustained burn injuries to her hands and right leg after her lehenga came in contact with a diya. She is recuperating at Nanavati Hospital.

Sources in Nanavati Hospital told mid-day that Sadanand, who was admitted in the wee hours of Monday, is kept in isolation in the ICU to prevent infections. Doctors said she sustained 15 per cent burns. Khan also suffered minor burns.

JalsaJalsa's entrance lit up with kandeels for the party

The Bachchan Diwali party is among the most coveted in town and had Bollywood A-listers and the Ambanis in attendance. The accident happened very late, when there were few guests around, said sources.

"It was just after 3 am and a few guests were still around," an insider told mid-day.

JalsaAbhishek Bachchan at the party

"Archana was with her daughter in the courtyard when her lehenga caught fire. Those around were stunned and didn't know what to do. Shah Rukh had the presence of mind, rushed to Archana, and put out the fire. He, too, sustained minor burns while dousing the flames with a jacket. His only thought was to put out the fire."

Hospital sources said Sadanand is under the care of Dr Devyani B Venkat, a plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgeon, who recently joined Nanavati after returning from the US. Dr Venkat is the daughter of renowned gastroenterologist Jayant Barve, who treats Bachchan Sr.

Sources said Sadanand is almost like family for the Bachchans.

When mid-day contacted her, Dr Venkat refused to comment. mid-day's attempts to contact the Bachchans and Khan were also unsuccessful till press time.

Hospital sources, however, said Sadanand was recovering well and was even made to walk for a few minutes inside the isolated ICU on Tuesday. She is not allowed visitors as of now.

Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Manoj Kumar Sharma told mid-day, "We have been intimated by Nanavati Hospital about the admission of the patient. The local police recorded her statement, where she confirmed it was an unfortunate accident."

Ice dream

Food: Interesting
Ambiance: Attractive
Service: Sincere
Cost: Moderate
Verdict: 1/5

Given our predilection — bordering on obsession — for all things ice cream-y and that too in one of our favourite iterations of the treat, soft serve, we couldn't wait to give this new store-in-store creamery a whirl…or should we say, "swirl"?

Offering a range of both innovative signature swirl sundaes and the usual build-your-own kind of soft serves, Xoco 57, the candy pink and white-hued kiosk nestled in the heart of the Pedder Road branch of a grocery-store chain, is an interesting place to find oneself in on a sweltering October afternoon. Sharing its space with a chocolate counter to its right and a mithai one to its left, we weren't surprised to see it enjoy the most action, with hordes of teenagers and kids accompanied by their parents making a beeline for it.

French crisp
French crisp

Feeling particularly indulgent that afternoon, we ordered for a range of their sundaes that we could see being assembled in front of us, built from an assortment of toppings, sauces and sprinkles.

With a levered machine dispensing only vanilla, chocolate and vanilla-chocolate combination softy bases, we did wish that there were a few more base options available. A tart berry or zesty citrus one would have hit the spot. But alas, we had to make do with the various concoctions featuring the good old vanilla-chocolate duo.

Vanilla soft serve
Vanilla soft serve

The peanut punch ('195) with its creamy chocolate soft serve base is a confection that is sure to win the heart of a peanut fan for its generous sprinkling of slightly salted, crushed peanuts that are covered in a drizzle of warm chocolate sauce.

Adding further nutty heft is a mighty splodge of peanut butter that seals the deal perfectly. Topped with French crêpe crisps and the same chocolate sauce, the French crisp ('195) won us over with its vanilla soft serve that had actual flecks of vanilla beans peeking out through the ice cream.

Signature soft serve cup. Pics/Ashish Raje
Signature soft serve cup. Pics/Ashish Raje

Blending the words "adulting" and ice cream expertly was the strongly flavoured Xoco 57 signature soft serve ('225), with its spicy pink peppercorn and dark chocolate bark toppings melded with a vanilla-chocolate base.

For our final signature swirl, we tucked into one that reflected the latest international trend of "birthday cake" flavoured confections. Simply called birthday cake ('250), it turned out to be the unanimous favourite among the three of us ice cream f(r)iends! Fudgy chocolate brownie morsels, a spoonful of Nutella and a shower of rainbow-hued sprinkles sitting atop a vanilla-chocolate base made this one a treat we'll be back for.

Xoco

Attempting to satiate our desire for something tart and fruity was the vanilla soft serve cone ('95) — we had the option of upgrading to a waffle cone for '125 — topped with a raspberry coulis ('25 extra).

Though not bad at all, it sadly tasted like any ordinary grocery store-bought raspberry syrup and not like a coulis actually made with the berry. While we'd sure love to see a few more base flavours and fruit-based toppings added as part of their offerings, this creamery seems to get it right for the most part.

Soft serve or gelato?

Ice cream is served at -12 degrees celsius while a soft serve at -6 degrees celsius. This, and the fact that soft serve contains less milk fat and more air, makes it creamier. But while a soft serve is made by incorporating air into the ice cream during the freezing process, Gelato has a higher proportion of milk and a lower proportion of cream and eggs (or no eggs at all).

