Since then, her Twitter handle (@MadhuraKarekar) has been flooded with pictures sent by residents, directing her attention to various civic issues, including potholes, water leakages and littering, among others.
She doesn't shirk any request, solving most cases within 24 hours flat. Impressed with her work, the Mumbai North Central District Forum (MNCDF) will be awarding her a certificate for bridging the trust deficit between citizens and the municipality.
Karekar was first appointed the complaint officer of the ward in May 2016. She, however, didn't take to social media until December last year. The BSc graduate shares, "I asked my 15-year-old daughter to teach me how to create a Twitter account, but she did not want to go through the pain of explaining all the details to her non-millennial mother. So, I sought the help from our junior engineer. The aim was to immediately address grievances, that are otherwise reported on phone calls, which generally take a longer time to be resolved."
The 48-year-old officer is often seen attending multiple phone calls of citizens, while also browsing on her Twitter account from inside her office, located on Saint Martin's Road in Bandra West. Most grievances, she says, are regarding solid waste management (SWM) from areas under the H/West ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which include Bandra West, Khar West and Santacruz West. Every issue that is tweeted to her, immediately goes to the head of departments concerned. Speedy redressal is always guaranteed.
When Karekar took charge in 2016, about 50 complaints were pending with the ward office. Today, she says, the number of complaints reported every day via phone calls has reduced to two. "On Twitter, we get about 20 complaints, of which most are solved within 24 hours. If some issues overshoot the deadline, I put out a 'work-in-progress' post," she adds.
Her efforts were recently recognised by MNCDF. Advocate Trivankumar Karnani, founder of the fourm that takes up civic issues to elected representatives, says, "We have started an initiative of handing out certificates to government officers who help solve people's problems. Of the total 24 complaint officers across the city, Karekar is the only one who uses Twitter to cater to important issues. Earlier, I would have to call the ward's assistant commissioner with a complaint, which would then go down the hierarchy. This would delay the whole process. Quite recently, we started corresponding with Karekar through WhatsApp. But her signing up on Twitter seemed a better option."
Talking about a recent incident involving a bike accident on Dr Ambedkar Road in Khar West, Karnani says, "Earlier this week, a bike met with a minor crash due to a pothole. I reported this to Karekar. To my surprise, I saw the maintenance team at the site the next day." Karekar feels she is only doing her job diligently. "My role, honestly, is only of a postman's. But I recommend all officers use social media."

Sanghamitra Chatterjee
We have this thing with floors
Colaba space Chatterjee & Lal, along with the iconic Mumbai tile manufacturer Bharat Tiles, is getting ready to host Paving the Way, an exhibition to showcase the role tiles played while designing a space. "The past few years have been witness to a plethora of conversations and exhibitions around the architectural diversity of Mumbai," says Sanghamitra Chatterjee, founder of Past Perfect Heritage Management and curator of the show. "This narrative, unfortunately, is incomplete and excludes another, less-documented area: the interiors of the city's iconic buildings, which were as stylised as the exterior. Flooring and tiles, whether industrial or hand-crafted, have added to the character, heritage and utility of the structures they were laid down for. Curated from archival material from Bharat Tiles, this exhibition sparks a discussion around the floors we walk on every single day, and expose audiences to the nuances of the tiling industry."

Making malls inclusive
To mark International Transgender Day of Visibility, which falls today, Sharanya Ruia, daughter of Atul Ruia, MD, The Phoenix Mills Limited, will organise sensitisation workshops at retail and corporate establishments. The 16-year-old will begin by training the staff and security personnel across the malls the family runs. "Last year, while I was at a mall in Pune, I noticed that a transgender person was not able to gain entry as neither the male nor female security guards were willing to engage with them. I realised that there was no right or wrong here, but a great lack of awareness. My initiative is to sensitise as many people as possible to the social stigma that the community faces," she told this diarist. Ruia plans to use audio-visual aides, Q&As and even first-hand experiences of volunteers from the community to make the 70-minute-long workshop immersive and authentic.

Hanumant Singh featured in an Esso card
Remembering Hanumant and Esso
It was Hanumant Singh's birth anniversary earlier this week. He would have celebrated his 80th birthday on Friday and our in-house cricket nut decided to mark the occasion by pulling out a souvenir card featuring the former India cricketer (who passed away in 2006) which was lapped up by fans on social media. Cards featuring individual India and England players of the 1963-64 series in India were published by Esso, the petroleum giants in the 1960s. Each time a cricket enthusiast filled petrol, he would avail of cards. A completed Esso album (Rs 3) would then be checked by an officer at the service station and endorsed with a rubber stamp. Apart from being a proud owner of a near complete album (Vijay Mehra card is proving elusive), our cricket nut rejoices in the fact that the BCCI, under the leadership of Fatehsinhrao Gaekwad, endorsed this and encouraged this activity in his introduction to the album. That's how BCCI chiefs should recognise that fans can play a key role in popularising the game, he reckons. Meanwhile, Esso cards have attracted a good amount of interest and demand among collectors the world over. But this album is not going anywhere.

It's show time for this opera
Author Shreya Sen-Handley is just one step away from making a splash in the UK's operatic scene. Handley who will be releasing her new collection of short stories, Strange, with HarperCollins India this year, has also just finished writing an opera for the Welsh National Opera, which is known to be one of the biggest theatrical organisations in the world and headed by Prince Charles. Confirming the development, Handley told this diarist, "Not long after my first book, Memoirs of My Body, was published [in 2017], I was approached, completely out of the blue, by the Welsh National Opera. I was utterly taken aback to find they wanted me to write a libretto for them. Not only have very few Indian/Asian writers had such an opportunity; not coming from an operatic/theatrical background myself, it was not something I ever expected. Plus, an opera is essentially an epic poem and I don't write poetry. But they reassured me that I had been highly recommended, and that, on reading my writing, they thought it a perfect fit. The rest, as they say, is history." The opera, we are told, will be performed at some of the biggest theatres across the UK next year.

Demarginalising Indian Muslims
Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Abdur Rahman launched his second book, Denial and Deprivation: Indian Muslims after the Sachar Committee and Rangnath Mishra Commission Report, in the city on Friday. When our diarist asked him why he chose this subject for his book, the 46-year-old officer said, "Indian Muslims, comprising 15 per cent of the country's total population, are educationally, socially and economically backwards. They are not in the mainstream anymore. And somewhere, this is causing a problem, not just to them, but the entire country. If India wants to become a superpower, every individual needs to be empowered. The aim is to convey this message to Indians and governing authorities through my book."

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly duping electrical equipment distributors to the tune of several lakh rupees, Thane police said Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police 9Crime) Deepak Deoraj told reporters Puranchand Jain (50) and Bhumaram Kumhar (45) would get phone numbers of distributors from trade and industrial directories and then proceed to cheat them by placing fraudulent orders for electrical items.
"They would ask the distributor to supply equipment to a particular shop. They would tell the shop owner to keep the goods for sometime. The duo would call the distributor for payment at a particular place but would vanish after taking delivery of the items from the shop. They used new mobile numbers for all such transactions," Deoraj said.
Police got on their trail after a complaint was lodged by a distributor, duped of LED bulbs worth Rs 55,000, in August last year. Police said Jain and Kumhar are believed to have at least a dozen such cases against their names in Thane and suburbs like Andheri, Borivali and Dahisar in neighbouring Mumbai. They were arrested on March 26 and remanded in police custody till April 2, the DCP said.

Around 10 days after the villagers from Kaman near Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS) in Vasai allegedly vandalised the forest department office and assaulted the forest guard for taking action against five accused for trespassing into the forest with an intention to hunt, the police authorities are yet to make any arrest, despite strong video evidence.
The forest guards met SGNP director and requested him to look into the case. The video, which mid-day possesses, shows about 50 hooligans, including women, vandalising the government property.
A forest guard, who did not wish to be named, said, "The morale of the forest guards is low because, despite providing evidence such as video and pictures of the incident, there has been no arrest. If action is not taken, then a negative message will go out and people will not fear the law. Some villagers from TWS area have even started fires in the forest. We have brought all these issues to the notice of our CCF and SGNP director and we are hoping that strict action will be taken. If the same is not done, we will intensify our protests."
A senior officer from SGNP, who did not wish to be named, said, "We have handed over the evidence to the police officials and already an FIR is in place." Palghar SP, Gaurav Singh said, "Our team is investigating the case, there are several people involved in the attack and it is very serious. We have to check everyone's role and then arrest them. Therefore, we are taking time."

In your teens, only a few things matter. And, if heritage and the arts are among them, it's probably skill-sets worth honing. Back in 2014, when Joynel Fernandes, then all of 19, pursued a summer internship at the Archdiocesan Heritage Museum in Goregaon - the country's third museum on Christian religious art - its director, Fr Warner D'Souza, did exactly that.
Today, 25-year-old Fernandes, armed with a diploma in museology and conservation from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), is not just the assistant director of the museum, but also the author of two books, one of which was published earlier this month and where she critically explores classical Christian artworks that depict the Passion of Christ.