4/5 Exceptional, 3/5 Excellent, 2/5 very Good, 1/5 Good, 0.5/5 Average. Xoco 57 didn't know we were there. The Guide reviews anonymously and pays for meals

In 2004, Shabnam Ramaswamy started Katna's Kantha in West Bengal's Katna village with twelve women. A livelihood generation programme under the NGO Street Survivors India, the project stands strong with a network of 1,500 women today. And the products they create are born out of a skill unique to their community. The kantha or quilting stitch is a counted thread-stitch featuring intricate geometric patterns that bind together layers of recycled saris. The women incorporate over 150 geometric motifs which are passed on from one generation to the next.

Guide

This week, their collection comprising kanthas or coverlets; sarees, dupattas and stoles available in silk and cotton will be displayed and available for purchase at a Kala Ghoda gallery. Sanjay Raut warns ally BJP: Don't compel us to look for alternative

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Monday upped the ante against ally BJP, saying his party should not be compelled to look for an alternative to form the next government in Maharashtra and asserted there are "no saints in politics". The BJP and the Sena, with 105 and 56 seats, respectively, in the new Assembly, are locked in a bitter tussle over sharing of power.

Ever since the results were announced on October 24, there have been statements from sections in the Congress-NCP, though not officially, hinting that a move by the Sena to look beyond the BJP for government formation may get positive feelers. Speaking to a news channel, Raut said, "We believe in the alliance (with BJP) as we contested the polls jointly. But the BJP should not compel us to commit the sin of looking for an alternative for government formation." "No one is a saint in politics," he added, possibly a hint to the senior ally that committing such a "sin" was not entirely unfathomable for the Sena. Raut claimed the two parties had agreed on an "equal power" sharing formula and had even made an announcement on it in Mumbai. "Ahead of the Assembly polls, the BJP requested Sena for more share of seats because of large number of turncoats.

"Sena chief (Uddhav) Thackeray agreed to it, hence they contested on 164 seats and the Sena on 124," Raut explained, adding, "We never lie in politics, even if it is for gaining power". Queried on a scenario where the BJP goes ahead alone and stakes claim to form the government, he said, "The BJP is the single largest party at present in the state. If they can provide a majority government without the Sena's help, I welcome it." Hardening stand on equal division of the chief ministerial tenure, Raut said, "We will see how they do not share the post of chief minister. Both the parties agreed on 50:50 power-sharing formula. There is no need to explain it in detail." Raut claimed there has been no discussion so far between the BJP and Sena on government formation. Raut is the chief whip of the party in Parliament and executive editor of Sena mouthpiece Saamana.

Palghar: Women cheated of Rs 41.40 lakh; one booked

Palghar: A man has been booked for allegedly cheating more than 100 women to the tune of Rs 41.40 lakh by promising them higher returns and facilitating their participation in programmes of "big industrialists" here in Maharashtra, police said on Monday. An offence under IPC section 420 (cheating) has been registered against the accused, Mukram Ali Mohammad Ansari, who has not been arrested yet, senior inspector Vasant Labdhe of the Nallasopara police station said.

As many as 104 women, all residents of Nallasopara in Palghar district, were cheated by the accused, he said. According to the complaint lodged by victims, Ansari made women to pay Rs 35,000 each for registering themselves for participating in programmes of "big industrialists" in adjoining Mumbai, he said.

The accused also told them they would get Rs 15 lakh in return and issued them fake DDs for the sum, the senior inspector said. In addition, he took Rs 5 lakh from most of the victims for entering into MoUs for encashing the DDs, Labdhe said. However, Ansari neither returned the original sum taken from each of them nor the higher amount promised by him, prompting the women to file the complaint, he said.

The entire episode took place between December 2017 and February 2019 and the swindled amount stood at Rs Rs 41.40 lakh, the police officer said. According to the police, one more complaint has been registered against the same accused with the Tulinj police station in Palghar district. In the second complaint, Ansari has been accused of cheating around 40 women in the same fashion, but the amount involved was still being ascertained, the police added.

War Trailer

Thugs Of Hindostan has over 108 million views, Baahubali: The Conclusion rests on 109 million views and Zero enjoys the maximum views - 120 million.

Talking about the success of War, Roshan recently said, "I'm delighted that our labour of love, blood and sweat has created so many milestones during the course of its run at the box office. It is absolutely sensational that 'War' has entered the Rs 300 crore club but what's truly phenomenal is that this film has redefined action films and action genre forever in India.”

On the work front, Yash Raj Films is planning to turn War into a franchise, with Roshan being the lead in all of them. The actor is now gearing up for the Satte Pe Satta remake with Farah Khan, co-starring Anushka Sharma. And then, he'll give his fans the next film in his superhero franchise, Krrish; yes, we are talking about Krrish 4. Rakesh Roshan is slowly recovering after being unwell for a long time and is all geared up to direct his most ambitious film to date.

There were rumours that the fourth film of the franchise will be directed by Sanjay Gupta and not Rakesh Roshan. However, the filmmaker refuted all such news and clarified that he is very much helming the sci-fi adventure.

Shroff, on the other hand, will be seen in Baaghi 3 and the Rambo Remake, also directed by Siddharth Anand. Baaghi 3 opens in cinemas on March 6, 2020, and Rambo on October 2.