Fernandes is not alone. Giving her company is 20-year-old Wilson Pinto. Together, the duo has been holding fort at the museum, assisting in the preventive conservation of several Christian artefacts, including sculptures, vestments and rare manuscripts from the city and outside - some of which date back to the early 1500s - while also conducting guided tours for visitors.
Both Joynel Fernandes and Wilson Pinto's interest in the project grew after brief stints at the museum. Fernandes's first project with the museum was the exhibition organised in 2014 at Bandra commemorating the Golden Jubilee of the 38th International Eucharistic Congress (an international gathering of clergy and laity) held in 1964. "At the time, I was in my final year BA at St Xavier's College, Dhobi Talao," she recalls. "But the project seemed so fascinating, that I signed up for it. As part of our research, we read several books and studied various artefacts. That whole period spent in exploring the history that you don't otherwise encounter in stereotypical syllabus or in the mainstream narratives drew me in." She later joined the museum full time.
Pinto, a Commerce student, got involved after Fr D'Souza, who is also his parish priest at the Church of St Jude in Malad East, asked him to help him at the museum, two summers ago. The association has continued ever since with Pinto aspiring to study archaeology.
One of the major projects that Fernandes and Pinto were initially involved in, was around two years ago, when they, along with nine other college interns, took on the Herculean task of cataloguing, documenting and interleaving the museum's vast paper collection comprising photographs, letters, brochures, old editions of Catholic magazines, prayer books and Bibles, one of which was the first English edition.
After being trained under Fr Warner for a week, the team started with first cleaning the inner-corners of the books with a soft brush and then interleaving the pages with glassine (acid-free) paper. "If there were any signs of active infestation or damage, they were treated or restored accordingly by professionals," says Fernandes. Fr Warner also put them through the rigour of watching online tutorials by the Australian Museum, Smithsonian Institution and others, to understand how to store paper artefacts. Last year, they undertook a similar task for fabric, metal and wooden objects.
Apart from this, the two also manage the museum. "Preventive conservation involves measures to avoid and minimise the damage of artefacts through appropriate museum upkeep. We have to constantly keep a check on the temperature of the premises, especially during the monsoons as moisture easily attracts fungi. Also, on a daily basis, before we open [at 9 am], we investigate every artefact," says Fernandes. Then, there is a large volume of visitors they have to attend to. "We split the guided tours, between ourselves," says Pinto.
Starting young
Fr Warner D'Souza, who has played an instrumental role in engaging the youth at the museum, says, "The youth has the credentials and are able to speak, understand and comprehend far better than we give them credit. Also, if you really want to convince young people that art and culture is interesting, you need to have somebody out there, who speaks their language."

The Congress ended its search for a Lok Sabha candidate for Pune on Saturday by inducting the chief of Maratha organisation Sambhaji Brigade, Pravin Gaikwad. The party also announced candidate for Raver in north Maharashtra which the NCP has given up ahead of nomination process. His candidature was to be announced late Saturday evening.
Maratha votebank
Gaikwad's entry into electoral politics is expected to create a social engineering in Pune where the BJP has wiped out the Congress and NCP in the polls that were held since 2014. Gaikwad's dominance in Maratha community, his anti-BJP/RSS thought and acceptance in other communities is expected to help his prospects against BJP's Brahmin candidate Girish Bapat, who unceremoniously replaced a Maratha, the BJP's sitting MP Anil Shirole. The battle will be labelled as Maratha versus Brahmin. In 2014, it was Maratha versus Maratha (Vishwajit Kadam of Congress).
A fiery orator who has won over people with his speeches, he is also an author/historian. Having interpreted the Maratha history by dismissing popular assumptions that the Maratha and other backward classes say were created with a purpose of putting a particular upper caste on the high pedestal of caste system, Gaikwad is all set to make the contest more interesting.
Vishal Patil for Sangli
As the Congress did not get Sangli back in its kitty from Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtna and failed in checking a possibility of rebellion in its rank, Raju Shetti's farmers party (Swabhimani) has roped in Vishal Patil, a grandson of late Vasantdada Patil, former Congress CM, as its candidate. Shetti expects the move to motivate the Congress workers for supporting Vishal.
In Raver, where NCP could not find a suitable candidate to challenge BJP's Raksha Khadse, who is Eknath Khadse's daughter-in-law, the Congress has been asked to contest there. The Congress has fielded a veteran leader, Dr Ulhas Patil.

The students' association of Grant Medical College has filed a petition with the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) and the education minister, against Dr Ajay Chandanwale, who was appointed dean in December last year. They have said that acts of enforcing a dress code and moral policing is leading to mental trauma.
In a series of stories, mid-day highlighted the plight of medical students at the state's biggest government-run medical institute Grant Medical College, which is attached to the JJ Hospital. The issue came into light when the dean issued instructions during the annual college festival, dictating that female students could not wear shorts or short dresses. Female students were also instructed to dance and sit separately from male students.
Following months of discrimination and harassment, the students' association has filed a petition to DMER and the education minister, Girish Mahajan. The letter states, "Moral policing in the campus has been carried out regularly by the orders of dean, where boys and girls aren't allowed to talk to each other in college campus after college hours. Dress code and unreasonable timings for girls' hostel during the annual college fest, Asthiva. Girls were screened on the basis of their outfits by faculty member sent by dean's order including ladies hostel warden Dr Shilpa Patil [sic]."
The institute decided that female students could gain entry into their hostels only before 10 pm. The authorities even created an in-house library so women didn't have to step out of the hostel for studies, whereas male students are allowed to roam without any restrictions.
In the petition, the students have also complained that female students are often subjected to verbal abuse, especially those who have protested against the dean. "Protesting students have also been threatened of academic consequences by the college authority... The lady warden Dr Shilpa Patil abuses ladies representative every now and then. This has been a mental torture and representatives are traumatised [sic]," adds the letter. Dr TP Lahane, the director of DMER and former dean of the hospital, said he would look into the matter.

Party leaders from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Saturday were openly seen campaigning for Congress' Eknath Gaikwad at Shivaji Park in Dadar. Sources said that the diktat has come from MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who has been vehemently critical of the BJP and PM Narendra Modi.
Since the party has decided against contesting the Lok Sabha elections this year, MNS area presidents and local leaders have been asked to go out and support NCP and the Congress, sources said.
In the past, the MNS has enjoyed strong support in Dadar. During the 2014 elections, the MNS had given a tough fight to current Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale, and were also leading for a while. On Saturday, party leaders such as Sandeep Deshpande were seen accompanying Gaikwad, who is the Congress candidate from the South Central constituency.

Gaikwad had kick-started his campaign interacting with morning walkers and joggers at Shivaji Park. Sources close to Gaikwad said, "It is usually not possible to speak with citizens when the campaigning and rallies begin. We thought it would be nice to go on ground, and tell them about our plans while listening to their concerns."
Several MNS workers were also present. Speaking to mid-day, a source form MNS said, "As we have decided not to contest the Lok Sabha polls for now, we do not want this government to repeat term. And so, we will go out and help every candidate across the state, who is contesting against the Modi-led government. Our support in Dadar area will definitely make the difference for Congress.
MNS workers are also working for Sanjay Dina Patil, who is the NCP candidate from the North constituency." When contacted, Deshpande denied campaigning for the Congress. "I go for morning walks at Shivaji Park. When I happened to Gaikwadji on Saturday, I just gave him my good wishes. We didn't campaign for him."

A neighbourhood in Bhayander West was on the edge on Saturday morning, when a 45-year-old man with blood-stained hands was found yelling from inside the window of his house, claiming that he had killed his mother. Locals alerted the police who immediately rushed to the spot, only to find a senior citizen lying dead on the floor.
The man, identified as Sonath Mitra, has now been arrested for allegedly killing his 85-year-old mother, Rama. The incident took place in Pratiksha Building near Madvi Lake in Bhayander West.

According to the police, the Mitras originally hail from West Bengal, and were living on rent in the building for the last one and a half years. Sonath used to work on a tourism bus, but lost the job as he was mentally unwell. Since then, a Catholic NGO had been paying for the house rent and making food arrangements for the mother and son.

During investigation, Sonath told the police that his mother and he would quarrel over minor issues. On Saturday morning, the police said, they had another argument. While they were fighting, he claimed his mother hit him. Furious, he assaulted her back, and she fell on the floor and injured her head. However, he panicked when he saw blood spurting out from her head. He then rushed out to the window, after which the police arrived.
"When we reached the spot, we saw Rama lying on the floor, and Sonath standing beside her limp body. She had suffered a grievous head injury. We rushed her to a local government hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival," said Senior Inspector CM Jadhav from Bhayander police station. The accused is in police custody. He has been booked and arrested under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder, said Jadhav.

Environmental activists formed a human chain at Marine Drive in south Mumbai Saturday to protest tree-cutting in the city for the ongoing Metro rail construction. They also demanded that political parties include environmental issues in their manifestos for the Lok Sabha elections.
"This chain is the city's way of declaring that its citizens will not vote for any party that does not address environmental concerns in its manifesto for Lok Sabha elections," said Amrita Bhattacharjee, a senior member of the Arey Conservation Group (ACG).
Wildlife conservation activists, students and representatives of those displaced because of various development projects were among those who took part in the chain which extended for almost a kilometre.
"We want to save the only green lungs of the city," Bhattacharjee said, referring to Arey Colony in north Mumbai. "And why only Mumbai city, environment-related issues in the entire country should be addressed with a top priority," Bhattacharjee said.
The ACG is agitating to protect the green cover in Arey Colony, where around 2,700 trees are to be cut to make way for a car-shed for Metro. Trees are being chopped down arbitrarily for the Metro and activists are not allowed to be present when trees are cut, Bhattacharjee said, Advocate Abhishek Bhatt, another activist, said, "Measures for protection of ecology do not feature in any political agenda across the country."
Tribals and Kolis (fishermen), original inhabitants of Mumbai, were being driven out from their lands for so-called development, the activists said in a statement.

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on Saturday called on NCP chief Sharad Pawar at his residence 'Silver Oak'. NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said it was a "courtesy call" and the two did not discuss politics during the meeting that lasted for around half an hour.
A party source said Pawar had backed Tendulkar recently when he was trolled by BJP supporters for stating, after the Pulwama attack, that India should play Pakistan in the World Cup, and "today's meeting was just a courtesy call against that backdrop."
Amid demand that India should not play Pakistan even during the coming World Cup after the Pulwama incident, Tendulkar had said he would hate to gift two points to Pakistan by not playing.
As he came under fire, Pawar defended Tendulkar, a former Rajya Sabha member, saying those attacking the master batsman should keep it in mind that he started his career by beating Pakistan.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Saturday campaigned for Congress' Ekanath Gaiwad, who is contesting from the Mumbai South Central Lok Sabha seat.
Many prominent leaders of MNS such as Sandip Deshpande, participated in the campaign at Shivaji Park and urged the people to cast their vote in favour of Gaiwad.
MNS members joined the electioneering by the Congress candidate after their party chief Raj Thackeray, at a public rally in Mumbai last week, said that MNS would not contest the Lok Sabha polls but would support parties which are willing to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Mumbai South Central seat has been Shiv Sena's stronghold with the party having captured it from 1991 to 2004. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, Congress had won from the constituency, but in 2014 Shiv Sena secured it.
Maharashtra, which has 48 Lok Sabha seats, will vote in four phases of the seven-stage general election on April 11,18, 23 and 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.

The Election Commission (EC) has launched an inquiry against Prithviraj Deshmukh, Sangli district unit president of the BJP, for allegedly violating the model code of conduct, an official said on Saturday.
Deshmukh, while addressing a joint gathering of BJP, Shiv Sena and RPI (A) workers at Miraj city in Sangli district on Wednesday, reportedly told a party worker that he would get Rs five lakh or more if BJP MP Sanjaykaka Patil is re-elected to the Lok Sabha.
A video clip of his address has gone viral on social media. During his address, Deshmukh said it was not easy to win the Sangli Lok Sabha seat currently held by Patil. When someone from the crowd asked Deshmukh what would he give them if they got Patil re-elected, he said, "You will get five lakh or even more."
But he added, "Jokes apart, Sanjaykaka Patil has done a good job here in Miraj by getting funds for development of roads, highways, railways and other infrastructure projects."
Talking to PTI, Sangli District Collector Abhijit Chaudhari said the EC has taken cognisance of the media reports of Deshmukh's speech. "The footage of his speech has been sent to the assistant returning officer, who is now studying it. Further course of action will be initiated once the inquiry is
complete," he said.
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, no further inquiry was required as Deshmukh's speech had already gone viral on social media, in which he is clearly heard offering bribe to people. "What more proof is required to take action? This is a clear violation of the model code of conduct. This proves our stand that the BJP is fighting elections based on money power," Malik said.
